I've been working all day on a couple of projects:

-the final project for my design class (due tomorrow) which, due to a stupid bright idea required drawing a lot of origami (never again! it is so hard to get all the lines and folds and angles to look right!),

-the big project I've been teasing about (hopefully unveiled tomorrow late night),

-and an application to work for the Obama campaign (I had four people proofread my application materials and still managed to turn it in with a typo. I always find a way.)

I gave myself a break from my work and watched the movie Interview. Highly recommended. My head is still spinning. I don't think I've ever before been so enthralled by straight dialog that I've literally leaned forward in my seat.

Only two weeks left of my 365.

Not sure what I'm going to do when it's over.....it's become a diary for me, and I really like the outlet, and the visual history. So I don't want to stop. But I also don't want to be a slave to the camera and computer for the rest of my life.

I was thinking about doing a Visual Diary project (maybe create a flickr group - interest??) that basically requires me to do and share something artistic every day, but not necessarily limited to a self portrait.

Maybe?

PS - And don't forget to check out Xelia and I's print shop. You give us money. We give you prints. I get to see her. You get to see more cute pictures!

This inspiring story tells how Joseph, the only child of a black slave and her white master, becomes “the most accomplished man in Europe.” After traveling from his native West Indies to study music in Paris, young Joseph is taunted about his skin color. Despite his classmates’ cruel words, he continues to devote himself to his violin, eventually becoming conductor of a whole orchestra. Joseph begins composing his own operas, which everyone acknowledges to be magnifique. But will he ever reach his dream of performing for the king and queen of France? Read more about pretzels that aren't (necessarily) pretzel shaped.

'Pala master' is a pretty untranslatable pair of Brazilian Portuguese slangs put together. 'Epic freak-out' was the closest I could get to capturing the spirit.

Thanx to Matt Seneca for proofreading the English version.

All the em-dashes have been converted into question marks! (see notes) I guess this doesn't just happen on the web!

My hypothesis: this text was sent over e-mail, then copied, pasted, printed, and installed, without a final proofread.

The problem is, em-dashes aren't universally supported characters. At least there weren't any smart quotes in the copy!

Here is a sneek peak for part 4 of TBONTB...IL. I didn't want to spoil it for you so I blacked out the person who Erlina is talking to.

Finished with all pictures and writing for To Be, or Not To Be... In Love, now I just have to get the proofreading done by this week so I can upload part 4 by next week before I leave to Florida.

The reason Douglas Coupland is one of my all-time favourite writers, is that he manages to tell a story about ordinary people, in the most interesting way possible.

The Gum Thief centers around a group of Staples employees and people connected to them. These people are not microserfs. Not women surviving a plane crash, not tech loving metro-sexual shampoo fanatics. Nope. These are Staples employees. They could be selling paperclips to you.

These people are individuals some would consider to be average, boring perhaps. Uninteresting. But when Coupland writes about these people, he touches on something. Perhaps the familiarity. These people, they could be you. They could be me.

The main character here is Roger Thorpe, who is frustrated with his downward spiraling life. A divorced alcoholic and the oldest employee at his branch of Staples, Roger could be said to be suffering from a pretty bad case of a midlife crisis. To make matters worse, Roger's an aspiring and as of yet unsuccessful novelist. The stress that comes with that is just the icing on the cake.

To get through his work days, he keeps a journal about his younger Goth coworker Bethany, mocking her in a way by writing (with freakish accuracy) his own version of Bethany's thoughts and emotions. When Bethany discovers the journal, she's pissed but also intrigued - this guy knows her, somehow - and proceeds to respond to Roger in his journal.

And thus begins the communication between Roger and Bethany (and others at times), for which one rule applies: in 'real life', they don't speak or as much as look at each other. That is the deal.

The Gum Thief reads like an interconnected group web log. It's wonderful to see these two people who (seemingly) have nothing in common, except their dissatisfaction with their jobs, get to know one and other intimately. They are completely frank and open with each other and there's something very disarming about it. (Even though you can't help but know that not having to look each other in the face helps with the openness.) I love that us readers get a look into their lives this way. It's kind of like reality tv, or maybe a written version of The Office. There's a charm to its normalcy.

This is the Coupland I love, and have missed a little.

The Gum Thief is a very human book, mature and uplifting without being unrealistic. There's no overkill on happy moments or blissful endings for all. Figuring things out isn't done instantly, let alone coped with immediately. It's a process. People will continue to make mistakes, and they need to in order to recognize the effect their choices have on their lives and the lives of others.

Another noteworthy aspect to The Gum Thief is that Roger's novel Glove Pond is included in the novel (ohhh meta-fiction!); the novel-in-novel created by Roger (and proofread, commented on, by Bethany) parallels Roger's world and helps him to discover things about himself, and to overcome certain obstacles.

Roger's voice sounds so realistic, like there really is a Roger out there somewhere. You know what, of course there are. And I'm rooting for all of them.

THE UNITED NATIONS: One of The Enemies Within

AN ESSAY ABOUT THE UNITED NATIONS, CAPITALISM, SOCIALISM, COMMUNISM, RECLAIMING OUR NATIONAL UNITY AND HOW THE RETURNING VETERANS OF THE MIDDLE EAST WILL BECOME THE NEW HOPE FOR A UNITED STATES OF PROSPERITY AND CAPITALISM...

by Robert L. Huffstutter

It is kind of like ancient history in that Rome paid tribute to the Huns for a long period of time and all the while the Huns demanded more and more.

If there are those that have not read about the decline of the once great Roman Empire, let me recommend it as reading that will help explain the concern of many United States citizens.

Personally, I view the United Nations as one of the enemies within. Back when the United Nations began, it was a great and wonderful organization, a kind of hope for world peace.

Throughout the years, we have seen it change. I have noticed that in the interest of today's trend in political correctness that has, in my opinion, driven more than a few good women and men totally insane and ruined thought processes that could have added great contributions to the world as a whole, keeping in perspective the reality of boundaries, economics, immigration policies and the prosecution of war criminals. I have seen the love the world had for America turn into a vile hatred due to the propaganda spread by ever-increasing new and strange member nations that held great grudges against the United States and other like nations.

There was room in the United Nations for all nations, but once the issue of religion entered into the hallowed auditoriums of the United Nations, it was, to quote an oft-mispronounced idiom "...all she wrote." Oh, there was no problem with religion as long as it was not associated with Christianity. I have no bones to pick with other religions; I rather admire the Bhuddists, their gentle nature is admirable.

In my opinion, the issues of importance in the United Nations should have remained focused on world hunger, world habitat, world conservation and various earth-be-saved programs. Now, however, the United Nations has started talks about criticism of religion. I do not think Scientology is an issue for the United Nations. If my cousin in Miami wants to write a column about the violence perpetuated by a numerically-focused group of unidentifiable Scientologists, I believe she should have that right. To get to my point immediately, the United Nations is not and should never be used as a forum for discussing ANY type of religious beliefs and I will include ALL OF THE RELIGIONS ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET. If we are going to address religion in the United Nations, the United Nations should be moved immediately to another nation and the United State should resign. Religion and government in the United States is seperate; so should it be in the United Nations.

Without the United States, where would the U.N. relocate and where would they collect their funds? The more this nation and its leaders pay tribute to the United Nations, the sooner this nation will suffer a collapse that will only be prevented by a complete change of voting habits of this populace. Many of those who have been in Washington for more than two terms have forgotten they are United States citizens and feel like they are beyond reproach involving their initial purpose of representing their people back home; many have lost touch with their constituents and are, in many respects, their own unique and sovereign nation with their own medical care, their own retirement plans, and their own government supplied autos and offices with their own an personal "official" budgets supplied by both their states and the Federal Government. They are the ELITE, like the elite in the nations that have covertly removed democracy and capitalism, replacing them with socialism, the first step, as history proves, to the adoption of communism.

