The Afsluitdijk provides a road link between the provinces of Friesland and North Holland. Since North Holland was part of Vesting Holland ("Fortress Holland"), the national redoubt of the Netherlands at the time, and control of the sluices in the Afsluitdijk was necessary for planned defensive inundations in case of a military invasion, Kornwerderzand was considered strategically important by the Dutch government. From 1931 onwards, fortifications consisting of seventeen casemates and three bunkers were constructed. The position was manned with approximately 220 troops in 1939.
During the German invasion of the Netherlands in World War II, the Kornwerderzand position was defended by Dutch troops. On May 13 and May 14, 1940, the fortifications were attacked by the German first Cavalry Division, while the Luftwaffe attacked supporting Dutch naval units. The German troops, initially lacking support by heavy artillery, were unable to take the position. The fortifications also withstood attacks by dive bombers. The next day the Dutch military in the Netherlands (except for the province of Zealand) surrendered, and the battle ended with the surrender of the position.
In 1943, the occupying German military improved the defenses by building three additional bunkers.
Nowadays, some of the fortifications can be visited as part of the Kazemattenmuseum ("casemate museum").
A dramatic Chandra image from 2008 of the nearby galaxy Centaurus A provides one of the best views to date of the effects of an active supermassive black hole. Opposing jets of high-energy particles can be seen extending to the outer reaches of the galaxy, and numerous smaller black holes in binary star systems are also visible.
The image was made from an ultra-deep look at the galaxy Centaurus A, equivalent to more than seven days of continuous observations. Centaurus A is the nearest galaxy to Earth that contains a supermassive black hole actively powering a jet.
A prominent X-ray jet extending for 13,000 light years points to the upper left in the image, with a shorter "counterjet" aimed in the opposite direction. Astronomers think that such jets are important vehicles for transporting energy from the black hole to the much larger dimensions of a galaxy, and affecting the rate at which stars form there.
High-energy electrons spiraling around magnetic field lines produce the X-ray emission from the jet and counterjet. This emission quickly saps the energy from the electrons, so they must be continually reaccelerated or the X-rays will fade out. Knot-like features in the jets detected in the Chandra image show where the acceleration of particles to high energies is currently occurring, and provides important clues to understanding the process that accelerates the electrons to near-light speeds.

Montezuma National Wildlife refuge provides resting, feeding, and nesting habitat for waterfowl and other migratory birds. Montezuma is situated in the middle of one of the most active flight lanes in the Atlantic Flyway.
Two hundred forty-two species of birds, 43 species of mammals, 15 species of reptiles, and 16 species of amphibians can be found on the refuge for at least part of the year. The wide array of wildlife can be credited to the varied habitat types found there, from marsh to forest, shrub- and grassland.

Since we have had a week of rain I had to dig in to last months camping pics!!
We all love photography judges who give us first place, but when our photos slide past unnoticed, well, the judges are simply Philistines. Can't they recognise our brilliance!
There is a part of me that would prefer not to judge photography competitions because all I can offer is a subjective opinion. And often I am asked to provide a comment or suggestion as to how a photograph could be improved or strengthened. Essentially I am being asked how I would have photographed or presented the image to get a higher score. Should I be doing this?
Recently, I listened to judges discuss one of my prints which had a grainy, black and white finish. One said that he didn't know why I had applied the finish as it wasn't something he would have done – and maybe it would be better without the finish.
This set me thinking: does this judge mean that unless I create photographs the way he does, he won't give me a high score? And if this judge doesn't like grainy black and whites, does that mean he will never score such entries highly?
To be fair to the judge in question, he was trying to be helpful by making a suggestion as to how the image could be improved.
So let me give another example. I am not a big fan of HDR (High Dynamic Range) photographs, but I gave an HDR photograph first place in a competition not so long ago. Personally, subjectively, I didn't like the photograph much, but as an example of its kind, it was superlative.
I think that from time to time, judges have to step aside from their biases and judge the photograph as an example of its kind. Perhaps the judge looking at my photo should have assessed it on the basis that the entrant chose to submit a grainy black and white print: was this a good or bad example of its kind?
So, what's different when I'm critiquing a photograph that I think could be improved? For instance, I find a white sky incredibly distracting, so I suggest that the photographer could have found a different camera angle, crop the image, or somehow darken down the sky to improve it. What's the difference between this advice and suggesting that a photograph would be better if it wasn't a grainy black and white?
Context.
In the first situation, the judge seemed to acknowledge that the underlying technique was good, it was the final finish he didn't like. He didn't say the finish was over done or poorly handled, just that it wasn't necessary. So perhaps he didn't judge what had been presented, rather he judged what hadn't been presented.
In the second situation, the base photograph with the bright sky was not communicating correctly and a different approach was required. (In my opinion, I know.)
The difference is subtle and it's not always possible for a judge to know if an entrant is investigating a genre of photography or just doesn't know any better. That's the problem with judges – and for judges. Often we just don't know.
So while a part of me doesn't like judging, on the other hand it's something I greatly enjoy. I love being exposed to different styles of work and new ideas. It is incredibly inspirational and so are photo competitions. Of course, you probably don't expect me to say anything different. Our inaugural International Landscape Photographer of the Year Award has had around 2000 entries, but if you missed out, we'll be announcing our annual Better Photography Photograph of the Year Award later this month!
So, the problem with judges is what?

