PsV 2000 Main Battle Tank
Following the cancellation of Sweden’s Strv 2000 program, Finland revived many of its concepts under the designation Panssarivaunu 2000 (PsV 2000). Conceived as a domestic main battle tank for the Finnish Defence Forces, the PsV 2000 retained hallmark features of its Swedish predecessor: a three-man crew, a 140 mm high-velocity main gun, and a coaxial 40 mm autocannon, providing overwhelming firepower against heavily armored and lightly protected targets alike.
Development was led by Patria, with key contributions from Valmet Automotive (hull fabrication and modular armor), Insta Group (fire control and electronics), Millog Oy (systems integration), and Sako (weapons support). Tailored to Finnish needs, the PsV 2000 emphasized cold-weather operability, simplified maintenance, and mobility in Northern terrain. Though never fielded in numbers, it remains a striking “what-if” in Finnish armored history.

One of its most distinctive traits was the exceptional gun depression made possible by the forward-mounted trunnions and counterbalanced gun cradle. This gave the PsV 2000 a major tactical edge in Southern Finland’s hilly and forested terrain, where hull-down positions and steep angles of fire are crucial for ambush and defense.
This Ford Transit was a one-off purchase by Grampian Regional Council in 1976. Allocated fleet number 85, it remained in the fleet until sold for further use in 1982. Minibuses of any kind were rare amongst municipal operators at the time and quite different from the more bus-like ‘bread van’ conversions of later years. I believe this example was converted from a standard Ford factory-built crew bus by Deansgate PSV of Manchester. This digital representation (based on a vehicle photographed in Malta) is not exact in every detail, particularly the style of wheel trims (16-Feb-25).

Unfortunately, the only day I could make it to the 2022 Cheltenham Festival was “Wet Wednesday”, with the torrential downpours making photography hard for both myself and my poor camera. However excuses aside, pictured arriving at The Racecourse is YT21 LGC, an impressive and luxurious Irizar i8 Integral C43Ft coach new to Johnsons, Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire in May 2021.

There was a good turn out of vehicles and visitors to the Friends of King Alfred Running Day on the early May Day Bank Holiday 2023. A day of mixed weather didn't dampen the spirits!