Shame on our Senators and Representatives who are no longer representing their constituents but representing and supporting each other, making alliances that are all too often personal and financially influenced to add wealth to their own accounts. If there is a spread the wealth mentatlity here, it is spreading the wealth within their own elite society.

Many in the government today have not spent one day in the military, a sad fact because unless one serves in the military it is almost impossible to understand how military minds work when it comes to serving for one purpose and one purpose only, the preservation of freedom for all, especially the home folks, the people back home in the seperate states, the boundaried domains of republics that are a homeland within a Homeland.

The last successful collection of homelands within a Homeland that were socialist republics with a "united" that was not a name but an afterthought was the USSR and as we all know, they went bankrupt, closed, went out of business. There are those in America today who have lost faith in private enterprise, but not so much "private enterprise" but Capitalism. No, these people are not the enemies within, they are not the enemies of the state, they are but confused men and women who have confused economic thoughts, men and women who have no real knowledge of American history, men and women who have looked upon Sweden and Norway, a blue-eyed and blonde-haired bunch with what seems a perfect socialist system, albeit that their taxes are the highest in the world, they have the best healthcare programs. How ironic that long after the fall of blonde-haired and blue-eyed Colonialism, third world personalities admire another Anglo scheme that has yet to be completely revealed. We had best stick to what the forefathers had in mind for American economics. Capitalism won't work?

It worked a lot longer than any socialism that I can recall. My God, I hope we continue to thrive and succeed as a nation that is a Capitalistic nation and do not fall victim to yet another blonde-haired and blue-eyed concoction like Scandanavian Socialism. I chose the Scandanavian brand of socialism rather than the socialism of the third world nations because there are so many more wide-screen televisions and Volvos in the Scandanavian brand. Confused? Do not be. Let us make certain, however, that the next President is an avowed Capitalist. But what do we do about all of the career Senators and Representatives, so many of them with snowy hair, an indication of retirement age? What do we do with them? We have no gulags in America, thankfully. It is time to send these stately gentlemen, white and black, back home to where they began, back home to become reacquainted with their homelands in the winter of their lives.

IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE WE HAVE A NEW GENERATION OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE SERVED HONORABLY IN THE MILITARY, much like the men and women who served America in World War Two and Korea, a generation that helped America remain great and prosperous. Hopefully, these post war vets of the Middle East will want to serve in government. Let us not give up hope, thousand upon thousand of military veterans will once again serve the states and this nation and we shall be vigilant in a united effort once again.

Proofreading is always good.

bit.ly/v3AElEEnglish may not seem like the most marketable major, but in today’s fast-changing employment market, when job titles and responsibilities are constantly shifting, English majors do actually have one key advantage. As part of their training, graduates with an English degree have learned to perform critical analysis then clearly and effectively communicate the results of their observations. These broadly-applicable skills make English students effective problem-solvers. As a result, English majors are found in many fields such as program management, marketing, medicine, social work, government jobs, non-profit organizations, and financial services. However, the most popular career choices for graduates with an English degree are still in the traditional writing, editing and public relations fields. Writers and authors with an English degree create original written materials for a wide range of online and offline publications including books, magazines, trade journals, company newsletters, and advertisements. In general, writers tend to specialize in certain types of writing such as novels, plays, biographies, and textbooks. Other types of writers include news analysts, reporters and correspondents who work in the newspaper or magazine publishing industry. And songwriters, screenwriters, and scriptwriters create scripts for radio, television, films, plays, and other types of performances. Copy writers use their writing skills to create advertisements for publications or broadcasting. Usually they also work with a client to produce advertising themes or slogans and they may go beyond writing and become involved in the marketing of products and services. Editors are primarily responsible for reviewing, rewriting, and editing the work of writers, though editors may also create original written content. The most common editorial duties include deciding on the content of books, journals, magazines, and other publications as well as reviewing story ideas proposed by other staff. Once a book or other written draft has been prepared, editors review and edit the draft, offer comments to improve the work, and suggest possible titles. In addition, editors often oversee the publication process for a book or other printed material. And editors who work in the book publishing industry review proposals for books and decide whether to buy an author's publication rights. Types of editors include executive and managing editors who typically plan budgets and hire writers, reporters, and other employees. Copy editors review written materials for errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling and suggest revisions to improve clarity or accuracy. They may also carry out research and verify facts, dates, and statistics. Finally, copy editors often do page layouts, compose headlines, and prepare written materials for printing. Editors at any level may be aided by Publication Assistants with an English degree who read and evaluate manuscripts, do proofreading, and even compile their own original articles using information from wire services or the Internet. Public relations specialists are communications specialists and media specialists, whose job is to help businesses, nonprofit associations, universities, hospitals, and other organizations to build and maintain positive relationships with the public. Public relations specialists usually oversee media, community, consumer, industry, and governmental relations. They may work on political campaigns, represent special-interest groups, mediate conflict resolution, and assist with a company's employee and investor relations. Public relations specialists write and distribute press releases which then end up on the internet and in printed or broadcast media as special reports, newspaper stories, and magazine articles. Public relations specialists also arrange opportunities to facilitate positive interactions between their clients and the public, such as scheduling speaking engagements and preparing speeches for officials of the companies that they represent. Finally, public relations specialists often represent their clients at community projects and meetings, make film, slide, and other visual presentations for meetings and school assemblies, and plan regional or national conventions for trade organizations and professional groups.

In practice, editors are actually discouraged from marking up corrections in red. Apparently, annotation in red surfaces uncomfortable associations with "marking".

You sit down at this chair, type some lines of text and the Intertype clickitty-clacks and whirs away, finding the master for each character you've input, puts it in its place in line, squirts molten lead into these tiny master-molds and in a few seconds you've got solid lead lines of type, ready for the press. While you proofread the freshly cast block of type, you can hear the tiny metal master characters being sent back to their original locations. This is all done mechnically. Newspapers and books were typeset this way into the 60s and 70s. Totally amazing, and actually makes modern digital printers look lowtech.

TITFT a day or so early :)

I served more than 10 years before I got my tattoo. Here are two stories which explain why I was so careful.

Anchors Inboard:

The Eagle, Globe and Anchor (EGA) is our emblem and Marines plaster it everywhere. It's an important part of the uniform and there are two collar emblems on the Dress Blue Uniform. See here: www.flickr.com/photos/clippermonsoon/388847895/in/set-721...

The collar emblems are not identical because the anchors must always "face inboard" or towards the center. Marines getting the EGA on their arms get them with the anchor facing inboard.

A guy from my platoon tried to explain that to the tattoo artist. The EGA in the book had the anchor going to the right, but he wanted it going left. No problem, said the tattoo guy, I can flip it.

So this Marine comes back with the tattoo and as expected he's showing his EGA to all of us for the next few days. About the third day after he'd gotten it, another platoon member noticed something, sure the anchor was going in the right direction, but on the globe, Florida was now in the Pacific Ocean. The tattoo guy had flipped a transparency and copied it identically, including the now transposed east and west coasts of the map on the globe.

The Meat Tag:

Another Marine I know (Sgt O,) the guy in the Dress Blue uniform link above, got a tattoo known as a "meat tag." It's a copy of one's dogtag information: name, serial (social security) number, blood type, gas mask size, religion, and "USMC" and it's tattooed on one's torso, a few inches below the armpit.

The reasoning behind the meat tag is somewhat morbid. It supposes that if you got your head blown off and your dogtags with it, your body could still be identified and sent home to Mom. Some Marines today would say DNA identification would render that obsolete. I say it's always been obsolete because the Marine Corps made us mark every article of clothing with a name stamp or name tape.

Anyway, the tattoo "artist" who did Sgt O's meat tag got his social security number wrong by one digit. I guess he could research that SSN number to find out where his torso will end up.

