Back cover from the theatre programme for a production of "Annie Get Your Gun" at the Hippodrome Theatre, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in October 1952. This page includes an advert for Timothy Taylor's prize-winning ales, brewed at Knowle Spring Brewery.
Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Annie Get Your Gun" played at the Hippodrome Theatre in Keighley for six nights (and a Saturday matinee) from Monday 13th October 1952. The musical had lyrics and music by Irving Berlin, on the book by Herbert and Dorothy Fields. The audience were probably familiar with the musical as the MGM film version had only come out in the UK almost exactly two years earlier. The KAODS production was produced and directed by Douglas T. Bailey, with musical director R. Lewis Scargill.
The story is loosely based on the life of real-life sharpshooter Annie Oakley. Annie (played by Marian Walker) and her brother Jake (Dennis Crocker) meet up with 'Buffalo Bill' (Frederic W. Pye) and his Wild West Show when it visits Cincinnati. Annie's sharpshooting skills attract Bill's attention and he signs her up for the show. Annie falls in love with fellow performer Frank Butler (Edwin Smith), whose position in the show she is inadvertently usurping, leading Frank to leave the show. Indian Chief Sitting Bull (Leonard M. Stockdale) finances the show on a European tour (which, in the real world, included Keighley in its itinerary!) which is a financial disaster. Ultimately Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show combines with the show of Pawnee Bill (John H. Crabtree), which has recruited Frank. Annie and Frank settle their professional rivalry and reunite.
The show also starred Alan Shuttleworth, Frank Hopkinson, Norman Raistrick, Geoffrey Rundle, Marjorie J. Riley, Elsie Greenwell, Keith Marsden, Jean Sellars, Jesse G. Hamshaw, Anne Irving, Mary Wade, F. Bottomley, J. Street, L. Waite, J. D. Lee, A. Ridding, Janet Ogden, Eric S. Butterfield, Arthur Hague, N. Moulding, J. Derek Lee and Gwenda Binns. The dancing mistress was Irene Ogden.
The 40-page programme was printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. of High Street, Keighley. It measures approximately 188 mm by 246 mm. The programme was part of an anonymous donation given in 2022.

I have the job of scanning football programmes for sale in the family business (visit www.bubbletronics.co.uk). I thought that they might have a wider interest. Further, I discovered a Flickr group dedicated to them!
The programme (LFSP) is a four-year programme (2014 – 2017), designed to improve the livelihoods and food security of people living in rural areas by kick starting the rural economy.
The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), with a total investment of £ 45 million (USD 72 million), targets Zimbabwe’s smallholder farmers with the objective of reducing poverty through increased incomes for smallholder farmers.
The programme will actively address the specific constraints that small-holder farmers - particularly women and youth - face in raising the productivity of their farms and participating in markets.
The combined goal of the programme is to contribute to poverty reduction through increased incomes and improved food security and nutrition.

As this was 'only' an open-to-centre meeting, riders from beyond the Southern Centre ACU specify membership of an appropriate club. Vic Eastwood is with Mortimer, but Dave Curtis - from Bicester - and Chris Horsfield - from Stratford - become members of the organising Reading Ace club. Did they join on the day?
NB [ 1 ] - future sidecar specialist John Turner is number 87 on a 250cc Ariel, no doubt built by dad Bill.
NB [ 2 ] - First race of the day has 43 entries, and they would be lined up across the middle of the top straight, not a separate start area, for a dead engine getaway.