I was going for some long exposures and am in the habit of checking the exposure with a 'straight' exposure first. As it happened I liked the result without the long exposure. The greenery is only visible for half an hour or so, before the tide covers it all. The polariser is really strong and makes a blue sky really dark at the top. I don't know what you think but any thoughts would be welcome. I feel the need for a polariser to give the foreground a purer colour and more contrast to the sky. Can't remember the 2 filters used. I think a 0.6 H and a 0.6 soft.

The moor of Lostmarc’h on the Crozon Peninsula provides some breathtaking landscapes and seascapes. When I took this photo, it was a very dark, damp and desolate end of afternoon in December, and I didn't have much hope as I walked the moor towards the lone standing stone that remains of the alignment that once stood there, millennia ago.
I was quite alone, as the weather was truly miserable, but suddenly, a miraculous swath of sunlight cut through the thick clouds and shone over the ocean in the bay, providing a very nice background. I quickly set up an off–camera cobra flash on the ground to provide some fill–in light on the stone face, and took the shot.
Thirty seconds thereafter, as on a well–set timer, the clouds closed in again and the light was gone. It began to rain (again), and I could but walk back to the car.
This is a recent black-and-white interpretation of the original photo. I will also, some day, upload the color one taken in December 2018.
An early Polyantha from 1913. Polyanthas are the precursors of the modern Floribundas and first appeared in France in the late 19th century, alongside the hybrid teas. Polyanthas typically carriy their flowers in large sprays and are prolific bloomers. Though well into November, our 'Marie-Jeanne' has produced another flush of flowers, this time pale pink instead of the usual white - a result, we presume, of less intense sun light and cold nights. The autumn foliage of a Wisteria provides a fitting backdrop. From our garden.

To provide scale, the tongue of the glacier is 3 km wide. Tasersuaq Glacier is 70kms long after it leaves the Greenland Ice Sheet. This glacier is one of six that drain into Godtha˚bsfjord.
Scientists are currently studying the glacier in response to climate change. The runoff is measured and assessed and also the surface mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet in the Nuuk region (southwest of Greenland) is being measured, observed and assessed using output of two regional climate models.
My oblique aerial photograph also reveals the regional jointing and faults in the landmass.
The outwash of meltwater and moraine extends for 7 kms down the valley then enters Lake Tasersuaq. In this image much of the surface of the lake has refrozen through the winter and in early summer when this was photographed the lake ice was at its maximum extent.
It’s reached that time where I select one photo from each of the past 12 months to provide a general round-up on the year; things that were new this year; things that we won’t see after this year; plus anything else I felt the need to include. A lot seemed to happen in the sphere of East Mids public transport in 2025, so of course this isn’t an exhaustive list – just bits and pieces I saw on a month-by-month basis.
Jan:
I didn’t see all that much in Januray, however it was notable that from here on out NCT introduced a policy of reducing the number of biogas buses running on Sundays, substituting similarly coloured diesels and spares alongside a lessened biogas allocation. The 35 and 36 therefore got reacquainted with the orange 14 plate E400s... again. Unlike turquoise and red lines, orange line hasn’t been blessed with quite as many odd allocations as NCT still seem to prefer using spares or the regular biogas buses over the 34s. Here on 26.1.25 Uni 34 branded 623 is seen in Chilwell with a 36.

