Double smoked bacon, Kimchi, pickled garlic scrapes, white wine

Potato dumplings, cauliflower, roasted beets, beet jus

Foreground: Butterscotch ice cream with chocolate chip.

Although I'm not usually a fan of butterscotch, this ice cream was very good. Surprisingly, it was my favorite of the three flavors.

Middle: Banana rum raisin ice cream with black & white cookie. My friend commented, and I completely agreed, that this ice cream tasted just like banana-flavored Laffy Taffy. The rum was unfortunately back-seated to the strong banana flavor. The raisins were nice... I picked them out and left the rest.

Background: Cream cheese cinnamon with pistachio shortbread. I was expecting this to be my favorite. It was okay, but inconsistent throughout. In some parts, it was very watery and bland, in other parts, I'd get a sturdy dose of tangy goat cheese. I also had hoped for more cinnamon flavor. Overall, not bad, just not great.

The shortbreads were okay. My favorite by far was the chocolate chip.

Preserved raspberries, white chocolate, Michigan tart cherries, brandied cherries

Fried risotto balls with vanilla anglaise and chocolate sauce. Vanilla ice cream.

Notes: The outside was fried crispy like a beignet. The interior of the risotto balls were coconut flavored - I suspect it was a rice porridge/pudding fortified with coconut milk.

My first impression upon biting into the cake was: deep-fried Almond Joy. The inside was moist and sticky, like the coconut filling inside the candy bars.

I'm curious what type of rice they used to make these "risotto balls" with. The interior was very moist and gummy - specifically, just like glutinous rice - not at all like arborio rice traditionally used for making risotto.

Radiccio lettuce, balsamic vinegar, micro herbs

Seriously, I would love to cook in a kitchen like that, if only for one night.

Ginger Crisp apples, baked radish, beet vinaigrette, miso

Native Lobster Bisque, Drizzle of Cognac, "En Croute

Crispy pork taco with traditional accompaniments.

Notes: The shredded pork meat had been indeed fried crispy. There was still a bit of chew, and were still moist on the inside, but the outer shreds of the pork were nice and toasty-fried.

I don't know what "traditional accompaniments" to pork tacos are, but apparently, they consist of shredded cabbage, a few dices of tomato, black beans, guacamole and a liberal squirt of some creamy aioli. I think Dalzell over does the aioli - it's on everything, and a lot of it.

It was all very flavorful and good. The only improvement I would make to it if I were making it at home would be to spice it up a bit with some heat... and, of course, do without the aioli. The guacamole was silky enough of a treat.

Il Pesce

Salmon with braised peas and burnt butter sauce

The simple grilled salmon was another popular dish on our table. While it seemed a little underwhelming, everyone agreed that the fish was beautifully cooked, but the burnt butter sauce was a too subtle. I liked the braised peas with the distinctly buttery finish though.

Il Formaggio La Bouche

Julia got the cheese from the pre-theatre menu. It was described as a rich creamy ewe's milk cheese like a triple-cream brie. And it was! We both loved the slight musty flavour of the ewe's milk and the silky texture as it melted in your mouth.

A poster for the Mother's Day special at the Beat Hotel -- which is not a hotel but a restaurant, the Beat Brasserie -- in Harvard Square. I took Linda here for their Mother's Day brunch.
