Mechelen is one of Flanders' prominent cities of historical art, with Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, and Leuven. It was notably a centre for artistic production during the Northern Renaissance, when painters, printmakers, illuminators and composers of polyphony were attracted by patrons such as Margaret of York, Margaret of Austria and Hieronymus van Busleyde

""The work Skinned (1987) by Italian artist Mimmo Paladino (1948) is as hard to describe and versatile as his career. He is both a painter, sculptor printmaker, art teacher and video artist. As does his work in general, this work mixes elements of art history, classical mythology, Christianity and anthropology with no clear and present meaning.""

Jan van der Heyden (5 March 1637, Gorinchem – 28 March 1712, Amsterdam) was a Dutch Baroque-era painter, glass painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Van der Heyden was one of the first Dutch painters to specialize in townscapes and became one of the leading architectural painters of the Dutch Golden Age. He painted a number of still lifes in the beginning and at the end of his career.

Jan van der Heyden was also an engineer and inventor who made significant contributions to contemporary firefighting technology. He improved the fire hose in 1672, with his brother Nicolaes, who was a hydraulic engineer. He modified the manual fire engine, reorganised the volunteer fire brigade (1685) and wrote and illustrated the first firefighting manual (Brandspuiten-boek). A comprehensive street lighting scheme for Amsterdam, designed and implemented by van der Heyden, remained in operation from 1669 until 1840 and was adopted as a model by many other towns and abroad.

His most frequent subject were various views of Amsterdam. In addition, he painted vistas of other Dutch, Flemish and German cities (in particular the region near the Dutch–German border), country houses and estates and landscapes. It is believed that he visited these places personally. A painting of an Italian scene is believed to have been based on a drawing by Daniël Schellinks. Other foreign scenes may have been based on drawings of other artists. Van der Heyden often painted country estates. Several views exist of Goudestein, a country estate owned by Joan Huydecoper II, the Amsterdam burgomaster. A set of 14 paintings depicting scenes in and around the village of Maarssen were likely also made on commission for Joan Huydecoper II, who had developed real estate around that village.

Van der Heyden also created completely imaginary architectural fantasies, so-called capricci. An example is An Architectural Fantasy (c. 1670, National Gallery of Art), which appears to be a product of pure imagination. Italian influences are visible in the classical structure recalling the buildings of Palladio and the decorative sculptural elements.

Jan van der Heyden painted still lifes in the beginning and at the end of his career. Nine of his still lifes survive. One of his earliest dated still lifes is a Still life with a bible (signed and dated 1664, Mauritshuis). This and other early still lifes typically depict a bible and other objects on a table with a carpet.

Van der Heyden painted his still life masterpiece Room Corner with Curiosities at the age of seventy-five in 1712, the year he died. Now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest the composition reprises the themes of his earlier still lifes with special attention given to the vanitas symbolism. The Bible in the foreground is opened at the well-known line from Ecclesiastes: 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity'.

William Blake, a poet, painter and printmaker, was born in Soho, London on 28 November 1757. The Ancient of Days, seen here projected onto the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, is said to be one of Blake's favourites to copy. This tribute to Blake is being projected onto the dome during the evenings from 28 November (the anniversary of Blake's birth) to 1 December 2019.

AMSTERDAM, Rijksmuseum - Rembrandt van Rijn, in full Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Rembrandt originally spelled Rembrant, (born July 15, 1606, Leiden, Netherlands—died October 4, 1669, Amsterdam), Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker, one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art, possessing an exceptional ability to render people in their various moods and dramatic guises. Rembrandt is also known as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some critics to claim that he preferred ugliness to beauty.

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, July 16, 1796 – February 22, 1875, or simply Camille Corot, is a French landscape and portrait painter as well as a printmaker in etching. He is a pivotal figure in landscape painting and his vast output simultaneously referenced the Neo-Classical tradition and anticipated the plein-air innovations of Impressionism.

with trees, by the river, 2-20-21

My early learning as an artist was as a painter and printmaker,

working with figurative surrealism and later focused on abstract art dealing with rhythmic variations.

At some point I realized that rhythmic variations are most interesting to me and could be expressed visually as well as with sound.

I chose to work with photography as one area of expression because it allowed me to be engaged in exploring rhythmic changes in particular spaces.

In series “with trees, by the river”, I focus on how the rhythm of trees interact with each other across time, so in different seasons and light conditions. I take advantage of my zoom lens and aperture to show a range from highly selected focus to all parts in focus.

My bigger hope is that the beautiful scenes either stimulate and/or strengthen the love for the natural environment and by extension human life that is dependent on nature being healthy.

Both the natural and social environment need our love for us to be healthy and happy.