A fairly big ‘last’ this year was the cessation of TrentBarton Wright Solars in passenger service, as 669 unceremoniously bowed out with a fault on the Comet sometime in the autumn and is destined for the training fleet. Throughout Wellglade’s chronic vehicle shortages of the past few years, the steadily dwindling fleet of Solars kept things moving when newer stock weren’t up to the task... or toasting themselves. TrentBarton won’t be quite the same without them, since the L94UBs were arguably the most iconic vehicles in the fleet. 669 is pictured on 24.2.25 passing University Park with a Skylink.
Mar:
Talking about vehicles iconic to their fleets, Nottingham City Transport and Scania Omnidekkas have been synonymous for over 20 years. But as of me writing this they’ve just taken delivery of six Wrightbus double deckers that will likely see off the final remaining Omnidekkas in passenger service. 929 was one which got the chop earlier this year when three E400s were moved onto the 4, seen in late winter afternoon sunlight as it heads along Wilford Lane on 27.3.25
Apr:
Somewhat belatedly, TrentBarton repainted an Enviro 200 MMC to replace indigo 207, which was burnt out by an engine fire in September 2023. 216 was the chosen vehicle, being part of the indigo batch as a Mango-liveried spare bus and consecutively numbered above them. Meanwhile, a similar story has unfolded on the Skylink, where 125 went up in flames and was ultimately replaced on the route by 128; having originally been a Blue Skylink, later moved across to Yellow Skylink and now back to blue again. In this picture 216 is seen in Chilwell on 22.4.25
May:
The beginning of the end is here for the Midland Main Line’s class 222 ‘Meridian’ trains, as East Midlands Railway are (finally) rolling out their fleet of class 810s that were originally promised years ago. Some 222s are bound for Lumo for use on competing services along the WCML and the rest rumoured to eventually head to ScotRail to replace the Inter7City HSTs. In the meantime, the 222s have been limping up and down the MML with broken interior fixtures and isolated engines, covering more diagrams than they were ever intended to and with minimal downtime for maintenance. 222012 is seen at Derby on 30.5.25
Jun:
The story of the 222s isn’t all that different to what became of the Red Arrow’s Plaxton Elites. During the years since Covid the reliability of these coaches just seemed to tank, with the RA routinely missing journeys and heavily relying on Meadow Road’s overstretched fleet of spare buses. It was common to see one broken down at the side of the road – hardly befitting the premium brand TrentBarton attach to the route. Their replacements eventually came in late summer in the shape of nine Yutong GT12s, plus a spare. Before then, 83 is seen diverting down University Boulevard on 20.6.25
Jul:
Half way into the year we finally get an instalment from Stagecoach East Midlands, and I was up in Cleethorpes having visited the Grimsby depot open day and seeking out one more Seasider that I needed to spot. Cascades from other divisions – particularly the E400 MMC exodus from Manchester – has killed off the majority of the decent vehicles that were still left at East Mids. Pretty much everything pre-Enviro has gone now, with a few of Grimsby’s Eclipses and a couple of Solos at Spalding being the only exceptions of note. Unlikely to return next Spring, Splash is seen on 12.7.25, parked opposite Euro 3 E400 “stealth Trident” 19115 – another type only just clinging on in an increasingly un-diverse fleet.
Aug:
In a significant blow for CT4N, Skills took over the Medilink from September. This also spelt the end for the fleet of 2016 BYD K94UR battery electric buses that Nottingham City Council bought, initially for the Centrelink and Ecolink P&R services. Much like the Red Arrow Plaxtons already described, their reliability was on the decline since the pandemic and the Medilink was increasingly propped up by CT4N’s diesels. The BYDs were immediately stood down once the contract ended, and while a couple have found new homes the City Council are attempting to flog the remainder off for spares or repair. 982 is seen at QMC on 29.8.25; one of its final days in service.
Sep:
A smaller development has seen Nottinghamshire County Council buy a new batch of Mellor Orion bodied Fiat minibuses. These differ from the previous Orions by all being in the attractive blue, green and white Nottsbus Connect livery, having tinted glazing, restyled front ends, and for some reason a repositioned rear axle. The new 25 plate Mellors definitely give the Nottsbus routes a better feel than the older minibuses in bland, welfare transport white. Showing the new look on the 536, SD25 UVR is pictured at Beeston Interchange on 30.9.25
Oct:
Volvo Olympians – where have they all gone?! It wasn’t that long ago that an Olympian was a staple member of almost any schools/contract operator’s fleet, yet they’ve seemingly disappeared overnight. The main culprit seems to be the number of Gemini bodied B9TLs appearing on the 2nd hand market forcing the older and more interesting buses away from the various school bus and coach companies – especially the seemingly incessant number of ex-Lothian ones. Tiger European appear to be the last local operator in Nottingham still turning to Olympian power, and their T450 JJF is seen at Canning Circus on 8.10.25
Nov:
Well I can’t really round up my year without mentioning this thing – and I’m not exaggerating by saying that I’ve been doing battle with it for the whole year. ALX400 Trident operation at Stagecoach East Midlands came to an end in 2025; a type that has been around these parts since Stagecoach placed an early batch at Grimsby in 1999. With none of the region’s more well known Plaxton Presidents finding a saviour I set my sights on securing an ALX, to keep the spirit of the East Midlands Tridents alive, and fought tooth and nail to repatriate one of the few which didn’t end up in the Barnsley scrap yards. Back when the batteries still had some charge in them, 18418 shows off some working lights on 8.11.25
Dec:
Another batch of Yutong E10s and E12s landed at NCT in the latter half of the year, bringing the total number to 62 and completing the quota for replacing the existing diesel single deck fleet, save for a few Solos retained for when they take on the 90 in the New Year. Again it shows a shrinkage in variation that’s plaguing every bus fleet nowadays, effectively reducing the single deckers to just two types. Oh well, could be worse I guess. On Queen Street, 282 sets off with a blue line 41 on 3.12.25
As you probably well know, I've got a massive backlog of photos from 2025 so the full features of outings such as Cleethorpes are still to come! All the best for 2026...
This photo provides a pretty good illustration of why the GCFX "grey ghost" leasers were hated during their tenure on the CN. They came on the scene while there were plenty of great looking SD45s in operation. One quickly got the impression that any slight malfunction in a SD45 would sideline it and a GCFX would replace it. Eventually the last of the '45s were killed off. The GCFXs didn't seem to last too much longer once the "good" power was gone, but the damage was done, and some colorful lashups muted by the grey plague. March 8, 2003.

