The Civil Society Programme took place from Thursday 14 May through Friday 15 May. The Programme in 2015 introduced a new approach to the flagship event of the EBRD engagement with civil society.
For the first time, CSOs had the chance to shape the Civil Society Programme through a social media consultation. In addition, CSOs were invited to submit proposals for the organisation of discussion panels dedicated to issues of specific interest to the Caucasus region and stakeholders in the EBRD.

The story is set in a Japanese Tea House run by Chinaman Wun-Hi (played by Ernest Marsden). A troupe of Geisha are attached to the Tea House, including the celebrated O Mimosa San (Mabel Rothera). A party of English sailors from H. M. S. 'The Turtle' and English ladies from the yacht of Lady Constance Wynne (Gladys Broster) visit the Tea House. Officer Reginald Fairfax (Harry Shackleton) falls for the charms of Mimosa, despite being engaged to Molly Seamore (Ethel Bird). But Provincial Governor Marquis Imari (W. Bruce Johnston) also has his heart set on Mimosa and threatens to close down the Tea House and auction off the geisha. When this is carried out Lady Constance wins the bidding for Mimosa but Molly has disguised herself as a geisha and ends up being bought by the Marquis. Later at the Marquis' Palace, his wedding to Molly is about to take place when Lady Constance, Reginald and others from the English party arrive and set about sorting out the confusion. Reginald and Molly are reunited, the Marquis ends up with Tea House interpreter Juliette (Annie Battle), and Mimosa ends up with her intended, Captain Katana (Arthur G. Ramsden).
The show also starred Mary Stell, Marion Holmes, Maud Holmes, Agnes Battle, Doris Capper, Annie Watson, Nancy Wilkinson, Florence McDonnell, J. Louis Midgley, Harry Ambler, Dick Bird, Norah B. Holmes, and Frank Shuttleworth.
The Keighley News of Saturday 27th September 1919 reviewed the production: "A word of commendation is due to the members of the Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society on the way in which they took in hand the task of reorganising their affairs and on the thoroughness with which the work was done to enable 'The Geisha' to be presented at the Keighley Hippodrome this week... The selection of 'The Geisha' proved a happy one. Light and catchy music, opportunities for dainty and vivacious acting by the ladies, and a breezy, nautical touch - all in keeping with present-day demand - are the characteristics of this popular comic opera."
"Evidence of excellent support was forthcoming immediately the booking of seats commenced, and it was obvious at an early date that the financial success of the affair was assured. It was therefore with extreme gratification that the committee were able to announce at the close of Monday night's performance that they had achieved a first night record and that in view of the initial success a performance would be given the Saturday afternoon in addition to those announced for each evening of the week."
The 40-page programme was printed by Wadsworth & Co. of Russell Street, Keighley. It measures approximately 195mm by 125mm. The programme was part of an anonymous donation given in 2022.

Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Annie Get Your Gun" played at the Hippodrome Theatre in Keighley for six nights (and a Saturday matinee) from Monday 13th October 1952. The musical had lyrics and music by Irving Berlin, on the book by Herbert and Dorothy Fields. The audience were probably familiar with the musical as the MGM film version had only come out in the UK almost exactly two years earlier. The KAODS production was produced and directed by Douglas T. Bailey, with musical director R. Lewis Scargill.
The story is loosely based on the life of real-life sharpshooter Annie Oakley. Annie (played by Marian Walker) and her brother Jake (Dennis Crocker) meet up with 'Buffalo Bill' (Frederic W. Pye) and his Wild West Show when it visits Cincinnati. Annie's sharpshooting skills attract Bill's attention and he signs her up for the show. Annie falls in love with fellow performer Frank Butler (Edwin Smith), whose position in the show she is inadvertently usurping, leading Frank to leave the show. Indian Chief Sitting Bull (Leonard M. Stockdale) finances the show on a European tour (which, in the real world, included Keighley in its itinerary!) which is a financial disaster. Ultimately Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show combines with the show of Pawnee Bill (John H. Crabtree), which has recruited Frank. Annie and Frank settle their professional rivalry and reunite.
The show also starred Alan Shuttleworth, Frank Hopkinson, Norman Raistrick, Geoffrey Rundle, Marjorie J. Riley, Elsie Greenwell, Keith Marsden, Jean Sellars, Jesse G. Hamshaw, Anne Irving, Mary Wade, F. Bottomley, J. Street, L. Waite, J. D. Lee, A. Ridding, Janet Ogden, Eric S. Butterfield, Arthur Hague, N. Moulding, J. Derek Lee and Gwenda Binns. The dancing mistress was Irene Ogden.
The 40-page programme was printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. of High Street, Keighley. It measures approximately 188 mm by 246 mm. The programme was part of an anonymous donation given in 2022.

