“Art is about material objects,” Lawrence Weiner once declared in a 1989 interview, which is an interesting assertion from an artist who has largely been working with language since the late 1960s, and who is widely known as a foremost figure of Conceptual art. In Weiner’s case, material objects are represented by general nouns and straightforward descriptions devoid of embellishments or any trace of subjectivity (A WALL BUILT TO FACE THE LAND & THE WATER AT THE LEVEL OF THE SEA, 2009) as well as by equally straightforward actions (ONE QUART EXTERIOR GREEN INDUSTRIAL ENAMEL THROWN ON A BRICK WALL, 1968). Substituting language for actual objects, physical materials, and physical procedures, Weiner’s works are marvelously and radically open-ended, while they stick to empirical facts. It is likely, for instance, that every alert viewer will form a different mental image of Weiner’s BALLS OF WOOD / BALLS OF IRON, 1995, presented in Carnival Within, while his A PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS ASAP, 2006, with its reference to a famous phrase in the American Declaration of Independence, also allows for maximum interpretive freedom, including what happiness is and how one pursues it. With their spare yet vivid colors, and the way in which their constituent words are positioned on the wall, both of these works also loosely suggest the exuberance and dynamism of circus posters and ads.
Starting with his succinct, provocative, and much-repeated manifesto on the nature of artworks, their ownership, and modes of realization (1. THE ARTIST MAY CONSTRUCT THE WORK 2. THE WORK MAY BE FABRICATED 3. THE WORK NEED NOT BE BUILT) Weiner has explored myriad ways of presenting his work. Wallworks involving different materials such as paint or vinyl lettering coexist with posters, books, drawings, films, stencils on building facades, and many other forms. While it has long been recognized that Weiner is a pioneer of Conceptual art, his works also have a pronounced, and amazingly prescient, visuality. Weiner’s graphic presentation of words, begun in the 1960s and continuing until now, anticipated and probably influenced our contemporary orientation toward words and texts altogether, including advertisements, magazine layouts, computer desktop environments, and website designs.