Always have your tattoo artist draw it on paper first. Proofread it like it's a...well, tattoo.

I've been looking for demolition painters for years! Finally found some.

On the other half of the L-shaped desk is the laser printer, a deeper conference table for editing and proofreading (and all my reference books at hand for that work), and my various writing awards on the wall.

Oh, and the autographed Weird Al Yankovic promo poster. Naturally.

Note the Neo on the desk. Yes, even with a high-powered computer two feet away to my left, I have been known to turn a quarter turn to the right and use the Neo instead. That's saying something.

Guinea pig cage with Ajax and Murray is just to the right of this half of the desk.

WM. CUNNINGHAM DEAD.

______

END OF A LONG AND USEFUL

CAREER OF HONORED CITIZEN.

______

Well Known to Many in the State---Funeral

Will be Held at Presbyterian

Church Saturday.

______

Thursday morning the sad news was passed from lip to lip that an old and esteemed citizen, William Cunningham, was dead, and it was a great shock to his friends and to the city in general, because, although he had been suffering for years with asthma, yet he had been attending to business the day before he died, and while many have expected him to pass away suddenly, yet the shock was none the less severe.

Mr. Cunningham occupied a room by himself, and it is supposed he passed away while suffering with a worse attack of asthma than usual. He was found in the morning.

William Cunningham was born in Alleghaney county, Pa., Feb. 26, 1837. The family moved to Beaver county the following year, and when he was old enough he entered Beaver Academy for two years, afterwards teaching in the public schools. He graduated from the Iron City Commercial College, of Pittsburg, and was proofreader and mailing clerk on the Presbyterian Banner and Advocate for two years. He attended the Western University of Pennsylvania two years, and then taught school in Pittsburg until the outbreak of the Rebellion.

In 1862 he enlisted in Battery G, Pennsylvania Artillery, and served through the war, and was discharged at Harrisburg in June, 1865. After the war he again taught school in Pittsburg, until his health failed when he acted as traveling salesman for the publishing house of Sheldon & Company, of New York, having his headquarters at St. Louis. He followed this business for two years. In 1871 he came to Humboldt and was employed by Col. S. H. Stevens as head man in his lumber business, where he remained two years, and then went to Kalida, the then county seat of Woodson county, and engaged in mercantile business. Afterwards he taught school in Woodson county and then engaged in farming, until the Citizens Lumber Co. of Humboldt, was organized when he was installed as manager of that concern. In 1880 he engaged in the mercantile business under the firm Neal & Cunningham, and continued in this business until elected county treasurer of Allen county, which office he held for four years, and then engaged in the lumber business under the firm name of Cunningham & Son, and they were succeeded by the Hurley Lumber Co.

In April 1871, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Etta A. Phelps, of Windsor, Mo. Their only child is A. W. Cunningham of this city, editor of the Humboldt Herald.

During Mr. Cunningham’s business career in our city and county, he has ever been actuated by the highest principles of honesty and integrity, and was ever wide-awake for the best interests of the town and community. His friends will miss him greatly as he has been a central figure in our community for many years, and they will extend deepest sympathy to the bereaved wife, son and other relatives in this sad and sudden affliction.

The funeral services of Mr. Cunningham will be held at the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8th, at 2:30. Friends wishing to see him will please call at the home Saturday morning from 10 o’clock to 1.

WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM.

WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM, ex-treasurer of Allen county, whose business engagements in these parts have spanned the period of a third of a century, was born on a farm in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, February 26, 1837. His father moved to Beaver county the next year, and from the common schools of the county William entered Beaver Academy, spending two years there and the succeeding year doing his first work as a teacher in the public schools. He graduated from the Iron City Commercial College, of Pittsburg, and filled the position of proof-reader and mailing clerk on the Presbyterian Banner and Advocate for two years. In this latter capacity he earned the funds which defrayed his expenses at the Western University of Pennsylvania two years, at the conclusion of which period he engaged in teaching school in Pittsburg. Pennsylvania, following it till the outbreak of the Rebellion.

In 1862 Mr. Cunningham enlisted in Battery G, Pennsylvania Artillery, served through the war and was discharged at Harrisburg in June, 1865. On returning to civil pursuits he took up work where he left off—in the Pittsburg public schools. In a few months he was elected principal of what is now the 23rd ward school of that city and was in that position when failing health forced his retirement from the school room. Travel seemed one thing which promised the restoration of his health and he secured the general agency for the publishing house of Sheldon & Company, of New York, with headquarters at St. Louis, Missouri. He passed the two years following in the business, traveling over Missouri and Kansas, introducing their school books into the public schools, and while at Sedalia, Missouri, met a very engaging schoolma'm who afterward became his wife.

February 15, 1871, our subject came to Allen county and stopped in Humboldt. The general bustle of business and the apparent thrift of the little city attracted him and he was at once possessed of serious intention of locating there. He made the acquaintance of Colonel S. H. Stevens then in the lumber business and at noon of the same day was installed as the latter's chief clerk and salesman. He remained in this business two years and, upon retiring went to the new county seat of Woodson county, Kalida, and engaged in mercantile pursuits. Grasshoppers destroyed not only the crops of the season following but destroyed Mr. Cunningham's prospects, as well, and he traded his goods for cattle and that winter spent his time profitably by teaching a country school in Woodson county. The following spring he became a full-fledged farmer and remained such until the new Citizens Lumber Company, of Humboldt, chose him to manage their yard there. When this company was absorbed by S. A. Brown in after years the subject hereof engaged in the grocery business in Humboldt, continuing it eight years, or until his election as County Treasurer.

Mr Cunningham has ever and always been noted for his intense Rpublicanism. His interest in things political began almost with his residence in Kansas and for many years he has been recognized as one of the active, honorable and judicious counselors of his party in local affairs. He was nominated for Treasurer of the county in 1887 and in November of that year he was elected by a large majority. He was elected two years later by a larger majority than before. His popularity as a public official grew with his service and his efficiency as such is unsurpassed. On leaving the county seat in 1896 he returned to Humboldt and was identified with the Bank of Humboldt in a clerical capacity. December 3rd of that year he opened a lumber yard in Humboldt as the successor of J. P. Johnson and Leidigh & Huston. The firm of Mr. Cunningham and son is one of the prominent enterprises of the city.

In April, 1871, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Etta A. Phelps of Windsor, Missouri. Their only child is Arthur W. Cunningham, who was married May 1, 1901, to Mary I. Blackman.

Blackman.

Author and Creator of Láadan

Arkansas

Born in Missouri in 1936, Dr. Elgin has had a distinguished career as a writer, artist, linguist, verbal self-defense trainer, grandmother, publisher of the Linguistics & Science Fiction newsletter, and founder of the Science Fiction Poetry Association. In 1980, she first came to widespread attention with her book The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. Elgin’s place in the conlanger’s pantheon, however, was assured with the creation of Láadan, appearing in her Native Tongue Trilogy: Native Tongue, The Judas Rose, and Earthsong. Láadan is a language created by women for women.** The novel is set in a future where women have been subjugated to serve only as linguists for male-dominated companies dealing with various alien races. However, being linguists, the women begin to create a language to more accurately reflect their thoughts, feelings, and desires and to free them from a male-dominated, aggressive way of expressing themselves. **[ADDENDUM: In an email from Dr. Elgin to Don Boozer, 5/11/2008: "I have just one comment, about this sentence: 'Láadan is a language created by women for women.' It's true that it's a language created by women, but not just for women. In the trilogy it's made very clear that it was intended for men as well as for women, and I have been fighting this "women-only" myth for decades now. I don't know how it got started, but I take every opportunity I get to try to get the word out that it's a myth." I would like to thank Dr. Elgin for pointing this out and wanted to share her comment with viewers of the exhibit. -- D. Boozer]

(Top right) Carsten Becker

Creator of Ayeri

Germany

21-year-old Carsten Becker, a native of Braunschweig, Germany, started conlanging after reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and being amazed by "all the Quenya in there and the detail given to it." He happened upon Mark Rosenfelder's Language Construction Kit (http://www.zompist.com/kit.html) while doing Internet searches for material on Tolkien's languages. This was in 2002, and, in December 2003, Carsten began work on his conlang Ayeri after two previous abandoned attempts known as The Nameless Language and Daléian. Carsten states that "since then, Ayeri has been gradually growing, and my ultimate goal is to make it a comfortably usable (private) language -- which I think is a common goal of many conlangers." An in-depth Ayeri Coursebook was written in 2005 by Carsten and was made available on his website in a professional-looking PDF format. It included the three separate Ayeri writing systems as well as a full grammar and dictionary. Carsten is revising the Ayeri grammar to reflect changes made in the past few years and is planning on tackling the entire Coursebook next; however, information is readily available on the web at Tay Benung: The Ayeri Resource (http://benung.freehostia.com). The site includes a grammar, dictionary, texts, information on the scripts, and even recordings in Ayeri! Tay Benung is Ayeri for "The Web."

