AN ESSAY ABOUT THE UNITED NATIONS, CAPITALISM, SOCIALISM, COMMUNISM, RECLAIMING OUR NATIONAL UNITY AND HOW THE RETURNING VETERANS OF THE MIDDLE EAST WILL BECOME THE NEW HOPE FOR A UNITED STATES OF PROSPERITY AND CAPITALISM...

It is kind of like ancient history in that Rome paid tribute to the Huns for a long period of time and all the while the Huns demanded more and more.
If there are those that have not read about the decline of the once great Roman Empire, let me recommend it as reading that will help explain the concern of many United States citizens.
Personally, I view the United Nations as one of the enemies within. Back when the United Nations began, it was a great and wonderful organization, a kind of hope for world peace.
Throughout the years, we have seen it change. I have noticed that in the interest of today's trend in political correctness that has, in my opinion, driven more than a few good women and men totally insane and ruined thought processes that could have added great contributions to the world as a whole, keeping in perspective the reality of boundaries, economics, immigration policies and the prosecution of war criminals. I have seen the love the world had for America turn into a vile hatred due to the propaganda spread by ever-increasing new and strange member nations that held great grudges against the United States and other like nations.
There was room in the United Nations for all nations, but once the issue of religion entered into the hallowed auditoriums of the United Nations, it was, to quote an oft-mispronounced idiom "...all she wrote." Oh, there was no problem with religion as long as it was not associated with Christianity. I have no bones to pick with other religions; I rather admire the Bhuddists, their gentle nature is admirable.
In my opinion, the issues of importance in the United Nations should have remained focused on world hunger, world habitat, world conservation and various earth-be-saved programs. Now, however, the United Nations has started talks about criticism of religion. I do not think Scientology is an issue for the United Nations. If my cousin in Miami wants to write a column about the violence perpetuated by a numerically-focused group of unidentifiable Scientologists, I believe she should have that right. To get to my point immediately, the United Nations is not and should never be used as a forum for discussing ANY type of religious beliefs and I will include ALL OF THE RELIGIONS ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET. If we are going to address religion in the United Nations, the United Nations should be moved immediately to another nation and the United State should resign. Religion and government in the United States is seperate; so should it be in the United Nations.
Without the United States, where would the U.N. relocate and where would they collect their funds? The more this nation and its leaders pay tribute to the United Nations, the sooner this nation will suffer a collapse that will only be prevented by a complete change of voting habits of this populace. Many of those who have been in Washington for more than two terms have forgotten they are United States citizens and feel like they are beyond reproach involving their initial purpose of representing their people back home; many have lost touch with their constituents and are, in many respects, their own unique and sovereign nation with their own medical care, their own retirement plans, and their own government supplied autos and offices with their own an personal "official" budgets supplied by both their states and the Federal Government. They are the ELITE, like the elite in the nations that have covertly removed democracy and capitalism, replacing them with socialism, the first step, as history proves, to the adoption of communism.
Shame on our Senators and Representatives who are no longer representing their constituents but representing and supporting each other, making alliances that are all too often personal and financially influenced to add wealth to their own accounts. If there is a spread the wealth mentatlity here, it is spreading the wealth within their own elite society.
Many in the government today have not spent one day in the military, a sad fact because unless one serves in the military it is almost impossible to understand how military minds work when it comes to serving for one purpose and one purpose only, the preservation of freedom for all, especially the home folks, the people back home in the seperate states, the boundaried domains of republics that are a homeland within a Homeland.
The last successful collection of homelands within a Homeland that were socialist republics with a "united" that was not a name but an afterthought was the USSR and as we all know, they went bankrupt, closed, went out of business. There are those in America today who have lost faith in private enterprise, but not so much "private enterprise" but Capitalism. No, these people are not the enemies within, they are not the enemies of the state, they are but confused men and women who have confused economic thoughts, men and women who have no real knowledge of American history, men and women who have looked upon Sweden and Norway, a blue-eyed and blonde-haired bunch with what seems a perfect socialist system, albeit that their taxes are the highest in the world, they have the best healthcare programs. How ironic that long after the fall of blonde-haired and blue-eyed Colonialism, third world personalities admire another Anglo scheme that has yet to be completely revealed. We had best stick to what the forefathers had in mind for American economics. Capitalism won't work?
It worked a lot longer than any socialism that I can recall. My God, I hope we continue to thrive and succeed as a nation that is a Capitalistic nation and do not fall victim to yet another blonde-haired and blue-eyed concoction like Scandanavian Socialism. I chose the Scandanavian brand of socialism rather than the socialism of the third world nations because there are so many more wide-screen televisions and Volvos in the Scandanavian brand. Confused? Do not be. Let us make certain, however, that the next President is an avowed Capitalist. But what do we do about all of the career Senators and Representatives, so many of them with snowy hair, an indication of retirement age? What do we do with them? We have no gulags in America, thankfully. It is time to send these stately gentlemen, white and black, back home to where they began, back home to become reacquainted with their homelands in the winter of their lives.
IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE WE HAVE A NEW GENERATION OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE SERVED HONORABLY IN THE MILITARY, much like the men and women who served America in World War Two and Korea, a generation that helped America remain great and prosperous. Hopefully, these post war vets of the Middle East will want to serve in government. Let us not give up hope, thousand upon thousand of military veterans will once again serve the states and this nation and we shall be vigilant in a united effort once again.

