have a library that meets at least basic standards?.
Shouldn't a 'World Class Institute' .
'world-class' institution..
Successive Vice~Chancellorsof this university have repeatedly proclaimed their desire to make JNU a .
However, students who know the functioningreality of the Libraries in JNU, including the Central L1brary of JNU are aware .
that their deplorable state is far from 'world class'. JNUSU demands answers on some pressing questions about the .
.
functioning of the Central Library, and the glaring inadequacies in various departmental libraries constituted with much-.
hyped 'special' grants .
Urgent need to improve availability of books in the Library, and to Democratise Book Purchasing .
The entire student community is well aware that new books (including multiple copies of latest editions) need to be .
procured as soon as possible. The paucity of required books is particularly bad in certain centres and schools-for .
instance foreign language books as well as books required by students studying 1n various Science schools are just not .
available. Moreover, the reference and textbook section. as well as journal section needs major revamping and new .
purchases. .
This perpetual problem of paucity ofbooks clearly needs a holistic solution. It is NOT just a question of purchasing .
books. it is equally a quest1on of purchasing the right kind of books. Therefore, one of our demands is that the entire .
process of book purchasing should be made more democratic and transparent. so that students and teachers are more .
.
actively involved in the process of selecting books for the library. The various forums available for the same-Library .
Purchasing Committee for instance-have to be rejuvenated and reactivated. Students' active representation and .
participation has to be ensured, if the required books are to be made available in the Library. .
Link the various departmentallibraries and the Central Library .
For quite some time now, the student commun1ty has been demanding more lmks between the departmental libraries and .
the Central Library-as of now, books available in the various departmental libraries are not even shown in the catalogue .
.
ofthe Central Library and students in other departments are not even aware that they are available in JNU. let alone being .
allowed to access them. .
.
Ensure access of physically Challenged students to the library .
The books and resources of the Central Library should be accessible to all. There is an urgent need to upgrade and .
expand the Helen Ketler Unit with more technical facilities, and more manpower. The Central Library also has .
to be made more PH Friendly. .
.
.
Extend timings of the library and basic facilities .
After repeated demands from JNUSU and the student community. th1s year the cyber library timings have been extended to 10 pm while exams are going on Also. laptop bags (only single ZIP bags) will be allowed from now on in the library. Extending the timings of the Library has been a long-standing demand of the student community, and it is extremely .
unfortunate that every year the JNUSU has to demand from the administration that the library timings be extended. Need for Additional infrastructure There is also an urgent need for additional infrastructure in the library-a separate structure for 24x7 Reading Hall has to be constructed, and also additional construction on both sides of the first floor for Cyber Library/Reading Halls and book .
stacks is required. The Cyber Library also has to be expended to the unused parts of 81h Floor. .
The Central Libraryis a central institution ofthis campus anda basic need ofthe student community. JNUSU calls upon the student body to join its struggle for ensuring greater accountabilityand betterfacilities in the Central Library. Towards this end, JNUSU has called an OPEN HOUSE tomorrow at SSS~I Committee Room -1 at 2.30pm .
with the Librarian, faculty members and students. We appeal to the student community to participate in the Open .
House in large numbers to share their concerns, problems and suggestions to make JNU library the way we want. .
