Presentation Smallsword

English(London), dated 1780

Admiral Marriot Arbuthnot was presented with this sword by the English island of Jersey for having saved it from attach by the French fleet in 1779. A band wound around the grip bears a Latin inscription that reads in translation: "The Island of Jersey, delivered, presents this in gratitude, 1780." The urn-shape pommel is an early example of this typical feature of English neoclassical hilts.

The Presentation Sisters have made Georgestown their home since 1842. In addition to being teachers, the young women who joined the convent were expected to help sustain the convent by taking on other responsibilities. All of the sisters were expected to spend some time in the convent gardens where root vegetables were planted.

The gardens located at the rear of the convent - now on the corner of Mullock Street and Barnes Road - is now the location of the Presentation Sisters Cemetery.