Bryce Canyon National Park is a National Park located in southwestern Utah in the United States. The major feature of the park is Bryce Canyon, which despite its name, is not a canyon, but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange, and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views for park visitors. Bryce sits at a much higher elevation than nearby Zion National Park. The rim at Bryce varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet (2,400 to 2,700 m).
The Bryce Canyon area was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850s and was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who homesteaded in the area in 1874. The area around Bryce Canyon became a National Monument in 1923 and was designated as a National Park in 1928. The park covers 35,835 acres (55.992 sq mi; 14,502 ha; 145.02 km2) and receives relatively few visitors compared to Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon, largely due to its remote location.

The Jökulsárlón lake provides outstanding views of the ice cap, a vast dome of ice that rises to a height of 3,000 ft (910 m). It spills to the lagoon 12 mi (19 km) away from the jagged glacier hill to the edge of the water line. The lake developed only about 60 years ago (1948 is mentioned), when the entire area was less than 100 ft (30 m) of glacier, which was only 250 yd (230 m) from the Atlantic Ocean, and 2 mi (3.2 km) away from Vatnajökull. Vatnajökull was at the shore line of the ocean and dropped icebergs into the ocean. However, it started drifting inland rapidly every year, leaving deep gorges en route, which got filled with melted water and large chunks of ice. These icebergs gather at the mouth of the lake's shallow exit, melt down into smaller ice blocks, and roll out into the sea. In summer, icebergs melt and roll down the channel into the sea. The lake does not freeze in winter. Ice water and soil make a unique ecological phenomenon. Jökulsárlón Lake, the "glacier lake", is now reported to have doubled in size in the recent 15-year period. The huge blocks of ice that calve from the edge of Vatnajökull are about 30 m (98 ft) high, which fills the lagoon stocked with icebergs. Some icebergs appear naturally sculpted on account volcanic ash from ancient eruptions that partly covers them
Given the current retreat rate of Vatnajökull, likely a deep fjord will develop where Jökulsárlón is now. This retreat is also posing a threat to the National Highway Route 1 of Iceland. The lagoon is 75 km (47 mi) to the west of Höfn town and 60 km (37 mi) east of Skaftafell. It is accessible by the ring road, Route 1, that goes across the lake, and where parking facilities have been provided for visitors. It is also known as the "tourist conveyor belt".Isolated large blocks of icebergs can be seen on the black sand beach, sometimes called "diamond beach" because of ice chunks scattered on the sand.
The icebergs that calve from the glacier edge move towards the river mouth and get entrenched at the bottom. The movement of the icebergs fluctuates with the tide currents, as well as being affected by wind. However, they start floating as icebergs when their size is small enough to drift to the sea. These icebergs are seen in two shades: milky white and bright blue, which depends on the air trapped within the ice and is an interplay of light and ice crystals.

Royal Gibraltar Regiment trains in the UK
Soldiers from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment have recently completed their annual four-week exercise in the UK where they have made use of training facilities not available on The Rock.
After their mandatory shooting tests on the impressive ranges at Hythe in Kent, the troops moved on to Sennybridge to make full use of the huge Brecon Beacons training area.
Unusually, the weather in South Wales was warm and sunny, so sunny in fact that a ban was imposed on the use of certain types of weapons because of the increasing number of large-scale grass fires.
During the exercise, the regiment was visited by its Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns, and by the British High Commissioner to The Gambia, Mr Phil Sinkinson. Sir Adrian said:
"I have been very impressed with the regiment's skills and motivation. Clearly, the exercise has been planned to gain maximum value from those facilities which are not available in Gibraltar."
Whilst at Hythe, every soldier completed his annual combat marksmanship test which included distances of 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 metres. To fail at any one of these distances meant that a soldier failed the whole test.
Major Ivor Lopez said:
"Hythe's ranges are excellent. As well as the rifle ranges, there are ranges for sniper weapons, for our underslung grenade launchers and for our light support weapons.
"There is also a full scale 'village' in which we can practise our internal security tactics. We don't have these facilities in Gibraltar so we have to exploit this opportunity to the full."
After a long journey to the Sennybridge Training Area in South Wales, the troops stepped off the coach straight onto the training area and into five days of living 'in the field', carrying everything they needed on their backs.
During this period they practised all their basic infantry skills and relearned the art of living out in the open. Although the days were sunny and warm, night-time temperatures often dropped below zero.
The sheer size of the training area provided an opportunity to brush up on map-reading skills, so essential for soldiers who are not used to such an expanse of training land or navigating using 1:50000 maps.
It also tested the Regiment's ability to communicate by the use of radios across an area many times the size of Gibraltar. Major Lopez continued:
"We have brought twenty Moroccan troops with us and that also makes us think about how we work in a multinational environment.
"Soldiers' basic skills are learned here in Sennybridge and then adapted for use in Gibraltar. And everything that will be used later in the year on Exercise Jebel Sahara has been learned here."
A further advantage of training in the Brecon Beacons is that most of the Army's infantry courses are held there. The better the regiment's troops get to know Brecon, the better their chances of doing well on their career courses.
By the middle of the third week of the exercise, the troops were carrying out company-sized attacks using 'live' ammunition and 'live' hand grenades.
In one attack, three sections each of eight men made their way up a tight valley, knowing that the 'enemy' was hidden somewhere and was about to open fire on them.
The 'enemy' was represented by electronically-operated pop-up targets but as each soldier ran and dived for cover before opening fire with at least thirty 'live' rounds, there had to be some very real safety measures in place.
Private Daniel Rodgers said:
"I've enjoyed all the live firing. A lot of it has been exciting and I've learned a lot of new skills.
"At the recruit infantry training centre you don't do the training for Fighting In Built Up Areas and I've never done platoon attacks with 'live' ammunition. I'm really enjoying it."
Running separately from the main exercise is the six-week Junior Non-Commissioned Officers' cadre. This tough course helps the regiment select which of its top Private soldiers will achieve their promotion to Lance Corporal.
Several members of the cadre have already dropped off the course and others have injured themselves so the numbers are falling.
Private Luke Willis said:
"We know that promotion depends on how well we do here. Everyone wants to get one of the top slots. The first week was tough as we had snow and ice at night but since then the weather has improved - until today!"
The final days of the exercise saw the cadre setting off on its final task whilst the main regimental exercise was moving into its most intense phase.
The officers who planned the annual exercise had aimed for something that was 'ambitious but achievable' and, clearly, they had certainly achieved their aim.
The Regiment's Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Risso, said:
"This exercise qualifies our unit and our people for all our operationally-mandated tasks in Gibraltar and goes further in preparing every commander and soldier for wider professional utility.
"Let's be under no illusion, this is serious business and we will seize every opportunity we can to achieve the best results."