Carsten is currently in training as a publishing assistant for Westermann, one of the biggest publishers of textbooks in Germany and known internationally for their exquisite wall maps. Studying languages or linguistics sometime after finishing his training "is still at the back of my mind," Carsten admits, "as it could also be useful for getting on with my current job." And, not to mention, continuing to expand Ayeri.

(Bottom) “This exhibit is brought to you by the international conlanging community.”

Collaborative conlang projects are common on the Internet, but a venture like the exhibit you are currently viewing is unprecedented. The scale of the undertaking and the fact that it is designed for the general public (i.e., not only for other conlangers) is unique. The project was initiated by Don Boozer who wrote all the text for the exhibit (except where otherwise quoted). Any errors, factual, grammatical, or typographical, are his. Don was uniquely qualified to present this exhibit. He was a presenter at the 2007 Language Creation Conference; has published articles on conlanging in Library Journal, The Linguist (the official journal of the British Chartered Institute of Linguists), and VOYA (a journal highlighting library services to teens); and is currently working on several conlangs of his own including Dritok (an entirely voiceless language incorporating hisses, fricatives, clicks, and hand gestures for an imaginary species with no vocal cords).

One of the goals of the exhibit was “to put a face to the craft of conlanging,” and, towards this end, Don contacted a number of prominent language creators to request photos and biographical information. These conlanging celebrities graciously responded with enthusiasm and great humility and included Doug Ball (California), Carsten Becker (Germany), Måns Björkman (Sweden), Helge Fauskanger (Norway), Suzette Haden Elgin (Arkansas), Sai Emrys (California), Anthony Harris (Vermont), Sonja Elen Kisa (Canada), Marc Okrand (DC), David J. Peterson (CA), John Quijada (CA), Mark “The Zompist” Rosenfelder (Illinois), and Andrew Smith (New Zealand).

After writing the first draft of the text for the exhibit, Don posted a message on the CONLANG listserv asking for proofreading volunteers. A few hours later, a full complement of proofreaders from around the world had taken the challenge: Terrence Donnelly (Missouri), Dr. Dirk Elzinga (Utah), Sai Emrys (California), Arnt Richard Johansen (Norway), David McCann (London, England), Michael Poxon (Norfolk, England), Larry Sulky (Canada), and Steven Lytle (Ohio). Their critiques, suggestions, and error-finding added immeasurably to the exhibit. Don thanks them all...Aweras, Kutayang vās, Hannon le, Hantanye, Áala, Pona, qatlho', Hela, Dëkuy, Greid.

It is Don Boozer’s hope that this exhibit will inspire new conlangers and allow current ones to take even more pride in their creations. You may contact him at donaldboozer@yahoo.com.

Verse 121

O Beloved whose light

Comes from behind the curtains,

Your light and warmth

Are like summer for us.

Take us to the rose garden.

Our Hearts are fiery like summer.

O salve for the eyes of my Soul,

Where did you go?

Come, come, so the water

Will spring from our oven.

Come, so the barren land will be green,

The cemeteries will become a garden,

Grapes will ripen,

And our bread will be baked.

O sun of Soul, sun of Heart,

O Beauty who shames the sun with His beauty,

Come and see how this sticky mud

Got stuck to our Soul.

We can‟t get rid of it.

The kindness of Your face

Has changed so many thorns

Into so many rose gardens

That our faith has been acknowledged

Hundreds of thousands of times.

O eternal Love, in order to deliver our Soul

Out of this dungeon to God,

How beautifully You show Your face

From behind this mold.

O our bright morning,

Make joy during the time of gloom.

Show in the evening

A bright, wonderful day.

You make pearls out of blue beads.

You scare Venus.

You make kings out of the penniless.

Good for You, our Sultan.

Where are the eyes

That can see a trace of Your dust?

Where are the ears

That hear our testament?

Where is the mind

That understands our evidence?

If the Heart sees the beauty of that sugar cane

And tells of its grace and favors,

Tate and flavor will sing songs

At the bottom of our every tooth.

The sound of drums coming from the land of Soul

Says, “Particles are reaching wholeness,

Sweet basil to sweet basil, rose to rose.

Everything is becoming free

From the jail of our thorns.”

Our kingdom for a CMS!

Experimentation was at the heart of this newspaper project. A chance for us to remind ourselves of the process of creating copy for a deadline, without the luxury of a CMS and theoretically movable deadline.

We had to meet the 2pm, Tuesday 25 January deadline with Newspaper Club in order to get these papers in the post in time for delivery on 1st February.

In the rush and as expected, some things were missed and exist here, all marked up for all to see, as a sobering memory of a legacy of print which digital, theoretically, can help us hide.

Thank you to Sarah Castleton for the mark-up.

And the The Grauniad for the solidarity.

Charles Babbage's Difference Engine, as displayed by the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. One of the docents is leaning over in front of the machine... Taken by a Nikon D610 at ISO 400 with a Nikkor 50mm ƒ 1.8 AF-D lens. Exposure is 1/25 sec @ ƒ 2.5...

The main machine (the columns) does the computing, the part at left is for engraving straight to a printing plate... (Babbage had discovered that many of the errors in the tables used at the time (1822) weren't in calculation, they were in setting the type for the table... and fatigue on the proofreader's part!)

(one of the jokes in computing circles is that most technical proofreaders have dyslexia... and self-describe their profession as proffredder...)

The CHM's machine was made to the tolerances capable of being made in Babbage's time, proving that the design would have worked, as this machine does work. (if Babbage had ever finalized a design, that is!)

Update: since this shot was posted, the Difference Engine has been re-located away from the CHM to an unknown (to the poster) location...

Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States of America

SUMMARY

The Ocean on the Park Historic District comprises a group of twelve row houses built between 1909 and 1918 on Ocean Avenue, between Lincoln Road and Parkside Avenue, in Flatbush overlooking Prospect Park.

Flatbush, an area once home to the Canarsee band of the Lenape, was established by the Dutch in the seventeenth century as a farming community divided into forty-eight large land patents and a civic center with church, courthouse and school. Flatbush retained its rural character until after the Civil War when civic improvements like Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Bridge and improved transportation to Brooklyn and Manhattan attracted developers to the area.

In 1905, Charles G. Reynolds, a prominent Brooklyn developer purchased a large parcel on Ocean Avenue across from Prospect Park that had once belonged to Jeremiah Vanderbilt, a descendant of Jan Aertsen Vanderbilt progenitor of the Vanderbilt family in America, and which had most likely had been part of the 1661 land patent granted to the family by Peter Stuyvesant. After supplementing this parcel with the purchase of a gore in 1909, Reynolds hired Axel S. Hedman, a prolific designer of row houses in Brooklyn, to design a row of fourteen houses. Construction was halted c. 1910 after completion of only ten houses. Nos. 193 to 211 Ocean Avenue are fine examples of the Renaissance Revival style with limestone facades featuring angular or rounded bays, terraces with balustrades or parapets above raised basements, subdued classical ornament and deep galvanized-iron cornices. Taking advantage of the 150-foot deep lots, Hedman set the row back thirty feet providing unusually deep front yards that he interconnected by a common walkway and bordered by a low wall adjoining the sidewalk.