On February 20, I went out after several very deep snow falls, but also in very sunny weather in the morning. The river was completely iced over and covered in snow. In some places I stood in 2-3 feet of snow to make the photos.

I hope that you enjoy!

Alfred Kubin: Der Tod bei der Arbeit (um 1923)

Tusche, Aquarell auf Papier | India ink, watercolor on paper

From the exhibition ALFRED KUBIN. CONFESSIONS OF A TORTURED SOUL in the Leopold Museum in Vienna

"The art of the great draftsman, illustrator and author of the novel The Other Side, Alfred Kubin, appears more current today than ever before: for it was violence, wartime destruction, pandemics, natural disasters, the manipulation of the masses and other abysses of human existence that pervaded his highly narrational works. The oeuvre of this fantastical creator confronts us with pessimistic visions which – to quote Schopenhauer – delineate “the worst of all possible worlds”."

This statue was made by Spanish sculptor, Mariano Benlliure in 1902

Francisco José de GOYA (1746 – 1828) was a Spanish romanticpainter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career was a commentator and chronicler of his era. Immensely successful in his lifetime, Goya's late works especially have been highly influential and he is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns.

From the exhibition "Dürer, Munch, Miró - The Great Masters of Printmaking" in the ALBERTINA in Vienna www.albertina.at/en/exhibitions/duerer-munch-miro-the-gre...

The name Goltzius, it seems, doesn't sound sexy enough to be included in the title of such an exhibition, but actually it would definitely have belonged there, because Grotzius was most certainly a great master of printmaking.

Hendrick Goltzius (1558 - 1617) "was a German-born Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter. He was the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period, or Northern Mannerism, lauded for his sophisticated technique, technical mastership and "exuberance" of his compositions." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hendrick_Goltzius

The Farnese Hercules is an ancient sculpture named after the place where the statue was installed as a collection piece in modern times, the Farnese Collection. "The items in the collection were acquired or requisitioned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who became Pope Paul III (1534 - 1549)."* The statue is "probably an enlarged copy made in the early third century AD [...]. Like many other Ancient Roman sculptures it is a copy or version of a much older Greek original [...]"**, which is unknown in this case.

When I visited the Yorkshire sculpture park recently there was a small exhibition of Elizabeth Frinks’s art. It was called Natural Connection and it showed the variety of Frink’s work from tiny pieces to monumental work. The three large sculptures in the foreground are called Desert Heads in the background are much smaller works of horses

Dame Elisabeth Jean Frink CH DBE RA (14 November 1930 – 18 April 1993) was an English sculptor and printmaker. Her Times obituary noted the three essential themes in her work as "the nature of Man; the 'horseness' of horses; and the divine in human form".

Henri-Georges Adam (1904–1967) was considered during his lifetime to be one of the greatest French sculptors and printmakers of his time. He is the creator of the emblematic Signal, a monumental sculpture spanning 22 metres and weighing 220 tonnes, commissioned by the State in 1956 for the terrace of the Musée-maison de la culture du Havre.

Against a distant view of Jerusalem,Christ's body is lowered into the arms of Saint John the Evangelist under the anguished gaze of Mary Magdalene, who kneels at the foot of the cross. On the left, one of the other Marys supports the swooning Virgin.Although the composition was based on an engraving by the Bolognese printmaker,Marcantonio Raimondi (ca.1480-before 1534),the figure's thin draperies, elongated silhouettes, and Grecian profiles reflect the influence of the court artist Jean Goujon.

Grande jetée Des Sables D'Olonne 1997

A powerful black-and-white photograph capturing the Grande Jetée at Les Sables-d’Olonne, where the red light beacon stands against the fury of the Atlantic Ocean. Waves crash with immense force against the breakwater, sending up plumes of spray that seem to dissolve into the sky. Seagulls circle in the wind, their flight accentuating both the drama and the vastness of the scene. The composition conveys a timeless dialogue between human construction and the untamed energy of the sea, caught in a fleeting yet eternal moment.

William Blake.

William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His so-called prophetic works were said by 20th century critic Northrop Frye to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry led 21st-century critic Jonathan Jones to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". In 2002, Blake was placed at number 38 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. Although he lived in London his entire life (except for three years spent in Felpham), he produced a diverse and symbolically rich œuvre, which embraced the imagination as "the body of God" or "human existence itself".

Although Blake was considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, he is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterised as part of the Romantic movement and as "Pre-Romantic". Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England (indeed, to almost all forms of organised religion), Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American Revolutions. Though later he rejected many of these political beliefs, he maintained an amiable relationship with the political activist Thomas Paine; he was also influenced by thinkers such as Emanuel Swedenborg. Despite these known influences, the singularity of Blake's work makes him difficult to classify. The 19th-century scholar William Rossetti characterised him as a "glorious luminary", and "a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors".
