Title page from the theatre programme for a production of the operetta "Rose Marie" at the Ritz Cinema, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in October 1964.
Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Rose Marie" played at the Ritz Cinema in Keighley for six nights (and a Saturday matinee) from Monday 19th to Saturday 24th October 1964. It had music by Rudolf Friml and Herbert Stothart, and lyrics by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was produced by Anthony Haigh, the musical director was Arthur B. Mitchell and the choreographer was Irene Ogden.
This was the second time Keighley Amateurs had staged "Rose Marie", the first time being nearly thirty years earlier in February 1936.
The story starts out in the Canadian Rockies at a hotel where Rose Marie La Flamme (played by Audrey Hutchinson) and pioneer Jim Kenyon (Peter J. Wild) have fallen in love, much to the disapproval of Rose Marie's brother, Emile (Tony Cross). The hotel is run by Lady Jane (Janet Chadwick) who is torn between two suitors. Native Canadian Wanda (Joan Lund) murders her husband, Blackeagle (Brian Middleton), but blames Jim who flees to prove his innocence. Rose Marie reluctantly gives Jim up and consents to marry Edward Hawley (Michael Kennedy) in Quebec, when Wanda admits her crime and Rose Marie and Jim are reunited. Probably the most famous song from the musical is the 'Indian Love Call'.
Other members of the cast included Keith W. Ingham, Keith Marsden, and Louise Hindle.
