Shane Bardiau & SNB Recording Studio
Here we go yet again, another roommate, another great friend...
I met Shane a few years back at GC Camp and we immediately fell in love... Well not really love but Shane has truly become one of my best friends. He's funny because he's a super talented dude and he's really humble about it. He kills it on a snowboard and anything on two wheels: Fixed Gear, Skateboard, and Razor Scooters. O and shane is pretty good looking too... Sorry ladies, he's taken.
One of his biggest passions is music and the art of sound. Shane studied audio engineering in college and he has a recording studio in the basement of our house. It's really legit actually! If you need anything recorded or are looking to be the next Justin Bieber, Shane is more then capable of recording and producing your album. So come on in to SNB Recording Studio and Shane will hook it up! email him here shane_bardiau@msn.com He also has his own website. Check it out here.
For the photo of Shane I really wanted to get him working and recording in action. Because of the low light in the Control Room I thought it would be awesome to capture him dialing in a track with a long exposure. The second shot is just a plain an simple shot of Shane's beautiful mug enjoying a track while talking to me.

When you're scratch-building layout sounds, you need a different sort of workbench. Here's the one used by Jim Wells of Fantasonics.
The audio editor is the scale sound modeling workbench. At the center are the tools - a computer, audio editing software, and reference monitors (in this case, a Macbook Pro, ProTools, and 2.0 and 2.1 JBL reference monitors). Inside the crate & barrel mixing desk are various ancillary items like inputs/outputs, rack gear, and terrabyte HD's.
Jim Wells from Fantasonics is our guest on Episode 37.

From 1987 to 1992 I made about one hundred recordings on an inexpensive Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. This is part of the archive of those recordings. Most of the tapes are 90 minutes each, all full. During that Ime I also periodically released cassettes under the name "therefore." In mid 1992 I upgraded to a first generation ADAT digital recorder and then a few years later to a ProTools system.

Picked these up on Friday afternoon, so now I have three more records that I'll listen to incessantly when I'm editing photos - I don't like being too distracted when I'm editing, and these are good background records, although the Charley Pride one is a good listening album, too.
The Charley Pride record is one I've been looking for for a while - ever since I bought the eight-track with a case of other eight-tracks, when I bought my eight-track player. (I couldn't fit "eight-track" one more time into that sentence.) For some reason, I picked *that* eight-track to listen to, out of all of them, and it put me in a weird kind of trance. It's not like I was blown away by it - instead, it lulled me, and lurked in the background, doing its thing, while I did whatever I was doing on the computer. Eventually, when my concentration shifted more to the music than what I was doing, I discovered that its actually a pretty good album - there's damn good songs like "I'll Be Leaving Alone" and "The Rose is for Today", and a slew of other interesting tracks. It is what it is - '70s soft-Nashville country. Waylon Jennings rebelled against this, but even the scene he left behind had some good performers. Charley Pride is one of them.
After listening to the eight-track loop around fifty-odd times, I really wanted a copy on vinyl. The eight-track sounded muddled, and I imagined that the eight-track had been worn out in some '78 Ford LTD, and the vinyl must sound GLORIOUS. Finding this record was another story, though. You would think that an album that hit #6 on the country charts and had *three* top ten singles on it would be pretty common, right? Wrong! I looked for this thing far and wide - in thrift shops, record stores, online - for over a year. Every time I would hit a knot of Charley Pride records in the budget section of Sound Exchange, the adrenaline would start pumping - until I passed through it, with no sign of this record. Arrghh! But Friday, Jeremy was being a trooper, going through the ratty vinyl at Salvation Army while I looked at the cameras. "Shane! Isn't this that record you've been looking for?" Indeed it was! Props to Jeremy for finding it.
It's in listenable condition - you can't expect much for $1. And the vinyl is really thin - probably why not too many copies survived. This is the South, after all.
Anyway, I got it home on Friday night and stuck it on - and realized that I was just listening to the eight-track on vinyl, with some crackle added. It actually SOUNDS muddled - that's the way it was recorded/engineered/mastered. You could copy the master tape to a gold CD and play it through sixteen Bose Wave systems hooked together in an anechoic chamber and it'd still sound the same. Perhaps I'll find a really clean copy and re-master it on ProTools one day.
The Matt Monro one (on the left) was also a good Salvation Army find, in what I would call a VG+ condition. Matt Monro is awesome - people call him the English Frank Sinatra, but he's different than Frank. It helps that one of my favorite songs of his leads this album off - "Walk Away" - and that side 2 also starts off with his great recording of "Softly as I Leave You". The rest of the songs are swingin', too, with the odd ballad thrown in. Matt Monro LPs are pretty rare - this is only the second I've ever seen. He was way more popular in England than in the States.
I found the Bert Kaempfert/Max Greger record at Sound Exchange. I'd never heard Bert Kaempfert before, even though I know he was the first guy to really record the Beatles (in 1961). Plus, the artwork is awesome, and it's an English record - the sleeve is all laminated and thin, plus the vinyl is crazy thick. I love European pressings. Anyway, it's fairly good stuff. Lots of accordion. At the end is a surprise - an instrumental version of Phil Spector's "To Know Him is To Love Him", with saxophones. Genius!
I'll be spinning these for weeks, probably.