About Westwood Plateau
WESTWOOD PLATEAU…Experiences Above & Beyond
When award-winning golf architect Michael Hurdzan, Golf World Magazine’s 1997 Architect of the Year, sets out to design a course he says that he wants to “create a ‘Wow’ effect for golfers.” At his Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club, named ‘Best New Course in Canada in 1996’ by SCOREGolf Magazine, Hurdzan created his patented “Wow” effect on virtually every hole.
As a result, there is no ‘signature’ hole at the spectacular layout on Eagle Mountain because each hole stands alone. Yet each hole bears Hurdzan’s distinctive signature. “This is a magical piece of ground,” said Hurdzan. “When we built the course, the whole intent was to keep the great views, keep the special ethereal feeling and still create as wide a course as we could so that the average golfer could enjoy it.” Hurdzan not only achieved his lofty goal, he exceeded it. On this magical Coquitlam plateau 30 minutes east and 1,300 feet above Vancouver, the golf values are as pure as the snow on the distant mountain peaks. Little wonder that in 1999, Golf Digest called Westwood Plateau: “The best game in town.”
Whether playing from the back tees at 6,770 yards or from any of the other three tee boxes that gradually shorten the course to 5,514 yards, players are confronted by a singular challenge on each hole – deciding whether the view is more striking from the tee or from the green. The ProShot GPS system on each power cart takes the pressure off club selection by displaying precise yardages on easy-to-read screens. It also provides yardages to the hazards; individual tips on playing the hole; updates on your tournament; and ProShot can quickly relay messages in case of emergencies. In addition to the on-cart GPS, you’ll also receive range balls, day locker, bottled water, tee gift, and continental breakfast included in your fees. Other available extras range from transportation via helicopter from downtown Vancouver to fully-stocked personal mini bars on your cart. These above and beyond services helped earn Westwood Plateau ‘5th Best Customer Service in North America’, as ranked by 6500 Golf Digest readers, and Golf Digest’s 4 1/2 - star rating in their Best Places to Play edition.
A fully public facility, Westwood Plateau offers 27 holes of outstanding golf, two distinct restaurants, a nationally recognized teaching academy and a 35,000 square foot clubhouse perfect for corporate entertaining and weddings.
Westwood Plateau’s mission statement is simple – To deliver Above & Beyond experiences through superior service and product quality! We look forward to serving you!

Every so often the weather conditions provide the most incredible opportunities for the landscape photographer. On a recent visit to North Berwick in Scotland, I was fortunate enough to capture one of those breathtaking moments shortly after daybreak. The first rays of sunlight really set the sky alight, creating a truly spectacular coastal sunrise. The light brushing the tips of the long grass in the foreground really adds something extra special for me. Thanks for looking – Mk
My florist provides me with some beautiful blooms to fill my house with. Much was my delight to discover these white and mauve chrysanthemums in his shop. The humidity that we are currently experiencing this summer won't make these blooms droop, as they are very hardy and long lasting.
Chrysanthemums, what I still call "mums", are also known as "chrysanths" by my mother and many other people. They are flowering plants of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae. They are native to Asia and northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia and the center of diversity is in China. Countless horticultural varieties and cultivars exist.