In 1915, Philip A. Faribault, a civil engineer, purchased one of the remaining lots from Reynolds and designed his own residence in the Federal Revival style. The brick house at No. 191 Ocean Avenue has stone stills and lintels, a simple cornice and segmental-arched entrance surround with Ionic columns in antis characteristic of the style. In recognition of the growing popularity of the automobile among the middle-class, a garage (since converted into a medical office) was incorporated into the first story of the house.

No. 189 Ocean Avenue was designed for Charles G. Reynolds in 1917 by Eric O. Holmgren, another prominent Brooklyn architect, and completed the following year. The Arts and Crafts style house, while altered, retains its simple form, subtle brick detailing and a bracketed metal cornice surmounted by a hipped roof with pantiles.

The Ocean on the Park Historic District, with its uniform 30-foot setback and low-scale, reflecting an earlier period in the urbanization of Flatbush, forms a distinctive enclave on a block otherwise densely occupied by apartment houses.

HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE OCEAN ON

THE PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT

By the latter part of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the once rural community of Flatbush was developing as a significant residential neighborhood. Residents from the more developed city of Brooklyn as well as Manhattan, attracted by the newly opened Prospect Park and aided by improved transportation and the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, pushed farther into the rural areas of Kings County. Much of the building in Flatbush during this period took the form of freestanding, single-family, frame residences built for the middle class like those that began to appear on Ocean Avenue by 1888. As Flatbush’s popularity increased, two-family frame dwellings, one- and two-family row houses, apartment houses, and tenements were constructed to house the growing population. Like the nearby Prospect Lefferts Gardens Historic District, the Ocean on the Park Historic District continues the tradition of the turn-of-the-century urbanistic row houses.

Colonial Period

When the Dutch arrived in the seventeenth century, the western end of Long Island was covered by fields and forests divided by a ridge of hills (the glacial moraine) that ran northeasterly from the Narrows. Between these hills and the waters of Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean was a plain with patches of treeless tracts surrounded by forests through which an Indian trail passed. This is the area that would become the settlements of Flatbush, Flatlands, and New Utrecht.

Until the arrival of the Dutch colonists, the area had been home to the Canarsee band of the Lenape whose principal settlement, Keskachane (meaning “council fire”), was located near the intersection of modern-day Flatbush Avenue and King’s Highway. The main trail, Mechawanienk, meaning old or ancient path or trail, and its adjoining paths provided the Canarsee with access to campsites along the shore for fish and shellfish, the woods for fuel and game and arable land for agriculture. The Dutch habitation of the area began around the mid-1630s when three plots known to the Dutch as “flats” were “purchased” from the Canarsee by Jacobus van Corlear and Wolphert Gerritsen, Andreas Hudde and Wouter van Twiller, director of the province.

The Dutch West India Company’s policy directed that all land be bought and owned by the Company, not individuals. Consolidation of all land holdings under the company began under Director William Kieft (1637-1647) and continued under his successor, Director-General Peter Stuyvesant (1647-1664). Stuyvesant established the farming hamlet of Midwout or Midwood c. 1652 and on October 1, 1652 he and his councilors annulled all individually held land titles and transferred the property to the company claiming that “private ownership was to the serious damage and prejudice of the new village of Midwout.”

The farms had been laid out in an irregular manner making them poorly defensible. In 1655 Jan Snedecker, Thomas Swartwout and Adrian Hegeman presented Governor Stuyvesant with a new town plan which he accepted. Under this plan, Midwout stretched from the moraine on the north to a pond and creek that separated it from Amersfoort or Flatlands on the south and by hardwood forests on the east and west. Forty-eight lots were staked out running east or west from the old Native American trail. The lots were distributed by letters patent and others set aside for public buildings such as the church and courthouse. By 1658 Midwout or Flatbush had become the county seat and an important market town.

In 1664 Governor Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam to the British. The British moved the county seat to Gravesend circa 1668 and created a separate administrative district of the five Dutch towns of Brooklyn, Bushwick, Flatbush, Flatlands and New Utrecht. In 1685 under Governor Thomas Dongan, the more centrally located Flatbush became the seat of justice once more. That same year Dongan, in response to an application from the residents of Flatbush, granted a new confirmatory patent covering Flatbush, Canarsee Meadows, Keuters Hook and New Lots. Among the patentees listed in the grant was Aries Jansen Vanderbilt.

Slavery, already established in Manhattan, spread to Kings County in 1660 under the governorship of Peter Stuyvesant and continued to grow under the British. The first census of Kings County in 1698 recorded the presence of 296 slaves or 15 percent of the population. That year seventy-one of the slaves were owned by residents of Flatbush. By 1737 the percentage of black slaves in Brooklyn had grown to 25 percent. In Flatbush the percentage was slightly higher, nearly 30 percent. One hundred fifty-eight of the town’s 539 residents were enslaved; the men working long hours as farm laborers while the women joined the women of the household in domestic chores. By 1771 the slave population for the county had grown to 1,162. Slavery in Flatbush continued until 1827 when it was officially abolished in New York State.

At the start of the American Revolution, the Dutch inhabitants of Brooklyn were ambivalent towards the patriot cause although they did send delegates to a Provincial Congress in 1775. In March 1776, General George Washington ordered the fortification of New York City and the surrounding area in expectation of an attack on New York. The British fleet under Admiral Sir Richard Howe arrived in New York Harbor on June 29, 1776 but he landed his troops in Staten Island to await reinforcements before attacking Long Island. The Battle of Brooklyn (or Battle of Long Island) began with the arrival of the first British troops at what is today Fort Hamilton on August 22, 1776. The British and their Hessian allies soon began the march across Brooklyn aiming for the four passes through the moraine that the Americans defended. The Hessians under General Philip De Heister left for Flatbush on August 25, 1776 where the residents of the town found themselves in the direct line of skirmish between the American forces and the Hessians. On August 27th, the far larger Hessian force attacked the American line under General John Sullivan at Flatbush Pass now the East Drive of Prospect Park. Following the British victory in the Battle of Brooklyn, Flatbush like the rest of the city remained under the control of the British forces until the end of the war.

Flatbush in the 19th Century

The community of Flatbush was laid out along one of the old Native American trails which was later incorporated into what became Flatbush Avenue. The institutional center with its church, courthouse and school was located at the modern-day intersection of Church and Flatbush Avenues. The first Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church was constructed in 1662 and replaced twice over the course of the next one hundred and thirty-one years. The current Federal-style Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church designed by Thomas Fardon (a designated New York City Landmark) has been in use since 1793. The courthouse was built next door and the first public school was built in 1658 opposite the church. In 1787 the private Erasmus Hall Academy, the first secondary school chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, was established near the public school.

A fire destroyed the courthouse in 1832 and the courts were moved to the city of Brooklyn. No longer the county seat, Flatbush reverted to a quiet rural community until after the Civil War when continuing advances in public transportation, the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and the creation of Prospect Park attracted developers to the area. Some residential development had occurred in Flatbush in the 1830s; but, with only Smith Birdsall’s single daily stagecoach connecting it to Brooklyn, Flatbush was still too remote from the commercial centers of Brooklyn and Manhattan. In 1840, the population of Flatbush was only 1,537.