Writers and authors with an English degree create original written materials for a wide range of online and offline publications including books, magazines, trade journals, company newsletters, and advertisements. In general, writers tend to specialize in certain types of writing such as novels, plays, biographies, and textbooks. Other types of writers include news analysts, reporters and correspondents who work in the newspaper or magazine publishing industry. In practice, editors are actually discouraged from marking up corrections in red. Apparently, annotation in red surfaces uncomfortable associations with "marking".
Our kingdom for a CMS!
Experimentation was at the heart of this newspaper project. A chance for us to remind ourselves of the process of creating copy for a deadline, without the luxury of a CMS and theoretically movable deadline.
We had to meet the 2pm, Tuesday 25 January deadline with Newspaper Club in order to get these papers in the post in time for delivery on 1st February.
In the rush and as expected, some things were missed and exist here, all marked up for all to see, as a sobering memory of a legacy of print which digital, theoretically, can help us hide.

Note the Neo on the desk. Yes, even with a high-powered computer two feet away to my left, I have been known to turn a quarter turn to the right and use the Neo instead. That's saying something.

Been busy proofreading tonight, so here's another one from last Friday. Ah! This cheers me up endlessly in between chasing typos and looking for mis-matched figures...
on 9.March, I discover, someone likes my Morrissey photo! Thankyou thank you thankyou!
You sit down at this chair, type some lines of text and the Intertype clickitty-clacks and whirs away, finding the master for each character you've input, puts it in its place in line, squirts molten lead into these tiny master-molds and in a few seconds you've got solid lead lines of type, ready for the press. While you proofread the freshly cast block of type, you can hear the tiny metal master characters being sent back to their original locations. This is all done mechnically. Newspapers and books were typeset this way into the 60s and 70s. Totally amazing, and actually makes modern digital printers look lowtech.

Thursday morning the sad news was passed from lip to lip that an old and esteemed citizen, William Cunningham, was dead, and it was a great shock to his friends and to the city in general, because, although he had been suffering for years with asthma, yet he had been attending to business the day before he died, and while many have expected him to pass away suddenly, yet the shock was none the less severe.
Mr. Cunningham occupied a room by himself, and it is supposed he passed away while suffering with a worse attack of asthma than usual. He was found in the morning.
William Cunningham was born in Alleghaney county, Pa., Feb. 26, 1837. The family moved to Beaver county the following year, and when he was old enough he entered Beaver Academy for two years, afterwards teaching in the public schools. He graduated from the Iron City Commercial College, of Pittsburg, and was proofreader and mailing clerk on the Presbyterian Banner and Advocate for two years. He attended the Western University of Pennsylvania two years, and then taught school in Pittsburg until the outbreak of the Rebellion.
In 1862 he enlisted in Battery G, Pennsylvania Artillery, and served through the war, and was discharged at Harrisburg in June, 1865. After the war he again taught school in Pittsburg, until his health failed when he acted as traveling salesman for the publishing house of Sheldon & Company, of New York, having his headquarters at St. Louis. He followed this business for two years. In 1871 he came to Humboldt and was employed by Col. S. H. Stevens as head man in his lumber business, where he remained two years, and then went to Kalida, the then county seat of Woodson county, and engaged in mercantile business. Afterwards he taught school in Woodson county and then engaged in farming, until the Citizens Lumber Co. of Humboldt, was organized when he was installed as manager of that concern. In 1880 he engaged in the mercantile business under the firm Neal & Cunningham, and continued in this business until elected county treasurer of Allen county, which office he held for four years, and then engaged in the lumber business under the firm name of Cunningham & Son, and they were succeeded by the Hurley Lumber Co.
In April 1871, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Etta A. Phelps, of Windsor, Mo. Their only child is A. W. Cunningham of this city, editor of the Humboldt Herald.
During Mr. Cunningham’s business career in our city and county, he has ever been actuated by the highest principles of honesty and integrity, and was ever wide-awake for the best interests of the town and community. His friends will miss him greatly as he has been a central figure in our community for many years, and they will extend deepest sympathy to the bereaved wife, son and other relatives in this sad and sudden affliction.
The funeral services of Mr. Cunningham will be held at the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8th, at 2:30. Friends wishing to see him will please call at the home Saturday morning from 10 o’clock to 1.

WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM, ex-treasurer of Allen county, whose business engagements in these parts have spanned the period of a third of a century, was born on a farm in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, February 26, 1837. His father moved to Beaver county the next year, and from the common schools of the county William entered Beaver Academy, spending two years there and the succeeding year doing his first work as a teacher in the public schools. He graduated from the Iron City Commercial College, of Pittsburg, and filled the position of proof-reader and mailing clerk on the Presbyterian Banner and Advocate for two years. In this latter capacity he earned the funds which defrayed his expenses at the Western University of Pennsylvania two years, at the conclusion of which period he engaged in teaching school in Pittsburg. Pennsylvania, following it till the outbreak of the Rebellion.
In 1862 Mr. Cunningham enlisted in Battery G, Pennsylvania Artillery, served through the war and was discharged at Harrisburg in June, 1865. On returning to civil pursuits he took up work where he left off—in the Pittsburg public schools. In a few months he was elected principal of what is now the 23rd ward school of that city and was in that position when failing health forced his retirement from the school room. Travel seemed one thing which promised the restoration of his health and he secured the general agency for the publishing house of Sheldon & Company, of New York, with headquarters at St. Louis, Missouri. He passed the two years following in the business, traveling over Missouri and Kansas, introducing their school books into the public schools, and while at Sedalia, Missouri, met a very engaging schoolma'm who afterward became his wife.
February 15, 1871, our subject came to Allen county and stopped in Humboldt. The general bustle of business and the apparent thrift of the little city attracted him and he was at once possessed of serious intention of locating there. He made the acquaintance of Colonel S. H. Stevens then in the lumber business and at noon of the same day was installed as the latter's chief clerk and salesman. He remained in this business two years and, upon retiring went to the new county seat of Woodson county, Kalida, and engaged in mercantile pursuits. Grasshoppers destroyed not only the crops of the season following but destroyed Mr. Cunningham's prospects, as well, and he traded his goods for cattle and that winter spent his time profitably by teaching a country school in Woodson county. The following spring he became a full-fledged farmer and remained such until the new Citizens Lumber Company, of Humboldt, chose him to manage their yard there. When this company was absorbed by S. A. Brown in after years the subject hereof engaged in the grocery business in Humboldt, continuing it eight years, or until his election as County Treasurer.
Mr Cunningham has ever and always been noted for his intense Rpublicanism. His interest in things political began almost with his residence in Kansas and for many years he has been recognized as one of the active, honorable and judicious counselors of his party in local affairs. He was nominated for Treasurer of the county in 1887 and in November of that year he was elected by a large majority. He was elected two years later by a larger majority than before. His popularity as a public official grew with his service and his efficiency as such is unsurpassed. On leaving the county seat in 1896 he returned to Humboldt and was identified with the Bank of Humboldt in a clerical capacity. December 3rd of that year he opened a lumber yard in Humboldt as the successor of J. P. Johnson and Leidigh & Huston. The firm of Mr. Cunningham and son is one of the prominent enterprises of the city.
In April, 1871, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Etta A. Phelps of Windsor, Missouri. Their only child is Arthur W. Cunningham, who was married May 1, 1901, to Mary I. Blackman.

