From the Kodak Cartridge Premo 00, this time with the lens the right way around.

Buena Vista, Va

In my search to discover more useless and orphan film formats, I've found a Kodak Premo No 00, a box camera which takes unperforated 35mm on a paper backing. The image size is about 32 x 44mm. I'm trying it with the lens each way, because why not?

I have been obsessed with this tiny box camera for the pst two weeks. Finally figured out how to reroll and load film into it, after making a custom cartridge. Happy to share the details if anyone else needs the info. I had to put electric tape on the metal edges of the frame that holds the film so it wouldn't scratch and the tape peeled loose-- made these cool odd-shaped images.

This is the Pedraforca, one of the most iconic mountains in Catalonia, at least seen from the east. The name means, in Catalan, "fork of stone".

This one of my first Zebra jelly plate, made in Slovenia. I haven't quite found the sensitivity for them yet, tending to overexpose them too much (which must cause these irregularities).

Kodak premo no9 5x4 ( manu 1913-23 ), Fomapan retro 320. Test shot with a ziess novar 80mm f6.3 lens(derval shutter, lens cost £9.00) from an old folder mounted on a lens board. The bed doesn't drop on the premo so had to use full rise or the bed would be included in shot. Obviously not full coverage (cropped left and right of image) but a simple wide angle option as the standard lens on the premo is 170mm .

I was testing out the focusing. I took several photos of this scene - one at 100ft, and the other at FIXED. They both turned out relatively the same, but in this case, 100ft gave me a slightly clearer image. Moving forward, however, I may stick with FIXED.

n 1897, the Rochester Optical Company announced a major design variation of the traditional folding plate camera. To be able to use long focal length lenses, the back drops down like the front. This permits an extra long bellows draw for telephoto photography, enlarging, and copying.

Pony Premo No 6 5x7 Folding Box Camera

I'm guessing this camera with the Victor flat-top shutter and Bausch and Lomb lens combination was made sometime between 1897 and 1905 by the Rochester Optical Company.

The camera came complete with a custom felt lined case and a set of film/plate holders as shown in the picture. Being made from solid mahogany, covered with "seal-grain" leather, and with nickel plated brass hardware they truly were "Premo".

Despite being over 100 years old, it's in amazing condition. The lens is still clear, the bellows are still light tight, and the shutter still works (albeit a bit sluggish). I'll be posting some pictures taken with this camera soon.

Kodak premo No 9 4x5(manufactured 1913-23) . 170mm f6.3 Kodak Anastigmat lens. Rollei rpx25 in perceptol 1-10 60 mins. The old kodak bellows extend well beyond 170mm for close ups but this is a crop of a 15 sec f45 shot by window light.

=====================

Around 1900, American large-format cameras focused primarily on Rochester manufacturers, among which Eastmann Kodak would excel and dominate.

But before that, in many cases before being assimilated by Kodak itself, there were other major manufacturers in Rochester. In fact, Rochester is only comparable to Dresden for Europe, where much of the German manufacturers were concentrated (also progressively agglutinated by Zeiss Ikon).

This gem is a Rochester Optical Co. Pony Premo No.4. This is a large format camera, specifically 5x7 inches, of the "hand & stand" type, designed to be easy to take to the field, or by bike! There are many similar models of this kind, even between different manufacturers.

This one carries a Bausch & Lomb Victor shutter and Rochester Symmetrical lens; seems to have been manufactured in 1903, just before the R.Oc. Co. was bought by Eastman Kodak. In fact, Kodak continued to manufacture the Pony Premo No.4 under its name. The change is quite noticeable as Kodak changed the shutter of the Pony Premo, so the Victor shutter here is a clear marker that the camera was made before 1904.