The Asia Foundation launched a new programme today to enhance women’s participation in the political and electoral processes ahead of next year’s Presidential and Provincial Council elections in Afghanistan. Women make half of Afghanistan’s population and their increased participation in elections makes its outcome more credible. The United Nations believes that Afghan-led and Afghan-managed 2014 elections are at the very heart of a credible, inclusive, transparent, and sustainable political transition. “A smooth and widely accepted transfer of politic! al authority is critical for future stability [of Afghanistan],” said the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan in a news release on 27 August.

The London East Asia Film Festival's programme launch was held at Electric Cinema in Notting Hill on 12th September.
We are incredibly excited to have announced our programme. The Fortress is being screened as our Opening Gala at Odeon Leicester Square as an international premiere. We are thrilled to say that there will be a Q+A with Director Hwang Dong-hyuk and Actor Lee Byung-hun! Our Closing Gala, Outrage Coda, directed by Takeshi Kitano is a must see, action-packed film which we are honoured to be screening at our festival this year. LEAFF’s Festival Director, Hyejung Jeon, gave an inspiring speech at the beginning of our press launch to start out festival season off with a bang.

Programme for the play 'The Bubble', by Leonard Irwin, being staged by touring repertory company The Penguin Players at the Hippodrome and Queen's Theatre in Keighley for one week from Monday 22nd June 1953.
Players in the company included Michael Beint, Sylvia Bidmead, John Carter, John Hickman, John Ingram, Louise Ralston, Joan Raven, Celia Ryder, Franklyn Scott, Elma Soiron, Monty Vane-Tempest, and Peter Wyatt. The play was produced by John Ingram and the manager of the players was Kathleen Willis. Linda Dale accompanied proceedings on the piano.
The programme also includes adverts for the Regal Milk Bar (proprietor J. W. Dutton) on North Street; Lawkholme Taxis; Ernest P. Angus Ltd. (Austin dealer) of Granby Garage, Riddlesden; Shackleton and Sagar's Minerals of Spring Bank, Ingrow; the cocktail bar at the Victoria Hotel, Cavendish Street; Autowrex Bfd of Bradford; A. Lord & Co. (modern furnishers) of High Street; Jack Hey (joiner and undertaker) of Albert Yard; Fred Smith (grocers) of Church Street; John W. Laycock Ltd. (fireplace specialists) of North Street; Timothy Taylor's prize ales ("for men of the North"); Central Taxis of Bow Street; Harry Stowell (plumber and sanitary engineer) of Bradford Road, Riddlesden; Hammonds United Breweries Ltd.; and Windser Pottery (H. Brearley and Sons) of North Street.
The 1950s was a turbulent decade in the history of the Hippodrome and Queen's Theatre in Keighley. Long-time Managing Director Francis Laidler (who also owned the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford) died in 1955 and was succeeded by his widow Gwladys. Television was providing a significant challenge to theatre-going by the middle of the decade, and the Hippodrome had to try more extreme forms of entertainment to draw in the crowds. But to no avail, and the theatre finally closed its doors in 1956, before being demolished in 1961 to make way for the new town centre's multi-storey car park.
The item was donated to Keighley and District Local History Society by Tim Neal in 2022. It is held in the History Society's physical archive.
This week’s launch of the council’s new £1.5m West Croydon Investment Programme (WCIP) significantly expands the range of support available to new businesses in the area.
The programme reinforces the authority’s commitment to enterprise and the local economy and was announced at the opening of the new ‘Enterprise Hub’ in London Road.
The hub, part-funded by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is based at the offices of Croydon Voluntary Action (CVA). Its opening was attended by Deputy Mayor of London for business and enterprise, Kit Malthouse, alongside Croydon cabinet members, councillors Vidhi Mohan and Steve O’Connell.
Guests had the chance to see how they can benefit from a share of nearly £2m of funding which is already starting to help create jobs, improve skills, boost the local economy, support communities, and improve the environment.
Visitors to the event learnt about the projects, part funded by the Mayor of London, that form the core of the investment programme.
These six individual schemes each have specific objectives but together form a solid foundation to promote economic regeneration:
‘Entrepeneurs of the Future’ is run in partnership with the Prince’s Trust to support young people looking to set up new businesses, and the ‘Local Employment Creation’ initiative offers wage subsidies to help businesses grow through taking on local people.
‘Root and Branch Support’ focuses on helping young people who are leaving school without the prospects of further training or a job, and the ‘Community Connectors’ scheme is building a network of local people and community groups with shared interests and common goals.
Making West Croydon safer and cleaner is the task of a dedicated officer who will co-ordinate both crime reduction and improvements to environmental standards in the area, and the new Enterprise Hub itself has been opened as a focal point for business opportunities.
Also on display, was information about significant public realm and building front improvements due to take place in the area. Altogether, the total investment is over £4.6million.
The council’s local £1m business rate relief scheme was also promoted, with new businesses able to claim a discount of up to 65 per cent.
Deputy Mayor for Business and Enterprise, Kit Malthouse, said: ‘We are determined to ensure that Croydon’s potential is unleashed, to create jobs and attract investment and that is why the Mayor is spending £23million to improve local facilities including transport links and support enterprise. I am delighted to see the fruits of our cash injection through fantastic projects such as this excellent new hub set to provide practical support for entrepreneurial people in the local area.’
Cabinet member for communities and economic development, Councillor Vidhi Mohan said: “The community’s views have been central to what the WCIP includes and this event has shown that by working together we can continue to boost the growth and prosperity of the area and create opportunities for individuals and businesses in the area.”
The West Croydon Investment Programme is funded by The Mayor of London and has been developed by the GLA, Croydon Council and a variety of other partner agencies.