Pennsylvania, following it till the outbreak of the Rebellion.
In 1862 Mr. Cunningham enlisted in Battery G, Pennsylvania Artillery, served through the war and was discharged at Harrisburg in June, 1865. On returning to civil pursuits he took up work where he left off—in the Pittsburg public schools. In a few months he was elected principal of what is now the 23rd ward school of that city and was in that position when failing health forced his retirement from the school room. Travel seemed one thing which promised the restoration of his health and he secured the general agency for the publishing house of Sheldon & Company, of New York, with headquarters at St. Louis, Missouri. He passed the two years following in the business, traveling over Missouri and Kansas, introducing their school books into the public schools, and while at Sedalia, Missouri, met a very engaging schoolma'm who afterward became his wife.
February 15, 1871, our subject came to Allen county and stopped in Humboldt. The general bustle of business and the apparent thrift of the little city attracted him and he was at once possessed of serious intention of locating there. He made the acquaintance of Colonel S. H. Stevens then in the lumber business and at noon of the same day was installed as the latter's chief clerk and salesman. He remained in this business two years and, upon retiring went to the new county seat of Woodson county, Kalida, and engaged in mercantile pursuits. Grasshoppers destroyed not only the crops of the season following but destroyed Mr. Cunningham's prospects, as well, and he traded his goods for cattle and that winter spent his time profitably by teaching a country school in Woodson county. The following spring he became a full-fledged farmer and remained such until the new Citizens Lumber Company, of Humboldt, chose him to manage their yard there. When this company was absorbed by S. A. Brown in after years the subject hereof engaged in the grocery business in Humboldt, continuing it eight years, or until his election as County Treasurer.
Mr Cunningham has ever and always been noted for his intense Rpublicanism. His interest in things political began almost with his residence in Kansas and for many years he has been recognized as one of the active, honorable and judicious counselors of his party in local affairs. He was nominated for Treasurer of the county in 1887 and in November of that year he was elected by a large majority. He was elected two years later by a larger majority than before. His popularity as a public official grew with his service and his efficiency as such is unsurpassed. On leaving the county seat in 1896 he returned to Humboldt and was identified with the Bank of Humboldt in a clerical capacity. December 3rd of that year he opened a lumber yard in Humboldt as the successor of J. P. Johnson and Leidigh & Huston. The firm of Mr. Cunningham and son is one of the prominent enterprises of the city.
In April, 1871, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Etta A. Phelps of Windsor, Missouri. Their only child is Arthur W. Cunningham, who was married May 1, 1901, to Mary I. Blackman.

Born in Missouri in 1936, Dr. Elgin has had a distinguished career as a writer, artist, linguist, verbal self-defense trainer, grandmother, publisher of the Linguistics & Science Fiction newsletter, and founder of the Science Fiction Poetry Association. In 1980, she first came to widespread attention with her book The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. Elgin’s place in the conlanger’s pantheon, however, was assured with the creation of Láadan, appearing in her Native Tongue Trilogy: Native Tongue, The Judas Rose, and Earthsong. Láadan is a language created by women for women.** The novel is set in a future where women have been subjugated to serve only as linguists for male-dominated companies dealing with various alien races. However, being linguists, the women begin to create a language to more accurately reflect their thoughts, feelings, and desires and to free them from a male-dominated, aggressive way of expressing themselves. 21-year-old Carsten Becker, a native of Braunschweig, Germany, started conlanging after reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and being amazed by "all the Quenya in there and the detail given to it." He happened upon Mark Rosenfelder's Language Construction Kit (http://www.zompist.com/kit.html) while doing Internet searches for material on Tolkien's languages. This was in 2002, and, in December 2003, Carsten began work on his conlang Ayeri after two previous abandoned attempts known as The Nameless Language and Daléian. Carsten states that "since then, Ayeri has been gradually growing, and my ultimate goal is to make it a comfortably usable (private) language -- which I think is a common goal of many conlangers." An in-depth Ayeri Coursebook was written in 2005 by Carsten and was made available on his website in a professional-looking PDF format. It included the three separate Ayeri writing systems as well as a full grammar and dictionary. Carsten is revising the Ayeri grammar to reflect changes made in the past few years and is planning on tackling the entire Coursebook next; however, information is readily available on the web at Tay Benung: The Ayeri Resource (http://benung.freehostia.com). The site includes a grammar, dictionary, texts, information on the scripts, and even recordings in Ayeri! Tay Benung is Ayeri for "The Web."
Carsten is currently in training as a publishing assistant for Westermann, one of the biggest publishers of textbooks in Germany and known internationally for their exquisite wall maps. Studying languages or linguistics sometime after finishing his training "is still at the back of my mind," Carsten admits, "as it could also be useful for getting on with my current job." And, not to mention, continuing to expand Ayeri.