The buildings of Thirassia are very run down and provide a contrast with the manicured terraces of Oia and their hordes of tourists.
The Atacama desert provides one of the purest starry skies on Earth. The sky is so clear and dark that rare phenomena can actually be observed. For example, in this picture taken from Cerro Paranal Observatory (home to the Very Large Telescope), we clearly see two separate sources of natural light:
- The Zodiacal light: a white tilted cone of light which comes from the diffusion of sunlight by dust particles located in space (within the inner orbital plane of the solar system).
- The Airglow: an orange/red veil of light covering almost the whole sky. Airglow is a chemiluminescence process that results in the production of light after UV sunlight interacted with molecules/atoms of the upper layers of the atmosphere. The absorption of UV light by the atmosphere is only temporal and ends by remitting energy under the form of visible light.
This view was taken from Paranal Residencia located about 2 kilometers away from Cerro Paranal which you can spot in the middle of the image: a flat mount on top of which four tiny rectangular domes are installed: they are the four telescopes forming one of the most powerful astronomical infrastructure of the world: the Very Large Telescope or VLT.

This late 40s chevy pickup truck sits parked in front of a gas station, likely as old if not older than the truck, that shares the same markings. The truck was almost certainly used as a work truck for the service station to provide assistance to those who needed it or get supplies for the store. Shot on a Pentax 6x7 using Kodak film.
From the Washington Trails Association:
The furthest northwest tip of the contiguous United State, Cape Flattery provides a dramatic backdrop to a surprisingly accessible hike. It's managed by the Makah Tribe, who provide permits for parking here at Washburn's General Store, The Makah Museum, and many other locations in Neah Bay. As you drive through on the way to the trailhead, be sure to purchase yours -- they're good for the year, and you can also use it for Shi Shi Beach.
From the trailhead, depart down a wide, graveled trail into open forest. Heading gently downhill, the trail narrows down to boardwalk, keeping hikers out of the worst of the mud before transitioning to rooty tread. Signs along the way encourage you to stay on the trail; please honor these. This area sees enough traffic that a spur trail can quickly impact the area in a bad way. Preserve your future visits here by remaining on trail during this visit.
Eventually, the trail returns to boardwalk, carrying you over a boggy sections as the wind intensifies. You're approaching the point. Three turnoffs exist that allow you to see views from all sides of the point. The first branches off to the left, to a viewing platform that allows you to peer down the sheer south side of the point. The second, a few hundred feet further down the trail, is a two-layered affair, where you can enjoy an expansive view north from the upper deck, and a more intimate view of the sea caves below from the lower layer.
The third and last is, appropriately, the piece-de-resistance: a viewing platform accessed via a very steep but short stepladder. Straight ahead is Tatoosh Island. A lonely lighthouse sits on the island, which is constantly buffeted by waves and wind. To the north, it's the rocks of Cape Flattery reef, while to the south it's Kessiso Rocks. Birds wing in the breeze, and the seas around here teem with life.
The constant pounding surf and the meeting of water with land here provides an ideal place for animals of all sorts to feed. As you gaze out on the Pacific, look for seagulls, cormorants, shorebirds of many other sorts, and marine animals like whales or otters playing in the surf.
When you've had your fill, return the way you came.
Last Dollar Road provides a scenic alternative to the paved highway when traveling between Ridgway and Telluride, Colorado. It traverses through a rural ranchland setting before ascending through spruce-fir and aspen forest, providing occasional views of Wilson Peak and Greyhead. It is a popular road for viewing the fall colors.

The eastern meadowlark provides a bright splash of color on Florida's open grassy fields and prairies. Scan fence posts, low bushes or power lines for the adult bird with its yellow throat, breast and belly, and black "V" across the chest. Or listen for the sweet, melodious song: a plaintive, clear, descending whistle.
The eastern meadowlark breeds throughout eastern and central North America and in Mexico and parts of Central America and the Caribbean. This year-round Florida resident is not a lark, as its name suggests, but is in the same family as blackbirds and orioles. In size and shape, a perched meadowlark resembles a starling, but it is quail-like in its explosive take-off from the ground. Insects make up the bulk of the meadowlark's diet, but grass and weed seeds are also consumed.
In Florida, breeding takes place from late March through July. During courtship, the male jumps straight up into the air to display its bright yellow and black markings. Males often have two mates at a time. Females build nests on the ground, weaving fine grasses into surrounding vegetation and often incorporating a domed canopy of grass into the construction. Many nests are destroyed each year when cultivated fields are mowed.
Eastern meadowlarks are common on the prairies and pastures of the Florida peninsula, and are found throughout the state in suitable open habitat, including croplands and golf courses. In general, however, scientists have noted gradual population declines throughout the eastern meadowlark's range, probably due to habitat loss.
Found this one along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County Florida.