Transportation between Brooklyn and Flatbush improved as Birdsall’s stagecoach was replaced by omnibuses in 1843 and other stage lines in the 1850s with more frequent service. Flatbush Avenue was laid out from Fulton Street Brooklyn to the city line in 1854 and extended to Malbone Street (now Empire Boulevard) in 1858. Meanwhile, the original plank road that ran through the village of Flatbush was replaced with macadam. In 1860, the Brooklyn City Railroad Company extended its horsecar line down Flatbush Avenue to the village of Flatbush, improving travel time between Flatbush and downtown Brooklyn.

Development in Flatbush was further spurred by the construction of Prospect Park (Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, 1866-73, a designated New York City Scenic Landmark) whose southern portion lies within the boundaries of Flatbush. Within a year, streets were being laid out near the park and many of the descendants of the old Dutch families were selling off their acreage. By 1880, Flatbush had lost about half of its agricultural land to development.

In 1878 the Brooklyn, Flatbush & Coney Island Railroad, the forerunner of today’s Brighton Beach (B and Q) Line of the New York City Subway, began service through Flatbush in an open culvert adjoining the eastern boundary of the Ocean on the Park Historic District. Built as an excursion line carrying passengers to the Brighton Beach Hotel, the line inaugurated service on July 2nd of that year. The railroad hit hard times in the mid-1880s after the Long Island Railroad canceled its lease but it was reincorporated as the Brooklyn & Brighton Beach Railroad in 1887 and by 1896 the new company was offering through-service between the Brooklyn Bridge and Brighton Beach over a newly constructed link to the Fulton Street Elevated. The Brooklyn Rapid Transit company acquired the Brooklyn & Brighton Beach in 1899 and under their ownership the line was electrified and service extended to Manhattan. In 1905 the Brighton Beach

Railroad through Flatbush was expanded to four tracks, grade-crossings were removed and the overhead power lines were replaced with a third rail. Complementing this newly improved rail service was the construction of a trolley line along Ocean Avenue by the Nassau Electric Railroad circa 1893.

With these improvements, the suburbanization of Flatbush began in the 1880s as an increasing number of freestanding homes were constructed for individual owner-occupants. In 1886 large scale speculative development in Flatbush began when Richard Ficken, a local entrepreneur, purchased land in the center of Flatbush for his Tennis Court project. Houses were built within specific boundaries in which the construction and sale of houses could be carefully controlled. Other developers followed, the Germania Real Estate and Improvement Company began their project in Vanderveer Park in 1892, following it with another in South Midwood in 1899. That same year Dean Alvord began Prospect Park South between Church Avenue and Beverly Road, west of the railroad tracks, the finest suburban style development in Flatbush and a designated New York City Historic District. Large developments of freestanding houses continued into the first decade of the 20th century with Beverly Square West (1901), Ditmas Park (1902, a designated New York City Historic District), Ditmas Park West (1903) and Fiske Terrace and Midwood Park (1905 and 1903, a designated New York City Historic District).

In the northern section of Flatbush, James Lefferts subdivided his family farm east of Flatbush Avenue into 600 lots in 1893 for the construction of Lefferts Manor, a high-grade, middle-class residential development between Lincoln Road, Fenimore Street, Flatbush Avenue and Rogers Avenue. Covenants restricted construction to stone or brick single-family dwellings, two stories high with basements and set back a minimum of fourteen feet from the street, with bay windows and bow fronts.

The first row houses in Flatbush began to appear around the turn of the century. A row of four houses in the Romanesque Revival/Renaissance Revival style were constructed in 1895 at 185-191 Lincoln Road in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood (a designated New York City Historic District that includes the aforementioned Lefferts Manor). Between 1897 and 1899 over 160 dwellings of various types were constructed in this area of Flatbush but sales were slow and development ceased altogether in 1903 as a result of the financial panic that occurred that year. Residential development east of Flatbush Avenue resumed in 1905 and continued unabated until 1911. Presumably it was this increased activity that encouraged Charles

G. Reynolds to purchase and develop the property on Ocean Avenue.

Development of Ocean on the Park

The land on which the Ocean on the Park Historic District was constructed was once owned by Jeremiah Vanderbilt, a descendant of Jan Aertsen Vanderbilt, and may have been part of the land patent granted to his ancestor by Peter Stuyvesant in 1661.

The first Vanderbilt to settle in America, Jan Aertsen Vanderbilt, was born in Bilt, the Netherlands c. 1627. He emigrated as a boy in 1640 and settled in Flatbush where he was apprenticed to Peter Wolphertsen Van Couwenhoven for three years. In 1650 he married Annekin Hendricks and the following year their son Aris Janse was born. Jan Aertsen received a conveyance for his patent in 1661 from Governor Stuyvesant. His name appears on the tax list for Flatbush in 1683. However, at the time of his death c. 1705, he had moved to Bergen County, New Jersey.

Aris Janse Vanderbilt who was named on the 1685 Dongan patent for Flatbush married Hilletie or Hillegond Remsen in 1677 two years after first appearing on the tax rolls for Flatbush. By 1698 the Vanderbilt household not only included Aris Janse and his wife, but their ten children and five slaves. Two of the younger children were Jeremias

(b. 1695) whose line would remain in Flatbush and Jacob (b. 1692) founder of the Staten Island branch of the family and ancestor of “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt. The Vanderbilt holdings which extended westward from what would become Flatbush Avenue remained intact for several generations until the death of John Vanderbilt, greatgreat-grandson of Jan Aertsen, in 1812 when it was divided between his surviving sons Jeremiah (1778-1853) and John (1794-1843).

John (1752-1812), a farmer, and his wife Marritje Ditmars (1757-1830) had ten children (four of whom died in childhood) and owned several slaves. Jeremiah and John continued to farm the family land with the assistance of slaves into the 1820s. John manumitted two of his slaves in 1822, five years before the official abolition of slavery in New York State in 1827.

When the land was divided between the brothers, the family holdings extended from Flatbush Avenue westward to the “patent line between the towns of Flatbush and Brooklyn.” In 1860, Jeremiah’s holdings were sold by the family to investors. Within a decade Prospect Park soon consumed much of the western portion of the former Vanderbilt lands and Ocean Avenue was laid out along the park’s eastern edge between 1871 and 1873. The former Vanderbilt land was further divided when the Brooklyn, Flatbush and Coney Island Railroad obtained easements to lay its line from Lincoln Road to Parkside Avenue.

The block of Ocean Avenue opposite Prospect Park remained relatively undeveloped until the 20th century. Several frame houses set on large lots had been constructed by 1888 but it was not until Charles G. Reynolds purchased the large 150foot deep plot on Ocean Avenue in 1905 that the more urbanistic row house type appeared on this block of Ocean Avenue.

Charles G. Reynolds (1863-1926), the son of an immigrant house builder, had a thirty-year career as a house and apartment developer in his native Brooklyn. Among the 500 buildings he constructed over his career were the row houses at 1291 and 1293 Dean Street (c. 1903) in the Crown Heights North Historic District and 153-181 Rutland Road

(c. 1908) in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Historic District, all of which were designed by Axel S. Hedman, with whom he collaborated on his Ocean Avenue project.

Reynolds and Hedman filed an application with the Department of Buildings for a row of fourteen, single-family limestone houses on Ocean Avenue in 1909. Ten of the houses (Nos. 193-211 Ocean Avenue) were completed c. 1910. Four of them were purchased in 1910, but it took another eight years to sell the remaining six. Reynolds cancelled the construction of the last four houses in 1911 and the lots remained undeveloped for several years.

The Swedish-born architect Axel S. Hedman (1861-1943) immigrated to the United States in 1880 and settled in Brooklyn. His architectural career appears to have begun around 1894 when he was a principle in the firm of Hedman & Dahlander (18941896) with Magnus Dahlander and continued well into the 20th century both as a solo practitioner and a partner in the firm of Hedman & Schoen (1906-1918) with Eugene Schoen. Although Hedman designed a wide variety of buildings he is best known for his row house designs, particularly those in the Renaissance Revival style.