Collaborative conlang projects are common on the Internet, but a venture like the exhibit you are currently viewing is unprecedented. The scale of the undertaking and the fact that it is designed for the general public (i.e., not only for other conlangers) is unique. The project was initiated by Don Boozer who wrote all the text for the exhibit (except where otherwise quoted). Any errors, factual, grammatical, or typographical, are his. Don was uniquely qualified to present this exhibit. He was a presenter at the 2007 Language Creation Conference; has published articles on conlanging in Library Journal, The Linguist (the official journal of the British Chartered Institute of Linguists), and VOYA (a journal highlighting library services to teens); and is currently working on several conlangs of his own including Dritok (an entirely voiceless language incorporating hisses, fricatives, clicks, and hand gestures for an imaginary species with no vocal cords).
One of the goals of the exhibit was “to put a face to the craft of conlanging,” and, towards this end, Don contacted a number of prominent language creators to request photos and biographical information. These conlanging celebrities graciously responded with enthusiasm and great humility and included Doug Ball (California), Carsten Becker (Germany), Måns Björkman (Sweden), Helge Fauskanger (Norway), Suzette Haden Elgin (Arkansas), Sai Emrys (California), Anthony Harris (Vermont), Sonja Elen Kisa (Canada), Marc Okrand (DC), David J. Peterson (CA), John Quijada (CA), Mark “The Zompist” Rosenfelder (Illinois), and Andrew Smith (New Zealand).
After writing the first draft of the text for the exhibit, Don posted a message on the CONLANG listserv asking for proofreading volunteers. A few hours later, a full complement of proofreaders from around the world had taken the challenge: Terrence Donnelly (Missouri), Dr. Dirk Elzinga (Utah), Sai Emrys (California), Arnt Richard Johansen (Norway), David McCann (London, England), Michael Poxon (Norfolk, England), Larry Sulky (Canada), and Steven Lytle (Ohio). The main machine (the columns) does the computing, the part at left is for engraving straight to a printing plate... (Babbage had discovered that many of the errors in the tables used at the time (1822) weren't in calculation, they were in setting the type for the table... and fatigue on the proofreader's part!)
(one of the jokes in computing circles is that most technical proofreaders have dyslexia... and self-describe their profession as proffredder...)
The CHM's machine was made to the tolerances capable of being made in Babbage's time, proving that the design would have worked, as this machine does work. (if Babbage had ever finalized a design, that is!)

Doris C. Blumenauer, 86, Hastings, Minn., died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Augustana Health Care Center, Hastings.
She was born March 24, 1921, at Ellsworth, Iowa, to Einar and Christina (Reno) Maland. She graduated from Radcliff, Iowa, High School.
She married Ivan "Blu" T. Blumenauer on May 5, 1957, at Rose Grove, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1993.
Doris retired as a proofreader for West Publishing.
Surviving are daughters, Claudia (Norm) Lee of Afton, Minn., and Laura (Tony) Ritten of Amery; a son, Dennis (Babette) of South St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Becky Iverson; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Zimmerman of Stillwater.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David; a granddaughter, Dawn Blumenauer; two brothers; and two sisters.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, from Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, Hastings, with Rev. Linda Lund, Chaplain at Augustana Health Care Center, officiating. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 11, at Lakeside Cemetery, Hastings.
Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday and an hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.

