On September 8th, 2014, we held a gathering at the Witherspoon Building to launch our new Brain Trust donor program and to thank our supporters and to release new, exciting data linking our program to increases in student test scores. At the event, guests were invited to participate in a photo booth with bubbles, to create a mural illustrating the ‘creative classroom’, and members of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony performed throughout the evening.
The Brain Trust program provides incentives for all levels of donors starting at only $10. Follow this link to see all of the ways in which you can participate in this new program and support us in our goal to provide creative classroom experiences for all K-8 students in the Portland, Oregon area - not just those in affluent neighborhoods and high-performing schools at bit.ly/JoinTheBrainTrust.
We would like to thank all of our donors, supporters and volunteers, and a huge thank you to our event sponsors, who made this gathering possible:

As many of you may know, my mom had been battling breast cancer for several years. She took ill in September, and I went up to visit. I was glad I did, for I was able to spend just a tad shy of a week with her before she left this earth.
This is the inside of the program I designed using one of my photos for her services.
Since my mom loved my photos and was always happiest receiving homemade things from her 5 children and numerous grandchildren, I was honored to create the memorial pamphlets and slideshow.
I love my mom dearly and she is already greatly missed.
The Serenity Prayer was her favorite....

The Lakeshore Foundation brought the girls in for a quick swim lesson, as many of the ladies have never swam before. A few of them braved the waters and learned some great new skills while growing more comfortable in the pool.

Visitors attended a day-long studio workshop by independent instructor, artist, and conservator Corey D’Augustine. Participants were introduced to working in abstraction and expressionism through employing the painting techniques of the period, drawing inspiration from artists such as Robert Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Kazimir Malevich, Vasily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig and Franz Marc. As part of the workshop, participants visited The Great Upheaval: Modern Art From the Guggenheim Collection, 1910–1918 on view February 4–June 1, 2011 to view works of art in person, then moved to the studio to paint a small canvas based on these works.
To register for Corey D’Augustine’s upcoming Kandinsky studio workshop on Nov 5, visit www.guggenheim.org/courses.

The Community Boat Project students, led by Captains Wayne Chimenti and MB Armstrong and veteran teacher Marci Van Cleve, launched the fourth boat built in the program, the 32-foot sailing vessel EPIC.
The Community Boat Project is a unique partnership between the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding (the lead organization), Port Townsend School District (#50), Chimacum School District (#49), 4-H/Washington State University (WSU), and the Puget Sound Voyaging Society.
You can see what the Shop is doing at their website, here: communityboats.wordpress.com/
It is an "all ages, all volunteers" community-oriented non-profit organization specializing in free, accredited programs for high school students.
Intergenerational maritime education is the mission of the Community Boat Shop.
The Shop strives to give youth a "sense of place" by connecting them to the environment, the economy, and the people of the Olympic Peninsula.
In short, Community Boat Project volunteers --build-- large voyaging boats with high school students - one large boat per year - while the non-profit Puget Sound Voyaging Society, which runs at the same time, and then through the summer, teaches high school students how to -- use-- those same boats.
The program's philosophy is centered on five principles.
Social Justice: Quality educational opportunities should be available to all. Therefore all Community Boatshop programs are free to public school youth or sliding scale that matches the needs of any group. Community Boatshop programs are open to all.
Community Supported Education: Education should be community driven. The Local Community drives what is important to learn. Community Boatshop programs are funded by donations of materials and money from the community, and are run on 100% volunteer expertise and energy.
Experiential Learning: Learning is best done through hands-on, real meaningful experiences.
Environmental Sustainability and Sensitivity: The environmental implications of all of Community Boatshop actions are considered, and the the best choice made for minimum impact.
Empowerment: There is a leader in every person.
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is located in Port Hadlock WA and is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school.
The School's mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts.

USAID’s Water and Conflict Toolkit for Programming, a document designed to help development practitioners gain a deeper understanding of the forces driving violence and instability related to water, was launched on February 24 at the Wilson Center. Written by USAID’s Office of Conflict Management and Mitigation, the Wilson Center, and Group W Inc., the toolkit provides guidance to development professionals not familiar with water and conflict dynamics, with the aim of developing more strategic and focused interventions.
To discuss how the toolkit resonates with their experiences were a bevy of water experts: Gidon Bromberg, 2008 TIME Magazine Environmental Hero and two-time recipient of the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship; Geoffrey Dabelko, Director of the Voinovich School's Environmental Studies Program at Ohio University and Senior Advisor to ECSP; Chris Kosnik, director of USAID’s Office of Water and a long-time development practitioner; Sandra Ruckstuhl, co-author of the toolkit and development and conflict expert; and Aaron Wolf, a renowned expert on transboundary water resources and political conflict and cooperation.
