Participants of the Infant Mortality Summit were introduced to resources from WIC, March of Dimes, Collaborative for Children, Neighborhood Tax Centers, TSU's Center on the Family, and more.
The inaugural W. Seavey Joyce, S.J., Award for Service and Citizenship - named for the 23rd president of Boston College and former dean of the Carroll School of Management - was presented by University President William P. Leahy, S.J., to Lisa Adaora Nwachukwu, a 2011 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, in recognition of her track record of civic engagement during her undergraduate career and her stated commitment to continue public service after graduation. She will spend the coming year in Nigeria, doing a volunteer internship at the National Hospital of Abuja, assisting women and families that suffer from improper prenatal care. Dharmapur Block, Valsad, Gujarat, India. 16th May 2012: An expecting mother is given a through medical check up by, ANM (Auxillary Nurse and Midwife) Nainaben at a local anganwadi center on "Mamta Diwas". Dharmapur block in Kaprada is one of the most under-developed areas in the predominantly tribal Valsad district in Southern Gujarat. The UNICEF-supported Mamta Divas (Mothers Day) programme was launched by the Government of India in 2005. One day each month, every state in the country provides essential health services for mothers and children. The women are taught about institutional delivery, colostrum feeding, exclusive breast feeding, and hand-washing. The main objective of this strategy is to reduce infant mortality as well as malnutrition among children through effective delivery of Health &.