1.First of all: I hardly know what this list of 10 facts about me will say of me. However, I know which facts I won’t mention. All I hope now is being as honest as I can but keeping some reasonable level of privacy. :-)
2.The source of beauty: If you can’t feel sorry, if you can’t feel and express gratitude, if you’re not aware of your own mistakes, if you can’t freely give, if you’re cold and cruel and you feel proud of being this way, if you reject the weakness and you just can’t understand how weak, how fragile is the universe, if you judge the whole world through these lens you’re not an artist. No matter how loud and often you say so you just can’t be one because you can’t feel the need to express anything. Even nihilism can offer much more of itself and I daily fear being this way.
3.Assorted thoughts: A) I’d lie if I say I have nothing to prove. I need to prove I can, never mind what it is. You must know I could. B) I don’t like the times we have to live. C) I’m tired of hearing “Where you come from?” every single day. I come from / I am / I’ll go everywhere. D) My queer nature can’t help it: I don’t trust in men who wear white pants. It’s silly, I know, but it’s also true. E) Sometimes I breathe, sometimes I heave a sigh. F) I miss a lot of persons located worldwide. G) Some of you are really special to me. You know that. Thank you very much.
4.Self perception: I’m not better, I’m unique. I’m the only one you can’t have. I’m so different that I see how difficult is managing me, no matter how far or close we are. I don’t know how this sounds but I’m based on my own experience. Feel free to take the first step in order to prove how real this curse is. I’m so easy though...
5.Portraiture: I do self portraits to understand myself under certain circumstances. Sometimes I really feel I can read your whole being based on some picture. Portraiture is a beautiful art that transcends the beauty of the model. Curiously, I’ve realized I never take pictures of me when I feel great because I feel there’s nothing to understand behind a smile beyond happiness itself. However, I’ll try to bring the camera with me the next time I feel fine.
6.What I love: I love colours, I love shapes, I love paper, I love boxes, I love a lot of things. I love L.O.S.T, Seinfeld and The I.T Crowd... Pff! Hundreds of some other TV Series. I love people. Actually I love everyone I know. I’m curious about people and I LOVE knowing people. I love remembering and I hate forgetting. That’s totally me.
7.As much as I give, as much I feel rich. I love helping people. I love to feel I’m useful or necessary somehow. I really love it.
8.I’m working on three different personal projects now. Two books and some other things related to music and photography. I’d like to finish and make more concrete at least two of them this year. It’s really important to me.
9.I love languages. Besides Spanish, Catalan and English I’d like to speak 3 more languages even though sometimes I feel I’d like to improve my English language skills firstly, so any comment or proofreading will be truly appreciated. I confess I’m not totally focused on writing these lines now.
10.I believe in God. I’d say I’ve built my own private religion. Mother Nature is involved too. I’m a bit superstitious, that’s why I’m not telling some things about me here.

This is first test print of our book, sitting on top of a spiral bound printout of a proofreading draft.
We finished things up in the wee hours of Saturday morning after a very long Friday. If all goes to plan, the official launch will be in a few weeks.
In the meantime, some sleep, and then catching up on various things, including some Flickr time.
Rant: (note, this illustrious event occurred 23 January '07)
I was subjected to a fairly brutal meeting today.
It seems, last Saturday, whilst proofreading pages [for Sunday's paper], I missed the fact that an editor forgot to place [on the cover] a tease banner which directs readers to inside columnist content.
I'd got a heads up on Sunday to "be prepared for a spanking" on Monday.
In preparation for said spanking, I decided to dress appropriately, considering I'd be meeting with Upper Management and all. I mean, I knew they'd be wearing 18-piece suits. So I wore ripped up Levis and a Teamster t-shirt. Upper Management just *loves* us Union Folk. (/sarcasm) Jaws dropped when I entered the room. Literally.
So I sat down at the end of a rather large table ... the UM sitting 'round the other end of the table. Seven of 'em. The queen of the bunch, Janet [cunt] Owen [aka VP of Operations] sitting directly opposite me, drumming her fingers on the table (okay so I was a few minutes late ... fashionably dontchaknow).
After a short but decidedly condescending "Good afternoon Amber, thank you for joining us blah blah blah ..." Janet layed into me.
Holy shit, the way I was brow beaten, no joke, you'd think I'd single-handedly brought about the decline of western civilization.
After rambling through babble-on Babylon, eventually Janet opined: "Amber, we've estimated that your oversight has cost the newspaper approximately fifteen-thousand-dollars in newsstand sales."
Fifteen.
Thousand.
Dollhairs.
I nearly choked on my diet Dew.

Oh FUCK ME. How goddamned rediculous. I mean c'mon. Hey, hey you, oh newspaper-reader-extraordinaire ... let's say, hypothetically, you're in a grocery store or gas station or whatever. You spot a newsstand, and are of a mind to buy the local rag. You pick up a copy in your hot little hands and commence to perusing the cover ... but, noting there's no "See such-and-such columnist's column on such-and-such page," you promptly are turned off, decide not to buy the rag and abruptly drop it back on the pile.
I should reiterate here, it was an EDITOR who neglected to place the blurb banner. Hey, I just read the goddamned pages ... and I read backwards so as to catch typos and not be distracted by the actual story.
I like my job. Really. But I positively despise the assholes for whom I work. Really. Thank gods we were sold. Nothing can be worse than fucking McClatchy.

