I made this image today. My friend, Kathleen, asked if I'd make her a Facebook timeline using the image and include the Proverbs 31:25 verse. Since Kathleen is practically like a "daughter" I had no problem making the timeline for her. She chose the verse because she thought it fit her upcoming Autumn wedding theme (her wedding is October 2015).

God says what He means.

When He says that He will forgive your sin if you repent and allow Jesus to pay the penalty for those sins, He means it.

When He says that if you die with unforgiven sin you'll spend eternity separated from Him and all that is good, He means it.

Don't think God is like a human who changes His mind or gives in to pleading or whining. He isn't. He won't give you a reward just for participating. There are requirements for entering heaven.

God has told us all His rules because He isn't going to break them. If He did, then He wouldn't be trustworthy.

It's best to believe Him.

My first genuine Artifact puzzle, courtesy of eBay. A grid cut so although it's described on their website as 'harder than average' it was extremely easy to complete. I got it at a bargain price due to its having a damaged piece but it didn't detract from the overall image. I coloured it before packing it away but it's still visible.

Two enclosed leaflets explain all the proverbs in English and German.

Would I buy more? Probably not, unless I can acquire one with a more imaginative cut, although I was pleased with the build quality and presentation of this one.

"Proverbs for Paranoids 1. You may never get to touch the master, but you can tickle his creatures."

Been Reading gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon and I feel inspired to draw it so I can see it. It is a dense, difficult, weird, at times disjointed, disturbing, repulsive, fascinating, technical, winding, encompassing, challenging, thrilling, insightful, wonderful ...and many more adjectives are needed to describe the scope of this book. I read to stimulate my brain to draw...and the more difficult and obscure the subject matter the more I like the challenge of trying to interpret it.

As I was reading I felt a cartoony look to represent the "Proverbs for Paranoids"

Proverbs 7:1-27 (NLT)

Follow my advice, my son; always treasure my commands.

Obey them and live! Guard my teachings as your most precious possession.

Tie them on your fingers as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.

Love wisdom like a sister; make insight a beloved member of your family.

Let them hold you back from an affair with an immoral woman,

from listening to the flattery of an adulterous woman.

I was looking out the window of my house one day

and saw a simpleminded young man who lacked common sense.

He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman.

He was strolling down the path by her house at twilight,

as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in.

The woman approached him, dressed seductively and sly of heart.

She was the brash, rebellious type who never stays at home.

She is often seen in the streets and markets, soliciting at every corner.

She threw her arms around him and kissed him, and with a brazen look she said,

"I've offered my sacrifices and just finished my vows.

It's you I was looking for! I came out to find you, and here you are!

My bed is spread with coloured sheets of finest linen imported from Egypt.

I've perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

Come, let's drink our fill of love until morning.

Let's enjoy each other's caresses, for my husband is not home.

He's away on a long trip. He has taken a wallet full of money with him,

and he won't return until later in the month."

So she seduced him with her pretty speech.

With her flattery she enticed him.

He followed her at once, like an ox going to the slaughter or like a trapped stag,

awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart.

He was like a bird flying into a snare, little knowing it would cost him his life.

Listen to me, my sons, and pay attention to my words.

Don't let your hearts stray away toward her.

Don't wander down her wayward path.

For she has been the ruin of many;

numerous men have been her victims.

Her house is the road to the grave.

Her bedroom is the den of death.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Verse 9 of this chapter sets the scene at twilight.

LIGHTING NOTES:

Unspecific - candle or torch light from above & the sides of the scene.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

A simpleminded young man who lacked common sense & an immoral woman, or adulteress.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

As in the previous scene: notice also that the woman has Delphinium (Violet Larkspur) on her pillow. All parts of the plant contain the alkaloid delphinidin which is highly toxic. If ingested in large quantities this toxin causes death. The flowers look pretty & attractive on the outside, but are poisonous & deadly on the inside. That is a flower metaphor for the adulterous woman, who’s attentions bring potential death to the young man.

As verse 27 states: ‘Her house is the road to the grave. Her bedroom is the den of death.’ I wanted to show the true nature of the danger the simpleminded young man is in. We see this scene with “spiritual eyes” & it becomes visible: the woman is death, represented by her skull head. Her bedroom is the den of death: the bedposts are transformed into bat-winged, skull heads; the flowing drapes are now transformed into curling, intense flames of hell. Notice that they are curling around the young man, ready to destroy him.

My healed white ink tattoo. This was taken about 1 month after it was done.

Be a generous person… generous with your love, kindness, forgiveness, hope, resources, giving, compassion, help, and grace… with your good ideas, gifts, skills, and talents, sincere compliments and encouragement to others. Don't be stingy or guarded with what you have to give. No more living small lives… live freely and generously!

Proverbs 23:6-8

"Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies, for he is like one who is inwardly calculating. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you. You will vomit up the morsels that you have eaten, and waste your pleasant words."

Maybe not the most exciting shot but I wanted to discuss this passage in detail.

Quite often the alternative translation of this verse is used to support the idea that the Bible promotes positive thinking. Sometimes people will quote, "As a man thinks within himself, so he is".

I have major problems with taking that approach to interpreting this verse. You can't just take a verse out of context to support your own ideas. Reading this verse in the context of the surrounding passage reveals the true meaning of the phrase and it is not the power of positive thinking. The verse is talking about a stingy man who gives the outward appearance of being generous but inside he is begrudgingly feeding the guest.
