"Rant Mode Engaged"

A few short months after the Royal Mail was privatised... price increases were announced. Oh what a surprise!

So, they sell off a profit making organisation which belonged to us all... and then we're charged more to use it.

It's their brazen, bare-faced cheek that gets me!

"Rant Over"

---------------------------------------

Update - BBC News 25-03-2014 - Royal Mail is planning to cut 1,600 roles as part of a drive to cut costs...

"Royal Mail's primary reason for existing is now about making profits rather than serving the nation," said Brian Scott, Unite officer for Royal Mail.

Elon Musk may have made history today.

The video feed cut out after the second stage went through some harmonic oscillations. In any case, the first stage worked wonderfully, and the rocket made it to space.

Update: "We did have a roll-control anomaly," Musk says of the second stage. Fate of the rocket remains unknown. Elon says the rocket may have re-entered the atmosphere prior to reaching the intended orbit. The rolling motion caused the second stage engine to shut down early. (further updates in comments below)

The rocket uses dynamic thrust control to stabilize the flight without fins. After the cowlings fell away, it went into a roll.

Info from SpaceX on the Falcon milestones: The Falcon 1 rocket will begin its journey to orbit, accelerating to 17,000 mph (25 times the speed of sound) in less than ten minutes. Designed from the ground up by SpaceX, Falcon 1 is a two stage rocket powered by liquid oxygen and purified, rocket grade kerosene. On launch day, Falcon 1 will launch into the history books for several notable reasons:

• It will be the first privately developed, liquid fueled rocket to reach orbit and the world's first all new orbital rocket in over a decade.

• The main engine of Falcon 1 (Merlin) will be the first all new American hydrocarbon engine for an orbital booster to be flown in forty years and only the second new American booster engine of any kind in twenty-five years.

• The Falcon 1 is the only rocket flying 21st century avionics, which require a small fraction of the power and mass of other systems.

• It will be the world's only semi-reusable orbital rocket apart from the Shuttle.

• Most importantly, Falcon 1, priced at $6.7 million, will provide the lowest cost per flight to orbit of any launch vehicle in the world, despite receiving a design reliability rating equivalent to that of the best launch vehicles currently flying in the United States.

It looks very windy in the Marshall Islands, with scattered birds...

You can see the vent gases going horizontal, and the support lines rocking, and the flag flapping...

3pm update: they are loading liquid oxygen from the first stage back to the storage facility.... sounds like a delay (which is to be expected).

When Elon Musk gets this bird in the air, he will make history.... The Falcon 1 is a new orbital launch vehicle with modern materials (carbon fiber) and electronics (the Shuttle uses 1970’s technology). It has no fins, and dramatically lowers the cost of getting to orbit.

Anticipatory email from SpaceX on Thursday:

“At T-Zero, the hold-down clamps will release and it will begin its journey to orbit, accelerating to 17,000 mph or twenty-five times the speed of sound in less than ten minutes.

The launch will take place from Omelek island, which is in the Kwajalein Atoll of the Marshall Islands. This mission's customer is DARPA and the Air Force and the payload will be FalconSat-2, part of the Air Force Academy’s satellite program that will measure space plasma phenomena, which can adversely affect space-based communications, including GPS and other civil and military communications. The target orbit is 400 km X 500 km, just above the International Space Station, at an inclination of 39 degrees.

On launch day, SpaceX will make history for several reasons:

–Falcon 1 will be the first privately developed, liquid fueled rocket to reach orbit and the world's first all new orbital rocket in over a decade.

–The main engine of Falcon 1 (Merlin) will be the first all new American hydrocarbon booster engine to be flown in forty years and only the second new American booster engine of any kind in twenty-five years.

–The Falcon 1 is the only rocket flying 21st century avionics, which require a small fraction of the power and mass of other systems.

–It will be the world's only semi-reusable orbital rocket apart from the Shuttle (all other launch vehicles are completely expendable).

–The Falcon 1 first stage has the highest propellant mass of any launch vehicle currently flying.

–SpaceX will have developed and activated two new launch sites, including the only American ground launch site near equator.

–Most importantly, Falcon 1, priced at $6.7 million, will provide the lowest cost per flight to orbit of any launch vehicle in the world, despite receiving a design reliability rating equivalent to that of the best launch vehicles currently flying in the US."

Tapping and selling pine sap provides alternative work to picking tea leaves, but few people pursue it. One worker can collect up to 40 kg of pine sap in a month and sell it for 7000 rupiah (US$0.70) per kg. But the sap can only be sold to forestry officials. When this photo was taken in May, 2008, officials had not visited in two months and the workers could not sell elsewhere, affecting their income.

The 2013 UN Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR13) is entitled “From Shared Risk to Shared Value: The Business Case for Disaster Risk Reduction”.

The report looks at the central role of the private sector in reducing escalating levels of disaster risk and how business is increasingly seeing disaster risk management as an opportunity rather than a cost.

GAR13 highlights how the transformation of the global economy over the last 40 years has led to rapid increases in disaster risk affecting businesses, communities and governments.

Just 5 minutes ago... But Falcon1 went into Terminal Count Abort 0.5 seconds after ignition. Email from the team relayed that pressure for the main chamber was 0.2% under the abort limit.

There was a lot of water on the pad, and cursing that I don't think they intended to mixed into the audio link... I can only imagine the intensity of the emotions at times like this.

Update: They have now recycled the countdown to launch. You can watch the launch video here.

The first stage appeared to perform flawlessly.