Our kingdom for a CMS!
Experimentation was at the heart of this newspaper project. A chance for us to remind ourselves of the process of creating copy for a deadline, without the luxury of a CMS and theoretically movable deadline.
We had to meet the 2pm, Tuesday 25 January deadline with Newspaper Club in order to get these papers in the post in time for delivery on 1st February.
In the rush and as expected, some things were missed and exist here, all marked up for all to see, as a sobering memory of a legacy of print which digital, theoretically, can help us hide.

Simply my daily cup of Starbucks. Sorry, I couldn't put a lot of conviction in taking a picture today, I literally spent about 5-6 hours straight last night researching, writing and proofreading a 1,000 word essay for Asian Humanities. Now this whole idea of taking 6 classes, 18 credits is wearing me down mentally and physically! >.< On Wednesday, I'm at school from 9am to 8pm, it's so exhausting. I've been running on straight caffeine, had 2 cups of coffee, 4 cups of hot Jasmine tea, and a red bull. lol Well I hope you enjoy this simplistic photo for today's entry. Noud was born in or near Wenona, MI to Ermina Jane and James Noud, who ran a liquor store. In 1897, Noud married a Russian immigrant, Wilhelm (later William) W. Rebuschatis, a printer and proofreader at the Government Printing Office. They had a daughter, Marion (1899-1978).
Per a notice in the 11/26/1918 Evening Star, Cora died of a "lingering illness" at 3228 Hiatt Place, NW. She is buried with her mother, siblings, and daughter at Oak Hill Cemetery.

November 19: At midnight a SAR page chimed: a lost hiker at Pat Springs, out of Bottcher's Gap. I debated responding for various reasons (the book I'm supposed to be proofreading, my fitness level, the fact that I'd just gotten into bed and was snuggling in with great pleasure). The last time I hiked to Pat Springs, I collapsed just at the campsite there--and back then, I was in better shape. I should probably have resisted responding. But I felt a duty. And so.
We set off hiking at 1:30 or so. (It's a bit of a drive from Monterey to Bottcher's Gap, up at the far end of Palo Colorado Road.) It is then a four-hour hike to Pat Springs--about 9 miles. Waxing moon didn't shine much light, so it was all headlamps. The trail was clear, though (unlike last time, when a middle section was navigable only thanks to pink flagging tape judiciously positioned), and we powered on. It was Alain--a machine; Dave Flower, who started out at a breakneck pace; Joe Moses; and me. Joe is certainly stronger than me, but we kept each other company. (Thanks, Joe.) I didn't hydrate well enough, and the Chinese I'd had at 6 p.m. had probably worn off by 11 p.m. So I depleted myself fully, and had to stop. I was stuttering along, holding them up.
I listened to their progress--first, by hearing their shouts ("Eric! Can you hear us?"); then by MCSO Red tone communications (an open channel); then by MoCo1 communications (more private)--though it took me a bit to figure out I had MoCo1 on my radio (it's called HLS Cmd1 on my unit--good old Homeland Security). I rested on my backpack on the trail, up against a big log; drank small sips of water, had half a power bar; dozed; shivered a bit; got up and walked around, swung my arms, tried to keep my thighs from cramping, sat down again; dozed. Eventually the sky lightened, and I started hearing chatter about helicopters. (Thank goodness yesterday evening's rain went away.) And then I heard that our subject had been found. Yay! One helo was waiting for fog to clear in Watsonville and would come down to pick us up. I was feeling more myself by then--7 a.m.-ish--and wandered back down the trail to the campsite, then up the far hill to locate an LZ. My phone has GPS, so I communicated coordinates to Center (clumsily--I'm not used to radio communications--but she got it).
And then Alain and our subject, Eric, came marching down the trail, followed shortly thereafter by Joe and Dave. I started to breathe easier then. (I'd gotten a little worried when Joe told Center that there were four people needing to be flown out--when in fact there were five of us, with Eric.) It's always good to be in company.
By 10:30 J.F. had arrived with his four-seater helo, and he started ferrying us back to Bottcher's Gap. So very nice not to have to drag ourselves the 9 miles back--because it probably would have taken us 9 hours, as opposed to 9 minutes.
So: this view--it's from the Pat Springs LZ, looking toward the ocean. Bottcher's Gap is to the right, behind that first ridge. The landscape here is rugged, challenging. Our 9-mile hike involved two grueling uphills, and then a lot of down (which: think of the reverse if the blessed bird hadn't spirited us back to the truck). I may have "suffered," but to be in this country always fills my soul. At night, in daylight. (During the night, I'll just mention: the rain yesterday had left big drops of water on all the vegetation, and whatever light there was--moonlight, lamplight--would send those droplets shimmering, making the trees and shrubs into ghost trees, ghost shrubs. It was stunning.)
By 11:15 we were out and headed to a revivifying brunch in Carmel. Coffee, frittata, good company. Life is good.

