The diamond of Serifos is its capital, Chora, which is considered to be a model of a medieval castled settlement, built amphitheatrically on the rocky height of the bay of Livadi , in order to protect it from the pirate invasions.
Listening to Carole King today… another old Rocker that’s made beautiful music for a number of years.
Carole King is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who has been active since 1958. King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years.
Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter.

The Hooded Merganser:
Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )
Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.
The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

In 1967, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park. Formed within a volcanic cone, today Hanauma Bay offers a pristine marine ecosystem after the City and County of Honolulu laid out a plan in 1990 to restore the bay, after years of use from the millions of visitors who visit and love to snorkel Hanauma Bay. Voted Best Beach in the United States in 2016, volunteers have a booth located on the beach level to help visitors learn about conservation of the reef and the types of fish that live there.
In 2002 a marine education center was opened for visitors and part of the conservation plan requires first-time visitors to watch a 9 minute video before entering the park so they can learn about the marine life, preservation and safety rules for the park.
These cygnets were sitting very close to the footpath as I walked past.

Sempervivum tectorum, the common houseleek, is a species of flowering plant in the family Crassulaceae, native to the mountains of southern Europe, cultivated in the whole of Europe for its appearance and a Roman tradition claiming that it protects buildings against lightning strikes.
The name Sempervivum has its origin in the Latin semper ('always') and vivus ('living'), because this perennial plant keeps its leaves in winter and is very resistant to difficult conditions of growth.
The specific epithet tectorum means 'of house roofs', referring to a traditional location for these plants.
The hairs that fringe the leaves can be seen on close inspection.

Hello There!
I managed to get out a few days ago for a short bit! Wouldn't you know, the north winds started up just after I started my walk! I spotted a few small birds, most were in dense bushes near ground level, or like this chickadee, staying close to larger branches using them as a windbreak. Despite the cold, it was really nice to be out for awhile!