Les programmations du Hellfest sont les listes des groupes ayant participé au Hellfest, un festival annuel spécialisé dans les musiques extrêmes qui se déroule à Clisson, en Loire-Atlantique (France).
Le Hellfest, également appelé Hellfest Summer Open Air, est un festival de musique français spécialisé dans les musiques extrêmes, annuellement organisé au mois de juin à Clisson en Loire-Atlantique. The Civil Society Programme took place on Wednesday 11 May and Thursday 12 May and provided an opportunity for dialogue between civil society and EBRD staff, senior management, the President and Board Directors. It was an occasion for civil society stakeholders to learn more about the Bank and discuss issues of interest and concern regarding the EBRD’s policies and investment projects.
The Programme also featured multi-stakeholder roundtable sessions on key strategic themes related to the role of civil society as an important actor in transition and development processes. Special features of the Civil Society Programme 2016 were discussions on:
•25 years of Transition - The Role of Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia
•Engaging civil society to promote transparent procurement
•EBRD’s Strategy for the Promotion of Gender Equality (2016-2020): the role of civil society
•Inclusion through skills and innovatiom
In addition, a panel organised by the youth organisation AIESEC looked at the role of youth in shaping the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
25 years of Transition: The Role of Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Civil society, operating in the space between public and private sectors, has played an important role in socio-political and economic transition processes around the world, including the EBRD’s traditional countries of operations. In 25 years since the establishment of the EBRD, civil society’s contribution to transition has varied across the post-communist transition region. In some countries, the work of civil society organisations (CSOs) has contributed to more democratic political systems and more open market based economies as a ‘reputational actor’ performing a ‘watchdog’ function and as a generator of ‘social capital’ necessary to sustain the change process through the difficult early years. In other countries, the focus of CSOs has been on providing a variety of social services particularly to disadvantaged and vulnerable people negatively affected by the transition process. Many civil society actors have been operating in restrictive regulatory environments, and have relied heavily on international donor funding.
What has been civil society’s input into promoting good governance, sustainable development and economic inclusion in EBRD’s traditional region over the past few decades? What are the key lessons learned, from both its successes and failures that can be applied to other countries embarking on a transition process? What steps could be taken to increase the role of civil society in promoting positive changes in societies and economies?
The discussion looked back at the key achievements and setbacks of the civil society sector in contributing to transition since the Bank’s establishment. It also reflected upon the challenges ahead for civil society in building well-governed, sustainable and inclusive economies and societies.