Tonight, major league baseball's all stars will take to the field at Yankee Stadium. It will be one of the last big events held at the stadium, before it's torn down and the new Yankee Stadium is erected.
Some time in the past few years, my love of the game has dissipated. There was a time when my life was ruled by the Yankees schedule, when I lived, breathed and slept baseball. I have the most wonderful memories of Yankee Stadium and I'll be sorry to see it go.
This is my baseball story. I wrote it in March of 2003. It's one of my favorite stories to tell and I'm ever so grateful for the opportunity I had to spend so much time inside Yankee Stadium.
So, I have a baseball story for you.
It was the summer of '86. I had gone back to college the previous spring after an extended hiatus. 21 credits crammed into one semester after not being in school for a while was exhausting, so I passed on taking any summer classes. I was working nights at the time and thought I would spend my summer days sleeping until noon and lounging around the house. And then my Dean made me an offer I couldn't refuse - a summer job that would entail driving to The Bronx every morning, not getting home until midnight most nights, working a few weekends, all for no pay except a few college credits.
I almost laughed at him until he explained who I would be working for. The New York Yankees. Not as a hot dog vendor or ticket-taker. I would be working inside the vaunted walls of Yankee Stadium. Hell, I would have paid them to let me have that job.
I was to spend my days as an editorial assistant for Yankee Magazine, cropping pictures, proofreading stories and doing advertising layout for the magazine. At night, if the Yankees were on a homestand, I would stay for the games and run errands. If I wasn't needed I was welcome to stay for the games, anyhow.
I spent a lot of time that humid summer in the cool confines of the archives room, poring through photos of Yogi Berra and Joe Dimaggio, reading scorecards from games played long ago and generally living in a baseball time warp. The room was stuffed with trophies and plaques and mementos of the greatest baseball team that ever existed. And here was all this history, all this fame right at my fingertips. Ticket stubs, game programs, yellowed articles and dusty photographs were my companions that summer. Each time I left the room - usually after a futile search for whatever memorabilia or picture I was sent for - my fingers would be coated with the dust and grime of the legacy of legends.
I watched plenty of games from the press box. Sometimes I helped keep the scorecard, sometimes I just chatted with reporters or players who were on the injured list and joined the press to watch the game. I ate lunch in the third base seats, legs stretched out, sun beating down and Yankee Stadium seemingly to myself. I parked in the player's lot, sometimes walking in with the players themselves. I was the original George Costanza.
Late that August the pennant race was heating up and the summer nights were cooling down. I knew my days as a part of the New York Yankees staff were drawing to a close. In a way, I was relieved that I wouldn't have to make that miserable morning drive on the Grand Central anymore. But I hated give up the perks of a job where I mingled with Don Mattingly and had my name in the Yankee Magazine.
It was close to my last night there when I was invited to watch a game from the General Manager's office. There I was, in this huge office full of baseball impresarios, sharing drinks and glad-handing each other. I stood quietly in the corner, too overwhelmed by the presence of baseball greats to move out of the spot.
A Yankee employee I had become friendly with dragged me over to the huge picture window that overlooked the playing field of Yankee Stadium. I was watching the game from an office behind home plate, surveying the game as if I owned the team. I looked at the outfield bleachers where I had sat so many times before. I was mesmerized.
My friend excused himself to go get a drink and I stayed at the window, watching the game.
Then a voice from beside me, "Great view, isn't it?"
I looked up to see Mickey Mantle standing next to me, grinning. I nodded, unable to speak.
