In the afternoon session, the art-science discussion goes a bit deeper, scrutinizing in particular whether art is in a position to go beyond interpreting scientifically induced pictures of the world and can itself, in a comparable way, engender and propagate new concepts about our world and the interrelationships and interactions in it. Julius von Bismarck (DE), the first artist-in-residence in the program under the joint aegis of CERN and Ars Electronica, will present his work and relate his experiences, and then go into detail in a panel discussion with James Wells (US), his scientific advisor during his residency, and Ariane Koek (UK/CH), CERN’s director of artistic affairs. CERN physicist Michael Doser will moderate. The broad spectrum of positions that artistic works can take with respect to scientific issues will occupy the focal point of the rest of the afternoon session. The work presentations by prizewinners in the Hybrid Art and Interactive Art categories will demonstrate once again the great fascination as well as relevance such works can achieve beyond the discrete domain of art.

The Coast Guard Academy held a presentation in honor of the Holocaust Days of Remembrance, April 19, 2017.
Commemoration of the Days of Remembrance by the U.S. Armed Forces was established after President Ronald Reagan's 'Commission on the Holocaust Report' recommended that the Days of Remembrance "occur on days when Americans worship in the churches and synagogues of the nation... to encompass the internationally recognized Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Hashoah, the 27th of the month of Nissan on the Hebrew calendar. The date also marks the anniversary of significant American involvement in the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps."

Noel Smith has given a lovely silver trophy to the band (his favourite band at Vale Park, partly because we are the only band who always mark the tradition of playing a hymn tune on a Sunday) in memory of his wife - the 'Eva Smith Memorial Trophy'
The award is made by the MD of Port Lyceum Brass at the Vale Park concert every year.

We began our visit as the New Year 2016 began by going straight to the Conservatory of nearly 5 acres in order to see this Christmas season’s display, which seemed to focus much on Blue and Water. Seeing the indoor exhibits during daytime hour, and the again, at night, makes the experience that much more interesting, for it is comparable to experiencing two separate show. As always, the array of creative displays for the holidays was nothing short of amazing, and the regular presentation of flowers and other plants throughout never ceases to lack a sense of awe. First class and pure elegance is the norm here . . .
The nighttime views were simply breathtaking, from the enormous trees lit beautifully by the grand lawn to those by the paths heading toward Large Lake and the spectacular “Floating Trees.” The view of the Italian Water Garden Tree Light at night was phenomenal in its brilliance. And furthermore, the rainbow of colors displayed in lights wrapped around the tall tree trunks near the Pierre DuPont House was so exquisitely presented.
The wide variety of flowers and plants at Longwood Gardens are absolutely stunning in all stages and species . . . truly a Garden of Eden for anyone with a deep passion for these gifts of nature. In addition, the architectural designs and structures throughout accentuate the experience, never ceasing to amaze. Situated on over 1,000 acres of magnificent grounds, and with the great influence of the original owner and founder, Pierre du Pont, still evident today, this is widely considered as one of the very finest garden in the world. One can visit every month over the course of any given year, and enjoy a new and exciting experience with the constant introduction of seasonal plants and flowers, along with one spectacular event or another.
