Today's airbrushed style pinup photo features Melissa in this salute to the WW2 Jeep! Answering a call from the US Army for automobile makers to replace the ageing WW1 vehicles in the face of the upcoming WW2 conflict, two different companies jumped into process. Only 11 days later, bids were received by Willys-Overland Motors, American Bantam, and eventually the Ford Motor Company. Bantam won the contract, but couldn't sustain production need for war and as such Willys and Ford were given the blueprints to develop and improve upon Bantam's design. Each company made their own version of the Bantam design in 1941 and began to produce their own models (Willys making the 'MA': 'M'ilitary model 'A' and Ford making the 'GP': 'G'eneral 'P'urpose). In mid-1941 the government decided to select one of the companies to produce their vehicle in order to standardize production. Willys won the contract after improving upon the earlier model and incorporating the best parts of the Bantam and Ford designs. The resulting vehicle was called the 'MB' (Military model B). When Willys couldn't keep up with the demand, Ford was asked to help produce the MBs which were then called GPW (General Purpose Willys). Willys produced over 360,000 MBs and ford produced over 280,000 GPWs. The Jeep would go on to be one of the most iconic vehicles of all time with post-war versions of the military Jeep being produced into the 1960s. You can still see some designs of the original Jeep in many of the current Jeep company models.

Near the end of the summer, I was asked by the publishers of Popular Science magazine to produce a visualization piece that explored the archive of their publication. PopSci has a history that spans almost 140 years, so I knew there would be plenty of material to draw from. Working with Mark Hansen, I ended up making a graphic that showed how different technical and cultural terms have come in and out of use in the magazine since it's inception.

ry fish processing is an ancient, cost-effective preservation method that removes moisture through sun-drying, salting, or smoking to inhibit microorganism growth and extend shelf life. The process typically involves cleaning, degutting, washing, and sometimes salting fish before laying them on racks, taking several days depending on weather and fish size.
The most common method, where fish are laid on raised bamboo racks (vertical or horizontal) in the sun.
Often combined with drying, this improves preservation and flavor, commonly used for larger fish.
Imparts flavor while drying the fish through heat.
Dehydration/Driers: Controlled environments like cabinet, tunnel, or solar tent dryers are used to ensure higher quality and better hygiene than open-sun drying

This performance was made after the opening of my current exhibition at the Lars Bolin gallery in Östersund, after hours with only the gallerist and photographer as participants / spectators.

starting to work on a series of stools based on our xylem system
first step, turn our 2d line based applet into 3d mesh. status: in process, threshold/smoothing issues
1. Image out of camera, 1/4 sec at f/1.8, WB 2700K.
2. White balance adjusted in UFRaw (Linux).
3. Red and Blue channels inverted in CS5 (channel mixer).
Image taken with unmodified Nikon D300s using Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G lens and Hoya R72 IR filter. In camera WB was 2700K, exp. 1/4 sec at f/1.8... ISO 800 Exp. Bias +5.
Image was moved to Linux for White balance and tint adjustment in UFRaw with GIMP. This is roughly the equivalent of Halogen correction.
Then moved to W7 for CS5 channel mixer, where red and blue channels were swapped for a more natural look. In Channel mixer, red channel, change red +100 to -100, green from 0 to +100 and blue from 0 to +100. Blue channel, change red from 0 to +100, green from 0 to +100, and blue from +100 to -100.

This is from a studio shoot with the entire cast of "The Baffling Adventures of Question-Mark Man" by Bottled Spider. A really fun show about superheroes...and punctuation. What's not to like? :-)
