This view of the Melbourne skyline, Princes Bridge and the Yarra River is my submission for the Definitely Dreaming week 23 theme of "Night".

Melbourne town. You can stand at many points along the Yarra River and watch Melbourne spill out all its charm (thanks Tom Waits).

Sometimes its gentle.

Sometimes it's chaotic.

Sometimes it's downright dirty and mean.

There's a charm for everyone

Looking towards Princes Bridge and Federation Square from Southbank near Hamer Hall. It was the red cranes that attracted me to this photograph.

There are a number of tourist boats berthed on Southbank, Melbourne with a smooth ramp down to their berths. All shining in the lights on the wet night. Happy Fence Friday. There will be lots of people queuing up behind fences over the next week or so with the Olympic starting soon.

The city of Melbourne council have setup several giant projectors that shine tropical fish tank scenes on the sides of the city buildings. I went with the intent to take some night shots of the Melbourne skyline. With all the city lights shining in all directions, I didn't notice I was shooting into the bright spotlights. I think it kind of adds something a bit different to the photograph.

Thanks for dropping by! Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

There was a full moon rising on this balmy Christmas eveining, magical.

25 seconds is a random time for a long exposure, but I was going by the histogram.

Something that I found amazing, the seagulls on the left stood still for the entire exposure.

Princes Bridge, Melbourne. The bridge spans the Yarra River and is built on the site of one of the oldest river crossings in the city, and forms a gateway into the central city from the south. It was built in 1888 and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Designed by by architect and engineer John Grainger following a competition and the current bridge is the third bridge in the same location.

As much as I enjoyed my recent photo-walk around Sydney, I still think Melbourne's city skyline is better. Sydney has a couple of world famous iconic buildings, but lots of 1960's/70's grey concrete buildings. Melbourne has a vast array of buildings, ranging from vintage to ultra modern glass.

Two spans of the Princes Bridge, looking northward into Melbourne's City Centre. This is the site of the original crossing of the Yarra River, with the present bridge having been built in 1888, 44 years after the first one.

Melbourne's Yarra River is affectionately know as the upside down river due to it's permanently brown appearance.

The much maligned muddy colour of the Yarra is caused by the easily eroded clay soils of the water catchment. The water was clear at the time of European settlement, but intensive land clearing and development since the mid 1800s has resulted in the presence of microscopic clay particles. The particles are kept suspended by the turbulence in some parts of the middle and lower sections of the river. When the river water combines with marine salts as it enters Port Phillip, the suspended particles clump together and sink. The muddy appearance does not indicate an unclean waterway. In fact, the Yarra is probably one of the cleanest capital city rivers in the world. Since the major clean-up campaigns of the late 1970s and 1980s, the river has again become home to several species of fish and even the occasional dolphin.

After what felt like a month-long Antarctic Blast, Melbourne was treated to an unseasonal run of 20-degree weather this week. This shot is taken from the Evan Walker Bridge. Recreational cruise charters line the Yarra River, Princes Bridge in the midground, Hamer Hall to the right, and the magnificent MCG dominating the horizon.

I for one, am excited to see the results of the Birrarung Mar redevelopment between the G and Fed Square.

Melbourne is one of the great multicultural cities of the world. It is the coastal capital of the southeastern Australian state of Victoria. At the city's centre is the modern Federation Square development, with plazas, bars, and restaurants by the Yarra River.

The view from Princes Bridge shows the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in the distance with added texture and rays. You can see a family having their photo taken on the bridge with this scene behind them.

I woke up this morning to find our Olympic Swimmers and Women's Time Trial Cyclist have scored medals at the Paris Olympics overnight. Well done indeed.

Happy Sliders Sunday.

Many Melbourne buildings were bathed in blue lights on Thursday night to mark the first anniversary of the Eastern Freeway tragedy that claimed the lives of four Victoria Police officers.

Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Josh Prestney were killed after stopping to pull over a speeding driver who was 49km/hr over the speed limit in his black Porsche.

The driver of the truck who ploughed into the four police officers was recently jailed for 22 years after being found to have been high on ice and having had only 5 hours rest in the previous 70 hours before the accident.

Melbourne CBD on a grim grey and slightly blue evening in the city with the lovely FFM. It came on to rain slightly off and on from sunset and the only colour was hanging over the MCG. These two people were sitting on the bench watching the river traffic go by. The white wrapping on the Princes Bridge is due to maintenance works. It stands out but is not particularly appealing. Apart from our trip to Bright all our FFM meeting this year have been with cloudy and cool days.

Who can say if your love grows

As your heart chose, only time

And who can say where the road goes

Where the day flows, only time

Downtown Melbourne at night loooking over the Yarra River. A tricky shot to control given the intense points of light on the bridge.
