None of your namby-pamby high-level programming languages - nor even assembler. Coding was done in Octal with a logic diagram to hand. Programmers (who might also act as operators and maintenance engineers) wore white coats in the machine room. During graveyard shift (when the bosses weren't around) was when the real work got done, because that was when you could have an ash-tray by your elbow on the console and serious debugging could take place.

Notice the cabinet full of tubes in the background - this was but a small part of the full complement.

MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) was measured in hours - or days if you were lucky.

The status of humans has evolved from social creatures to data producing creatures. Everything we do leaves a data-trace. The accumulation of data from a lot of people, also known as the study of big data can bring commercial profit, but also a social profit if the information is used to generate conclusions or programs that can help society. In the same time, almost everyone is now a user connected to the internet. At every moment, every user generates data that can pe seen by companies, internet service providers or other people. How can people realize which informations are good to giveaway and which are the ones to guard?

We are going to talk about the double sided sword of data in May in Brașov under the umbrella "Friendly Fire – Make Data Love Not Data War". We are organizing a workshop dedicated to journalists, activists, sociologists, programmers. During the workshop we aim to develop a mini-documentary and some narrative products that explore the issue of transparency versus privacy. The results of the workshop are going to be presented during a conference open to the public, that is going to take place on May 13th, at Centrul Multicultural al Universității Transilvania. Centrul Cultural German from Brașov has invited Berliner Gazette to facilitate this event and document it via a film.

Advice to programmers.

If you find yourself displaying the age of the patient, and a statement conditional upon the age of the patient, on the same screen, in the same window, and relying on the user to decide whether it is applicable to this patient, then you should investigate other areas of work.

Soon, please.

Kickstarting Volunteers: Getting stuff done with nothing

The first talk on at the Shopfront was mine. I made a deliberate decision to go first for a number of reasons: Get it over with; I was ready; I wanted the rest of the day to listen to the other talks.

I chose to read the talk from the world lightest, thinest laptop - no cables required. In other words I read it from paper. Why? Well when everyone goes Hi-tech, I go Lo-tech. All I need is a bit of paper, some light. I don't even need an audience.

I made the short title up straight away to let everyone know an immediate application of the talk. Easy to understand and say.

I started by going down to the Shopfront, picked a spot in the light, marked out my standpoint - I tend to walk when I talk so placing 2 markers either side keeps me in 1 spot. Had a chat to a few people who came down first. Then talked.

I'd timed the talk over about 5 times in practice to make sure it was < 20 minutes. It was about 15 minutes in all.

The images you see here are by @dan who really did a great job transcribing my major points into pictures. I didn't realise he'd done this till lunchtime till I started taking shots upstairs. Thanks Dan.

I first read out some keywords on what the talk was about, some quick concepts then read the talk.

The intro explaining what the talk is about. The objectives.

Point 1 Emotion

Emotions effect the way we make decisions. Emotions come in many forms as we react to stress. Each person reacts slightly differently. Limiting your emotional reaction, lets you move forward to make decisions. It's a trait that only you can control. Some sort of control is an advantage over none. No control over you emotions can let fear control you.

Fear is by far the most damaging emotion I can think of. Fear paralyses you into in-action. In-action is not only counter productive but it's also the fastest way to sabotage yourself. Fear is also contagious. If you are

fearful, it has a nasty habit of rubbing-off onto others. I don't know the solution to avoiding or controlling fear but I do know you should be aware it exists. You should try to negate it's side effects. The better control you have over fear, the more effective you can be.

The chipKIT PGM is designed to work with the MPLAB® and MPLAB X development environments available from Microchip. This allows the chipKIT boards, for example, to be used as a more traditional microcontroller development platform using the professional tools available from Microchip. While the PICkit™3 programmer can generate programming voltages needed to program all Microchip PIC devices, the chipKIT PGM can only program devices that are programmable with 3.3V programming voltage. Further, the PICkit3 can source a small amount of current to provide power to some boards being programmed. The chipKIT PGM does not provide power to the board being programmed.