Sighet Memorial Museum, part of the Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance (Memorialul Victimelor Comunismului şi al Rezistenţei), was created on the basis of the former Sighet prison in 1993, restoration was completed in 2000. Each prison cell became a museum room, presenting the chronology and the different aspects of the totalitarian system in Communist Romania. We visited the museum in August 2015.
Máramarosszigeti börtönmúzeum, a kommunizmus romániai áldozatainak emlékhelye. A múzeumot 1993-ban alapították, az épület felújítása 2000-re fejeződött be. Az egyes cellákban mutatják be a kommunizmus történetét és egyes aspektusait. 2015. augusztusában jártunk a családdal, észak-erdélyi kirándulásunk alkalmával.
Sighet Prison was built in 1897 by the Austro-Hungarian authorities, on the occasion of the “First Magyar Millennium”. After 1918, it functioned as a prison for common criminals. After 1945, the repatriation of former prisoners and deported persons from the Soviet Union was done through Sighet. In August 1948 it became a place of imprisonment for a group of students, pupils and peasants from Maramures, some of whom still live in Sighet. On 5 and 6 May 1950 over one hundred dignitaries from the whole country were brought to the Sighet penitentiary (former ministers, academics, economists, military officers, historians, journalists, politicians), some of them convicted to heavy punishments, others not even judged. The majority were more than 60 years old. In October-November 1950, 45-50 bishops and Greek-Catholic and Roman-Catholic priests were transported to Sighet. The penitenciary was considered a "special work unit", known under the name of "Danube colony", but in reality was a place of extermination for the country's elites and at the same time a safe place, not possible to escape from, the frontier of the Soviet Union being less than two kilometres away. The prisoners were kept in unwholesome conditions, miserably fed, and stopped from lying down during the day on the beds in the unheated cells. They were not allowed to look out of the windows (those who disobeyed were punished by being forced to sit in the "black" and "grey", lock-up type cells, with no light). Finally, shutters were placed on the windows, so that only the sky was visible. Humility and ridicule were part of the extermination programme. In 1955, following the Geneva Convention and the admission of communist Romania (RPR) to the UN, some pardons were granted. Some of the political prisoners in Romanian prisons were set free and some transferred to other places, while others were kept under house arrest At Sighet, out of around 200 prisoners, 52 had died. The prison once again became an ordinary law one. However, political prisoners continued to appear in the following years, and many were kept secretly in the local psychiatric hospital. In 1977, the prison was closed, and the buildings were turned into a broom factory and salt warehouse, finally becoming an abandoned ruin.
7th October 2019. IAPI SMASH well-being programme launch in Venue 35 (formally La Stampa). Photo: Aidan Oliver
The SMASH programme will provide 24/7 support on mental well-being. This employment assistance programme (EAP) will also provide financial and legal advice, career coaching and parenting support services to our highly skilled workforce.
IAPI is delighted to be bringing this programme to our members thanks to the patronage of TABS (The Advertising Benevolent Society).
“TABS has been working behind the scenes of the industry for over 60 years helping those who have fallen on hard times but we feel it is time to be more visible and relevant to a younger cohort of the workforce. We’re delighted with the prominence that IAPI is giving this programme and believe it will be of huge benefit to their members as they look to support and nurture the extraordinary talent in the industry.” Allen Kiernan, Financial Director, BBDO Dublin and Board Member, TABS.
Mental health challenges are on the increase and the World Health Organisation predicts that depression will be the leading global burden of disease by 2030. Ireland ranks in the top 10 countries worldwide in relation to numbers of the population affected by anxiety disorders (WHO, 2017) with depression, anxiety and stress being the most common difficulties.
Armed with this information and with the knowledge that our industry is already one of the most stressful to work in, TABS recognise that instead of shying away from this fact, we need to face it head-on and do something about it. The vast majority of those under 30 in the industry are not aware of the support TABS provides and given that they represent 47% of the workforce, this needed to be addressed. TABS now sponsor the SMASH programme for all IAPI members.
The programme is being managed by Spectrum Health, who were chosen by TABS after a comprehensive search for the best partner.
The launch will take place in Venue 35 (formally La Stampa) with doors open from 5.30pm. The launch will kick off with a keynote speech from Niall Breslin at 6pm.
Niall Breslin AKA Bressie is an award-winning musician, former Westmeath Gaelic footballer, former Leinster Rugby under 21 player, a mental health advocate and a best selling author. He is a passionate speaker and campaigner leading a new kind of conversation around mental health.
Following Niall's talk, three advertising professionals will share their own personal stories relating to their experiences of maintaining and developing their own well-being.