The Renaissance Revival style, popular from about 1880 to 1920, is characterized by simple, restrained Renaissance design forms; an interest in classicism; light-colored facades; subdued classical ornament concentrated around the door and window openings; applied detail including motifs of wreaths, baskets of fruit and garlands of flowers; entrance surrounds featuring a full stone enframement; iron grille-work at the door and simple iron cornices with Renaissance-inspired ornament. The limestone-fronted houses at 193 to 211 Ocean Avenue are fine examples of this style. Similar to rows he was designing at 1374 to 1384 Dean Street and 891 to 901 St. Mark’s Avenue (now part of the Crown Heights North Historic District) at around the same time, the three-story houses on raised basements have angular or rounded bays and balustraded terraces in lieu of the traditional L-shaped stoops. Here however, Hedman was able to take advantage of the site’s 150-foot depth to set the row back thirty feet providing the houses with unusually deep front yards. Along the row, Hedman alternated rounded and two sizes of angular bays, each of which is associated with specific details at the windows and doors. Yet, through the deft application of different ornamental elements each house is unique from its companions.

The early residents of the Ocean on the Park Historic District were middle-class businessmen or professionals and their families. The most historically prominent of them was Charles H. Ebbets, owner of the Brooklyn Baseball Club (later the Brooklyn Dodgers) and developer of Ebbets Field. Others were Warren H. Bristol, a lawyer; William H. Meyer, a retired liquor wholesaler; and Daniel A. Killeen, a proofreader for the New York Tribune. Within a few years, they were joined by Frederick Westlake, an executive in a paper company and Ivan Shestacovsky and Semeon (or Simon) Gloushkoff, Russian émigrés who came to the United States with their families following the Russian Revolution.

In 1915 Philip Faribault (1869-1952) purchased a lot from Reynolds immediately to the north of the completed row. Faribault immigrated to the United States from Canada in 1891. He settled in Brooklyn, where he worked from 1896 to 1908 as a civil engineer in the Bureau of Buildings before opening his own engineering firm. Acting as his own architect, Faribault designed his brick residence in the then fashionable Federal Revival style. The Federal Revival style drew on the precedents of the earlier Federal style which had been characterized by modest scale and simple architectural ornament inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The brick dwelling at 191 Ocean Avenue with its stone sills and lintels, simple cornice and entrance with arched brick lintel with Ionic columns in antis is a fine example of the adaptation of Federal-style elements to the needs of the 20th century. The intentional asymmetry of the façade results from Faribault’s incorporation of a ground floor garage (since converted to a doctor’s office) which he camouflaged with a variation on French doors.

In 1917-18 Reynolds developed the last of his lots. He hired Eric O. Holmgren to design a pair of houses in the Arts and Crafts style.

Holmgren (1879-1950) practiced architecture in his native Brooklyn from 1896 until shortly before his death in 1950. In addition to the house at 189 Ocean Avenue, he designed the row houses at 122-134 Brooklyn Avenue (c. 1918) in the Crown Heights North Historic District. His institutional designs included St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on McDonough Street, Zion Lutheran Church at 59th Street and 11th Avenue and the Kallman Home for Children (now the Adelphi Academy) at Ridge Boulevard and 85th Street. In the 1940s he served as a director of the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The Arts and Crafts movement originated in England in the late 19th century as a reaction to the more elaborate revival styles of the time. Its emphasis was on simplicity of form, modest decoration and an ‘honest” use of materials. Although modified, the brick dwelling at 189 Ocean Avenue reflects the edict of the Arts and Crafts style through its simple design and subtle brick detailing.

Reynolds sold the semi-attached house at No. 189 to Mrs. Emily Howe, a doctor’s wife, who used it as investment property for several years.

Subsequent History

The population of Flatbush continued to increase as the Brighton Beach subway line was opened in 1920 drawing new residents, many of them Irish or Jewish, to the area. By 1930, the population of Brooklyn had risen to 2,560,401. The previous year the Flatbush Chamber of Commerce estimated that the area’s population was approximately 400,000, one third of them Jewish. To house the growing population, residential construction shifted to multiple-family dwellings beginning in the 1920s. Along Ocean Avenue, the freestanding houses that had abutted the Ocean on the Park Historic District were replaced by four to six story apartment houses by the end of the decade.

During this period, community boosters and promoters, like the Chamber of Commerce, touted the neighborhood’s benefits. Flatbush had fifteen theatres, including the Loew’s Kings, an architectural confection inspired by the Palace of Versailles, and one of the chain’s five “Wonder Theaters” built in the New York area. Two subways and six trolley lines served the neighborhood. Residents had a choice of five weekly newspapers to read. Education was provided at twenty public schools, nine parochial grade schools and three high schools including Erasmus Hall. During the Great Depression, the New Deal funded the construction of the Brooklyn College campus in Flatbush.

By the 1930s several of the houses in the Ocean on the Park Historic District had been purchased by doctors and converted to residences with medical offices, while others were subdivided to accommodate more than one family. Reflecting the large Jewish population in Flatbush, No. 211 Ocean Avenue was owned by Rabbi Pinchas S. Hamber and served as a synagogue for Congregation Lomdei Torah from 1947 to 1972.

Following the Second World War, the demographics of Flatbush began to change. The population of Flatbush remained predominately white through the 1950s but increasing numbers of black families moved into Flatbush in the 1960s. By 1980 Flatbush had become home to a population that was 80 percent non-white, many of the new residents were from the Caribbean as well as parts of Asia and Latin America.

Located across from Prospect Park, the deeply setback three-story dwellings with generous front yards in the Renaissance Revival, Federal Revival and Arts and Crafts styles represent the early stages of urban development in Flatbush. Now dwarfed by the apartment houses which share the blockfront between Lincoln Road and Parkside Avenue, the Ocean on the Park Historic District remains as a fine example of small scale residential development in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

i finished the final proofreads for my book yesterday -- so unless something goes crazily wrong with the index (being compiled by a freelancer), it is officially DONE except for the physical printing!

cover photos are all by me (and all here on Flickr!), as are most of the illustrations in the book.

and you can already pre-order it here!

I've been VERY tagged by Ariel.Chaos, Eleinx and Skeleton Marie so here we go…

Edited: Grazie carissima kittylove1 per la invitazione! :-D My first attempt of italian solo. Shame on me... :-P

1.First of all: I hardly know what this list of 10 facts about me will say of me. However, I know which facts I won’t mention. All I hope now is being as honest as I can but keeping some reasonable level of privacy. :-)

2.The source of beauty: If you can’t feel sorry, if you can’t feel and express gratitude, if you’re not aware of your own mistakes, if you can’t freely give, if you’re cold and cruel and you feel proud of being this way, if you reject the weakness and you just can’t understand how weak, how fragile is the universe, if you judge the whole world through these lens you’re not an artist. No matter how loud and often you say so you just can’t be one because you can’t feel the need to express anything. Even nihilism can offer much more of itself and I daily fear being this way.

3.Assorted thoughts: A) I’d lie if I say I have nothing to prove. I need to prove I can, never mind what it is. You must know I could. B) I don’t like the times we have to live. C) I’m tired of hearing “Where you come from?” every single day. I come from / I am / I’ll go everywhere. D) My queer nature can’t help it: I don’t trust in men who wear white pants. It’s silly, I know, but it’s also true. E) Sometimes I breathe, sometimes I heave a sigh. F) I miss a lot of persons located worldwide. G) Some of you are really special to me. You know that. Thank you very much.

4.Self perception: I’m not better, I’m unique. I’m the only one you can’t have. I’m so different that I see how difficult is managing me, no matter how far or close we are. I don’t know how this sounds but I’m based on my own experience. Feel free to take the first step in order to prove how real this curse is. I’m so easy though...