North Head Lighthouse was built to provide an aide to navigation for ships approaching from the north. Those ships could not see Cape Disappointment lighthouse, two miles to the south, in time to safely enter the Columbia River channel.
Construction began on North Head lighthouse in 1897 and it was completed and lit on May 16, 1898. The lighthouse was constructed by George Langford, an early contractor and builder from Portland, Oregon. The tower was built 65 feet above the ground, designed large enough to hold the First-order Fresnel lens transferred from Cape Disappointment lighthouse.
Written in the “Report of the Light-house Board for 1898, “The contractors for furnishing the metal work delivered it on August 15, 1897, 173 days after the expiration of the time for the completion of their contract, incurring a penalty for delay of $4,325, or $160 in excess of the amount they were to receive under the contract.” The government granted the contractor an extension until November 15, 1897. The station was finally completed on April 10, 1898. The next month it went into commission. The contractor filed suit against the United States to recover $5,868, damages. The final outcome is not known.
At the same time the lighthouse was being constructed, construction workers built two oil houses just to the east of the lighthouse. A keeper’s residence, a duplex to house two assistant keepers, a barn, and outbuildings were also constructed at that time. All of the original buildings are still located on site.
Lighthouse keepers and their families had a remote and hard life. Keepers would traditionally work 8 hour shifts if there were three keepers. If one of the keepers left, the hours would become much longer. The light was lit from dusk to dawn with cleaning and polishing being done during the daylight hours. The cleaning and maintenance of the light and lens was the most important duty of the keepers.
The first head lighthouse keeper at North Head was Alex K. Pesonen. He was placed in charge of North Head lighthouse on May 16, 1898, the day the lighthouse was put into service.
Keeper Pesonen had at one time served on the lighthouse tender “Manzanita” and as an assistant keeper at Tillamook lighthouse. He lived at North Head for 26 years.
During the time Pesonen was head keeper, he had a second assistant keeper by the name of Mabel E. Bretherton. She was the only female keeper assigned to North Head lighthouse. From 1905 until her resignation on October 31, 1907 she assisted in the care and operation of the light. Mabel Bretherton had also served at Cape Blanco lighthouse in Oregon prior to coming to North Head.
I'm always on the lookout for viewpoints which provide contrast between traditional and contemporary architecture. I was therefore pleased to find this view on Wilhelminakade of the OMA De Rotterdam skyscraper and an adjacent 19th Century (I'm guessing......) Warehouse.

From Wikipedia : "De Rotterdam is a building on the Wilhelminapier in Rotterdam, designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1998. The complex is located between the KPN Tower and Rotterdam Cruise Terminal and was finalized at the end of 2013. On 21 November 2013, the municipality of Rotterdam, as the largest user, received the keys. The design provides space for offices, a hotel and apartments. The 44 floors amount to a total floor space area of about 160,000 m², making it the largest building in the Netherlands"

From now on, I will host "Lot No.402_".
The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.
That is the number when it was put up for auction.
No sign was written on the work.
So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.
However, as a result of various appraisals, it was exposed to the sun.
A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.
I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

Interviews and novels.
About my book.
I published a book a long time ago.
At that time, I uploaded my interview as a PDF on the internet.
Its Japanese and English.
I will publish it for free.
For details, I explained to the Amazon site.
How to write a novel.
How to take a picture.
A sense of distance to the work.
All of these have something in common.
I wrote down what I felt and left it.
I hope my text will be read by many people.
Thank you.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

The morning sun provides little warmth on this windy, cold, February day as Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 Locomotive #1309 takes a coal drag west, around Helmstetter's Curve (MP 171.0) on the Western Maryland Connellsville Sub-Division. The massive, compound, articulated Mallet had just a short, 7 year career hauling coal drags on the C&O, before being retired and eventually ending up as an outdoor, static display at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD for decades. Restored over a 7 year period from 2014 to 2021, the locomotive is now in service hauling tourists on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, based in Cumberland, MD. Although she typically carries the Western Maryland fireball herald in her new job, she was briefly repainted in the livery of her original owner for this February, 2023 photo shoot, organized by Lerro Photography. She's pictured here performing for photographers doing exactly what she was built to do.
This image provides a perspective view of a heart-shaped silhouette spotted by ESA’s Mars Express near Mars’ south pole. It comprises data gathered by ESA’s Mars Express on 8 November 2020 during orbit 21305. The ground resolution is approximately 15 m/pixel and the image is centred at about 148°E/78°S. This view was created using data from the nadir and colour channels of the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). The nadir channel is aligned perpendicular to the surface of Mars, as if looking straight down at the surface. HRSC stereo imaging was then used to derive the digital elevation model (DTM) upon which this oblique view is based.

