The lower falls is part of a three fall grouping on the Provo river in the Uinta Mountains. This is an easy set of falls to visit and if you are in Salt Lake City, you should add this to your To Do list.

An early morning shot with clouds passing by – I had to wait a little while for a cloud break so I could capture the mountain peak.

A pair of MK GP40M-2s pull SP’s UT04L, departing Provo, Utah for Roper Yard the afternoon of Oct. 1, 1995. It appears SP 7135’s plow smacked into something along the way.

This is the Upper Provo River in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. At this site, there are three separate falls which makes for great photography. Mid July is a little late in the waterfall season as most snow melt has already run, but the falls still had a nice flow.

I choose to go on a cloudy afternoon to avoid any shadows. This is the upper most set of falls.

A westbound Southern Pacific manifest blasts through Provo, Utah the afternoon of May 20, 1991. GE B39-8 No. 8016 was built new for the Southern Pacific in Aug. 1987.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr is less than a mile from it’s scheduled stop in Provo, Utah the morning of May 11, 1986. A group of surplus Rio Grande flat cars are stashed away in the old Salt Lake & Utah Railroad freight yard.

Fall at Provo Falls, the water is low, the air cool, and the people, well there were none. It was unspoiled nature.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr train No. 6 arrives at the Rio Grande passenger station in Provo, Utah the morning of Oct. 27, 1985. The brick and tile roofed structure was completed in 1911, vacated by Amtrak late in October 1986, and demolished.

While 11,068 ft. Provo Peak looms in the nearby Wasatch, Utah Railway and Union Pacific EMDs idle in Provo, Utah on Nov. 25, 2018. Heartening to think these two carriers that shared a yard jointly when I was a young kid are still doing just that.

Rio Grande GP9 No. 5911 idles on a sunny Sunday morning at the D&RGW sanding and fueling facility in Provo, Utah on March 13, 1977.

Six of Rio Grande's 24 GP9s were updated with the large, stacked "Billboard Grande" logo. 5911 was built by EMD for the D&RGW in May of 1955 and retired in April 1984.

By June of 1984, 5911 was sold to Mid America Car in Kansas City, Kansas. By July, it was sold to Kyle Railway, and by December 1986, to Railtex. In March of 1987, it began service at Austin & Northwestern. Lastly, former 5911 was rebuilt, becoming a slug by National Railway Equipment, ultimately migrating to the Missouri & Northern Arkansas.

D&RGW GP9s No. 5931 and 5942 lead local freight No. 669 from Provo, Utah to Geneva Steel the morning of June 30, 1983. Rio Grande's first generation diesels had been pulled from storage in the spring of 1983, and we were making the most of the opportunity.

After some nice day hiking in the Uinta Range, I headed out to visit some relatives who live in Utah. I stopped at this waterfall along the way, trying to find places to photograph in shadow where the red rock reflected in the water.

Hazy autumn view on Provo city, Utah, this viewpoint is accessible by a paved road, and it was a Sunday night, so the place was packed with people (almost none of them wearing masks, though since then I have experienced far worse Covidfest situations, thankfully no symptoms so far). I'm sorry if I can't respond to all past comments, I'll try to do my best, thanks and a great weekend to everyone.

Rio Grande 3001, the first GP30 on Rio Grande's roster of 28 units, leads train No. 662 through the Salt Lake Valley at 7:06 a.m. on July 25, 1989. The 662 was called daily at Roper Yard by 5:00 a.m., and was often chasing the first rays of sun as it traveled east to work at Geneva Steel and Provo.

Once dawn breaks it takes awhile for the sun to climb up over the mountains east of Provo. I've always loved the cardboard cut out look of the mountains in the mornings.

Rio Grande's 'Salina Local' is stopped at the yard office in Provo, Utah on Dec. 12, 1976. The caboose hop will pickup its train here prior to departing east and will exit the mainline at Thistle, continuing its journey southward along the Marysvale Branch into central Utah.
