Forensics: The First 48
Back for the second year, this clover college workshop will offer a Forensics Frenzy. The first forty‐eight hours of an investigation are key in determining the answers to the Who? What? When? Where? How? Time is very valuable and so is the information that will be provided in this session. Youth will use their investigative and problemsolving skills to solve a mock crime scene. Our son Adam Florin gave a fascinating talk about generative music at Algorithmic Art Assembly, hosted by Gray Area Art + Technology. He started with a quick demo of Patter, his music composition software, then took us on an illuminating journey through the many people and ideas which inspired him to create his cool freeform generative sequencer.
Brian Eno, who coined the phrase “generative music”, recently likened it to gardening -- but the material practice is just as much rooted in centuries of formal aesthetics, predictive statistics and industrial automation. How can we negotiate the tension between organic and and the mechanical in the algorithmic arts?
Adam has created some amazing digital tools and art exhibits in that space. It was great to hear what he's learned in this fascinating field, exploring the intersection of human and machine creativity. And to top it off, he gave this talk on his birthday, which was the best present of all!

Calibre:
I heard about Calibre (pronounced like "caliber") when it was
recommended by one of the Amazon Kindle technical support folk.
Evidently it has a very nice interface for managing the Kindle from
your computer. A slight amount of poking around told me it is free and
open source. Pretty nice, pretty nice. I decided to look a little
closer.
Oh. Wow.
Platforms: Windows, Apple, Linux. Or you can run it from a thumb
drive. Based in LInux, of course. They recommend some great resources,
including but not limited to Oxygen ( www.oxygen-icons.org/ )
and MobileRead ( www.mobileread.com/ ). As is true of most good
open source projects, they gladly share problemsolving and credit for
solutions.
It does all sorts of nifty things. Found a great book, but it isn't in
the right format for your ebook reader device? Calibre senses that and
automatically converts it before loading it to your device. That alone
is worth the price of admission, let me tell you! Custom metdata? No
problem. Download metadata? No problem. International sources or
multiple languages? No problem.
Oh there is so much more. Me, I watched the video, all ten minutes of
it, right up until the end where he said, "And if you're still
listening ..." It was worth it. And beyond what the application itself
can do to make your e-reading life easier (oh, yes, there's MORE),
there is a section of the site devoted to open ebooks, as in really
OPEN, free of digital rights management. Check this out.

This is the half of the dough that I will work with today. The rest went into the freezer. The volume seems to be a little greater than .5L.
I have never worked with a dough this wet before. I am estimating this is roughly between 70%-75% hydration.
I kneaded the entire mass of dough with a wet scraper for 5 minutes or so. I saw a big difference in it's smoothness and structure in the first couple minutes. After that I didn't see it coming into the malleable kind of doughs I'm familiar with but since I wasn't making progress I divided it into 2 parts, put them both in oiled tubs, left this one at room temp and put the other one into the freezer.
I will stretch & fold this dough at 20 minute intervals over the next hour. I'm interested in how that improves the structure and texture of the unbaked dough.

Our half-hour video played all day long in their Gray Box multimedia theater.
In the evening, we played a shorter version of the Flashbacks video at the Cowell Theatre. I'm very grateful to all our core team on this project: Matisse Enzer, Phyllis Florin, Ahmed Kabil, David Lawrence, Jim McKee, and Susan Ryan, to name but a few.