Padleford Riverboats provides Mississippi River Cruises leaving from Harriet Island in St. Paul, MN. We took the cruise on Saturday, with British friends who just became U.S. citizens. The trip provided a bit of history of MN for our friends as we cruised past bridges, caves and Ft. Snelling with a narrated tour. We took the fall color tour on the Party Barge...The Betsey Northrup.
I spotted these on a walk I took today. This variety of rose, EDEN, is a wonderful climber. I have it in my own garden because it provides so many beautiful blooms.
nature provides stunning details. details that present themselves only when i slow down. when i create space—even in my own backyard—to pause, breathe, and notice. in the quiet and beautiful stillness, ordinary becomes extraordinary.
This same Mushroom has appeared in photographs immediately before these on Flickr. These two images have a link below to Selva Pascuala a prehistoric archaeological site in Spain that has fungoid rock art on the cave walls. This Mushroom on Wallace’s Cave in Scotland in not prehistoric, nor of the psychotropic variety proposed depicted in Spain. One rather base link might be the growing medium. Is the breath of visitors enough to provide the material on the cave to support growth of such a large mushroom? There are prehistoric carvings near The Wallace Cave and it has me wondering on modern and ancient fungiculture that relies on a substrate to feed the growth. Maybe cave paintings display the nomadic seasonal hunt and the potential to cultivate from wild beast and wild growths through tended patches a harvest off the right animal dung that would host the correct fungi?
It seems very likely that hunter gatherers would see growths on dung and degenerating wood and see the potential for collecting the correct medium to continue mycelium and such root like structures to have harvestable growths close to hand. The current Mushroom as seen in the photographs I do not propose as a Prehistoric continuation. I just think of past and contemporary cave users providing breath and other fungi food and maybe here in Wallace’s Cave that hosts a renewed and redressed bed of rushes that someone may also be tending this wonderful growth rooted upon fertile medium in a crack in the cave. The white budding fungi spheroids seem to show a near water fall of growth in the well shaded semi dark of the small cave.
Much less visited than Rosslyn Chapel on the opposite Western Bank of The North Esk river you will find The Wallace Cave. There are several Wallace Caves in Scotland. There is only one Wallace Cave in Roslin Glen. There are also caves under Hawthornden Castle. If you are going to Rosslyn Chapel I hope that you have a great visit and if you have a chance do walk in the Roslin Glen. The Castle and the Chapel retain the older name of Rosslyn and the contemporary village has the newer name of Roslin.
In the pictures uploaded to Flickr immediately before these two those two both the Focused and Focusless Fabulous Fungi a Miraculous Magical Mushroom were a joint effort. I managed in Manual Focus to capture an impressionistic rendering and a photographic view of the same rather large mushroom. My lighting expert is not on Flickr so I cannot link them locally and I do not have permission to link them further afield. He is a great companion to share a historically important cave with. Our focus on photography led us to moths and small gnats and large spiders with varying fungi and moss and lichen. The clean air just 8 miles from Edinburgh enables some fantastic growths that increase in quantity and size as you move further away from the city into more vibrant landscapes that support such greater growth. The size and vitality of the Mushroom was so unexpected that I have labelled it fabulous, miraculous and magical as it certainly appeared that way being the only such branching out extended growth from the rock face with roots nestled in a shallow crack.
The cave shows many pick marks from it having being extended and masoned sections where door and fittings have been fitted and broken away. The valley side opposite Rosslyn Chapel and Castle has a path way and viewing platforms cut into the cliff sides. The cave itself is not too large and the Mushroom as focus of attention and camera here looks quite unlikely to be natural and also at the same time possible so. It does appear like something brought in affixed and maybe even tended. There is a bed of rushes in the cave, changed annually and often dressed into the form of a sleeping figure. This Both Focused and Focusless Fabulous Fungi a Miraculous Magical Mushroom that proudly proclaims itself present and potent whilst discreetly declining any casual further investigation beyond speculation such as I have delivered here.
There is a legend of a Black Hen, don’t say Pullet, that is noted as confusing treasure seekers and grail hunters by digging holes to false terrain the site and to fill in half dug holes for when seekers return to complete their excavations and further still through special skill to carefully indicate the better and best grounds to explore through careful talon and beak soil manipulation. There are further tails of either this Black Hen, or of another such similar still don’t say Pullet, Black Hen, maybe there is just the one, or possibly there are a pair of magical soil shrouders at work? The other hen story relates to a treasure hidden under a stair. The exact stair can be correctly deduced in a manner not fully revealed within the story. Any stair testing and excavating can and will lead to the Black Hen II, this time the truth will not out*, moving the treasure when the excavators are in the right area and also the hen will bamboozle the grail hunters with special Holy Hen Acts that will confuse, strain, enrage and bring chaos to order and the ‘BH II’ wonder guard will clear up after the said chaos and restore all to proper order til the right, maybe even righteous, approach of the mythic legendary treasure grail hunter seekers who are destined to step on the right step at the right time in the right manner possibly with the left foot.
Please only read good humour and faithful following in my words above. I have followed signs to Rosslyn Chapel and parked when there were just a few spaces next to the old barn and byre. I have wandered in the beauty of the landscape and listened to the stories and here share some quickly to say that this is a place of beauty and of mystery, both of folly and of faith with a river bend bringing out rock inscribed from thousands of years ago to natural and extended caves, with castles and chapels, formerly and currently hosting services and battles til a part of the past seems to have been deeply woven here such that we choose to look at it again and again making pilgrimage and enacting rampage all engaged through marvellous mysteries and eldritch histories far beyond our fascination and into our fine fashioned fulgent fabricated fantasies.**
*Black Hen I also assured that the truth would not out, Black Hen II is not a fully fledged sequel as of course it could be one Hen, not a Pullet, successfully stealth working both grounds and stairs.
**Please do not test the Hen, or Hens, not Pullets, as you could be destroying a beautiful and historial protected place that is best left none Hen tested and none destroyed. Age, atmosphere and our antecedents have done more than enough destruction and also they had with them those that fought to give enough preservation and conservation too.
