Happy May 1st, my friendszszszszszszsz :)

Did you know that like other jays, the "Steller's Jay" has numerous and variable vocalizations? They are also known as mimics, because of their ability to mimic vocalizations of many species of birds and other animals, as well as non animal sounds. They will imitate calls from birds of prey causing other birds to seek cover and flee feeding areas.

The Steller Jay is the provincial bird of the Canadian province of British Columbia.

The Steller's Jay occurs in most of the forested areas of western North America as far east as the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains from southern Alaska in the north to northern Nicaragua completely replacing the blue jay prevalent on the rest of the continent in those areas.

The Black-headed Grosbeak is a songbird of medium size. It can be typically found in mixed or broad-leaved forests, especially in brushy, riparian areas. They are not as often found in coniferous vegetation, but will inhabit paths of broadleaved trees and shrubs within confer forest, including streamside corridors, wetlands, and suburban areas.

Black-headed Grosbeaks range from the Pacific Coast to the middle of the US Great Plains and from southwestern Canada to the mountains of Mexico. US and Canadian birds are highly migratory, wintering in Mexico.

The Black-headed Grosbeak is a spring and early summer visitor here on south Vancouver Island, B.C.. They fly all the way to Mexico for the winter months.

A pretty male House Finch perched and posing for me!

Did you know that the male House Finch gets its color from the pigments in the food it eats? I enjoy seeing the male House Finches with different pigments, rather than all the same shade.

Was so happy to see this beautiful male Wood Duck swim by on the Rideau River, Ottawa. Happy new week my friends =)

A pretty female Goldfinch adding color to our summer months here on Vancouver Island, B.C..

These flashy little finches can be found in open floodplains, weedy fields and overgrown areas, particularly with sunflower, aster, and thistle plants for food and some shrubs and trees for nesting.

Goldfinches almost exclusively consume seeds.

Sitting on the back deck a few minutes ago ,I spotted a male and female American Goldfinch on my little Mulberry tree. I went back into the house to grab my camera and by this time the male was on the feeder and female on top of the feeder. I squeezed off a couple quick shots, they heard the camera shutter and flew away.

A Common Myna perches on a sunny Plumaria branch on the tropical island of Kauai.

The Common Myna is a species belonging to the Starling family. They originate from Central, South and Southeast Asia and since the late 1800's have been introduce to many other places around the world to eradicate pests. They have adapted so well in many areas that they themselves are known as pests.

These Pine Jays are all over at Whitney Portal. They are like pigeons :-I & this Stellar’s Jay looks like he just woke up.

The Cedar Waxwing belongs to the passerine bird family and is native to North and Central America. It breeds in open wooded areas of southern Canada and winters in the southern half of the United States. Its diet includes cedar cones, fruit, and insects.

The Cedar Waxwing is smaller than its close relative the Bohemian waxwing which breeds farther to the north and west.

Always take a moment even when you are busy indoors, to look out your window, because you never know who may be visiting your yard!

"A male Evening Grosbeak" was feeding at the feeder while his mate was perched up high in a tree keeping watch. He fed on the Safflower seeds for a while before landing on a nearby branch, giving me a chance to capture a few shots before he and his mate took to the air together.

Evening Grosbeaks are numerous and widespread, but populations dropped steeply between 1966 and 2015, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey—particularly in the East where numbers declined by 97% during that time. Partners in Flight estimates a global breeding population of 4.1 million, with 71% spending some part of the year in the U.S., 57% in Canada, and 5% living in Mexico. Evening Grosbeak rates a 13 out of 20 on the Continental Concern Score and is on the 2016 State of North America's Birds' Watch List, which includes bird species that are most at risk of extinction without significant conservation actions to reverse declines and reduce threats.

A Killdeer takes some time to preen its feathers on a lovely warm afternoon.

Killdeer are of the Plover family.

Feathers are critical to a bird's survival as they contribute to insulation, waterproofing and aerodynamic flight and for those reasons, birds spend a great deal of time preening. Preening is how a bird keeps their feathers clear of parasites, dirt, displacement of feathers and interlocking lose barbs.

It looks like this sweet Robin has a nest in my Smoke Tree. It comes to visit in my garden a few times a day. Such a little beauty to watch.

Another portrait shot of Pretty Bird Poppy Parker, quite the prickly one for this cutesy Poppy collector. The jury is still out on whether she stays here, so to speak. :)

I wondered what this usual looking bird was when I spotted it near the frozen waterfall. It looked a bit like a Blue Jay but different. When I got home I found out it was a Stellar's Jay.
