25 volunteers showed up for a fun evening of appreciation on Feb. 9. Volunteers gave close to 3,000 hours in 2016 and helped with completion of 30 projects and helping in the Seedling Tree Nursery.
Meet the New Tech Squad: Central Campus Expands Its Student Apprenticeship Program Across DMPS - Ten DMPS Students Are Getting Paid to Power the District's Tech Support in Year Two.
Des Moines, IA — Central Campus is thrilled to announce that the Central Campus Technology Apprenticeship has launched its second year — and it's growing. Ten students from across Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) are now working as paid tech support apprentices stationed at their home high schools and at Central Campus, solving real problems, building real skills, and earning real paychecks.
This one-of-a-kind program, created by Central Campus Principal Kelsie Mouchka and Work-Based Learning Coordinator Jennifer Scott and championed in the classroom by Information Technology teacher and program mentor Mike Tierney, proudly positions DMPS as both the registered apprenticeship sponsor and employer — because the best talent for the job was already right here in our own classrooms. After a successful first year with seven apprentices, the program has expanded to ten students representing six schools across DMPS.
Program Highlights Include:
•Hands-On Tech Support Experience: Apprentices work alongside district tech professionals as mentors, troubleshooting devices, resolving tickets, and keeping their schools running smoothly.
•Competitive Compensation and Growth Opportunities: Students earn a competitive wage with gradual increases and are among the youngest contributors to IPERS, Iowa's public employee retirement system — building financial security from day one.
•Enhanced Tech Support Across DMPS: Each apprentice serves as a dedicated, school-based tech resource, improving response times and expanding support capacity across the district.
•Career Preparation and Resume Building: Apprentices earn industry-recognized certifications and gain professional experience that sets them apart in any future career in IT, cybersecurity, or engineering.
What makes this program truly special is the culture it creates. Students consistently describe their mentors as patient, encouraging, and respectful — treating them not as students, but as colleagues. "My mentor is flexible and kind, and I feel like I'm really learning," shared one apprentice. Another noted the unique thrill of the role: "Rather than teachers always being the ones to help me, I am now helping the teachers."
"Students are not just learning — they are leading," said Kelsie Mouchka, Principal of Central Campus. "They are solving real problems, supporting their schools, and showing what's possible when we give young people the chance to step up. This program proves that career-connected learning isn't just good for students — it's good for all of us." The apprenticeship continues to demonstrate that workforce development and student empowerment aren't separate goals — they're the same goal.