5.Portraiture: I do self portraits to understand myself under certain circumstances. Sometimes I really feel I can read your whole being based on some picture. Portraiture is a beautiful art that transcends the beauty of the model. Curiously, I’ve realized I never take pictures of me when I feel great because I feel there’s nothing to understand behind a smile beyond happiness itself. However, I’ll try to bring the camera with me the next time I feel fine.

6.What I love: I love colours, I love shapes, I love paper, I love boxes, I love a lot of things. I love L.O.S.T, Seinfeld and The I.T Crowd... Pff! Hundreds of some other TV Series. I love people. Actually I love everyone I know. I’m curious about people and I LOVE knowing people. I love remembering and I hate forgetting. That’s totally me.

7.As much as I give, as much I feel rich. I love helping people. I love to feel I’m useful or necessary somehow. I really love it.

8.I’m working on three different personal projects now. Two books and some other things related to music and photography. I’d like to finish and make more concrete at least two of them this year. It’s really important to me.

9.I love languages. Besides Spanish, Catalan and English I’d like to speak 3 more languages even though sometimes I feel I’d like to improve my English language skills firstly, so any comment or proofreading will be truly appreciated. I confess I’m not totally focused on writing these lines now.

10.I believe in God. I’d say I’ve built my own private religion. Mother Nature is involved too. I’m a bit superstitious, that’s why I’m not telling some things about me here.

I don’t know who to tag now...

I will write down a little list of taggable contacts soon. You won't need to follow this chain of silly things but it would be fun to read about you. Really! :-)

Rant: (note, this illustrious event occurred 23 January '07)

I was subjected to a fairly brutal meeting today.

It seems, last Saturday, whilst proofreading pages [for Sunday's paper], I missed the fact that an editor forgot to place [on the cover] a tease banner which directs readers to inside columnist content.

I'd got a heads up on Sunday to "be prepared for a spanking" on Monday.

In preparation for said spanking, I decided to dress appropriately, considering I'd be meeting with Upper Management and all. I mean, I knew they'd be wearing 18-piece suits. So I wore ripped up Levis and a Teamster t-shirt. Upper Management just *loves* us Union Folk. (/sarcasm) Jaws dropped when I entered the room. Literally.

So I sat down at the end of a rather large table ... the UM sitting 'round the other end of the table. Seven of 'em. The queen of the bunch, Janet [cunt] Owen [aka VP of Operations] sitting directly opposite me, drumming her fingers on the table (okay so I was a few minutes late ... fashionably dontchaknow).

After a short but decidedly condescending "Good afternoon Amber, thank you for joining us blah blah blah ..." Janet layed into me.

Holy shit, the way I was brow beaten, no joke, you'd think I'd single-handedly brought about the decline of western civilization.

After rambling through babble-on Babylon, eventually Janet opined: "Amber, we've estimated that your oversight has cost the newspaper approximately fifteen-thousand-dollars in newsstand sales."

Fifteen.

Thousand.

Dollhairs.

I nearly choked on my diet Dew.

...

Oh FUCK ME. How goddamned rediculous. I mean c'mon. Hey, hey you, oh newspaper-reader-extraordinaire ... let's say, hypothetically, you're in a grocery store or gas station or whatever. You spot a newsstand, and are of a mind to buy the local rag. You pick up a copy in your hot little hands and commence to perusing the cover ... but, noting there's no "See such-and-such columnist's column on such-and-such page," you promptly are turned off, decide not to buy the rag and abruptly drop it back on the pile.

I should reiterate here, it was an EDITOR who neglected to place the blurb banner. Hey, I just read the goddamned pages ... and I read backwards so as to catch typos and not be distracted by the actual story.

I like my job. Really. But I positively despise the assholes for whom I work. Really. Thank gods we were sold. Nothing can be worse than fucking McClatchy.

Day after day, year after year, the Earth, the moon, the sun is constantly rotated; life, the human heart is with the rotation of day and night constantly pulsates ...... Seen in this light, Once stagnation, rotating and pulsating, nature and life will be how the outcome, rotating planets and life beat, it does not mean all the success Shengongguifu nature of human society, for him, the rotation will always be unalterable..; The first thing you want to beat is the survival of human life, the human world and the natural world if radical departure, beating of human life and the entire human society will tend to collapse and die. There are a variety of life perception and interpretation, some clear, some obscure, some bright, some dark. In fact, both positive and anti, right and wrong, are left in the world and future generations valuable voice. The struggle of life, wealth, power, fame, status, love, family, career, trying to brilliant pinnacle, everything can not be overstated. In fact, whether or halfway up the mountain to reach the summit, or in the foothills, is a kind of happiness and enjoyment The natural world is always bland, calm as the sea, the human world though a little more luster and warmth, but also in flat calm situation, although sometimes reveal a storm, high Wutu onwards, influence or change their own life trajectory. Creating the world's history, rather, created the first insight into the world of deep eyes of individuals and groups. Absence or lack of such vision and starting line, must be attributed to arrogance and defeat. Thousands of the world, thousands of images. Thousands of pairs of eyes, thousands of hands. Myriad masterpiece, thousands of souls. In this absolutely thousands among the only altars and shrines in addition to the idol, is the soul and sense Money makes the sedative comfort. As everyone knows, regardless of the fate of Jian wrong, the world is still good for the good to suffer for the music, to generate Bo death, repeatedly, during the era of generations, the most common interpretation of the most widespread human history. World often emerged outstanding figures of the gods, can epoch, badly can be interpreted from the myths and legends; but from nature and reality is often absurd theory of a weird or just give up. People out from nature, and not simply out of the world of human society. On the contrary, nature can only come out from nature, but does not come out from the world of human life. (Fangruida famous classic) World sideways look, rainbow Jinxia sky; world bristling see if inverted observed haze over the Thunder, the scene is easy enough, haze Thunder sky, rainbow Jinxia everywhere. And nonsense are raving idiot, proverbs and reason is the only path to truth. The unexamined not create the world, wasted years of mediocrity; only diligent, chest Tao Wu slightly in order to lead the world, innovation in the world. Eternal life is worth, rather than length. The world is mortal beings, not a genius and a saint can substitute the no genius and saints, beings naturally generated, no beings, genius and saints will be gone. No one can accurately predict the future of nature and the world, but human wisdom advanced super location but can draw no less natural universe and human society generally rough image for the future. Even far beyond the vision of God. Human nature is present in higher animals on the natural world, although it has a powerful transformation force wisdom and creativity, but not completely out of nature, after all, a fundamental fantasy or fiction of human nature and animal instinct has been completely isolated gene molecular bodiless not fanaticism is ignorant, because he was not placed in front of infantilism is the first force manic hysteria syndrome. This is an isolated Case Study portion of a cool infographic produced by the White House and published on June 3, 2011 in anticipation of a panned visit by President to the Jeep Assembly Plant in Toledo, MI.

Another clear reason to Buy American!

The original Willys MB "Jeep" 4x4 for World War II was produced in the now demolished Toledo South Assembly Plant. The Toledo Assembly Complex is a World Class facility that is raising Wrangler quality to new heights.

NOTE: The White House needs a proofreader - should be "Continental Structural Plastics" instead of "Conteintal Structural Plastics" for the Hardtop supplier.

We finished things up in the wee hours of Saturday morning after a very long Friday. If all goes to plan, the official launch will be in a few weeks.

In the meantime, some sleep, and then catching up on various things, including some Flickr time.

Shot on iPhone 6.

This is the new children's hospital opposite my daughter's school. It's only a new building and there have been reports of teething problems - but it certainly is striking architecture.

We had teacher parent meetings today and I got to meet my daughter's French teacher. We told him the story of how we were married in France. And in organising the wedding, in my bad schoolboy French I wrote a letter to send off to a church minister asking if we could get married in his "voiture". Luckily I got someone to proofread it or we might have ended up getting married in a car instead of a church :-)
