A prison art lamp of folded origami-like papers, made entirely of discarded magazines. A beautiful example of recycling. The lamp is not wired, but could be functional with a small compact flourescent, perhaps? Need to check the fire code on that one.
This was made by my brother, who is a natural talent with this technique. Other examples of paper prison art here and here.
To clarify, my brother was incarcerated when he made this. And yes, he and his fellow inmates made objects with this technique to make some income.
Here is a comic strip that UpFuk sent us from jail.

Just one of the many stunning art works that made up the works of Sculpture in the Gaol.
This work was superbly positioned in one of the many cells within the gaol.
I have titled this image, Prison art.

A vase made of folded papers pieced together -- like Tetris meets origami. This technique is one of the few crafts made by local prisoners -- although, this particular piece was created by free man (local craftsman John Agoun). A chenchuli gift for the lovely chotda
I am drawn to prison art of many forms, but this currently fascinates me. Made of recycled materials. Please check my paper prison art set for more examples.

Hankerchief painted with an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe made by an inmate at the Arizona State Penitentiary
Beautiful prisoner, left here for dead
Promises made and sentences read
Voices and visions are locked in my head
Like a saint full of sorrow.
All of the words that we dared never speak
All of our ghosts and the secrets we keep
Gather them all and we'll bury them deep
Like a saint full of sorrow.
