Shifting Paradigms from Mass Production to Mass Customization
Computational architecture and design course
Conventional construction methods all depart from the basic premises of mass production: standardization, modulation and a production line. What these systems developed during the last two centuries fail to take into account are the evolutionary leaps and bounds the manufacturing industry has taken over the last decades. With the introduction of CNC technologies and rapid prototyping machines have altered the paradigms of fabrication forever. It is due to these new tools that it is now possible to create (n) amount of completely unique and different pieces with the same amount of energy and material that is required to create (n) identical pieces. The possibilities for implementation of new forms, textures, materials and languages are infinite due to the versatility that these new tools offer a growing network of architects, designers, fabricators that are integrating them into their professional practices to generate unique and precise objects that respond to countless data and real-life conditions.

Slogans in Nice Typefaces Won't Save the Human Races poster
Oddly Head, UK
2017
This typographic provocation appeared on UK city streets in late 2017 via flyingleaps, an artists' street project founded by Adrian Burnham, whose particular interest is visual activism in urban environments. It was created by British artist and graphic designer Tim Fishlock, working under his alter ego Oddly Head. The bold graphic slogan was a response to what he calls 'an epoch of demagoguery and debacle' and was popular across social media.

Part of Hope to Nope: Graphics and Politics 2008-18
US presidents bookend Hope to Nope: Graphics and Politics 2008-18, which highlights through displays of banners, badges, quilts, placards, animations, filmed footage, T-shirts and hats, among other items, how graphic design has been used to engage with social, political and environmental upheavals worldwide during the past decade...
...The thread running through it all, however, is the rapid development during the past 10 years of information sharing and social-media platforms. They may employ highly simplified graphic icons as their brand identities but there’s nothing unsophisticated about the extraordinary international reach and potential influence

Set on the morning of January 6, 2021, Fight for America! explores the legacy of the Capitol riot and the gamification of American politics. Participants are invited to literally play out the events of the day - grappling with questions of division, democracy, and dialogue as they do.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE TICKETS ARE 'PLAYER' TICKETS
At the heart of this experience is a sprawling 50’ x 50’ game board featuring 10,000 hand-painted miniatures and a 14-foot-wide scale model of the U.S. Capitol Building. Guided by an enigmatic Gamemaster in the form of Uncle Sam, up to 20 players take on roles in one of two factions:
TEAM RED – vs – TEAM BLUE
Each side represents a vision of America in conflict - and must reckon with the fundamental question: What about America is worth fighting for?
Designed by UK-based game developer Alessio Cavatore (Warhammer 40K, Bolt Action), the gameplay is driven by uncertainty, improvisation, and real-time decision making. Equal parts theatrical spectacle and political provocation, Fight for America! offers an unflinching look at the forces shaping - and shaking - the foundation of American democracy. Snacks provided | Bar available
Access to exclusive performances, including to play with Legendary Game Designer, Alessio Cavatore, are available through the american vicarious' Kickstarter campaign.
