Yesterday we had wild weather in Ocean Shores. We were treated with three bald eagles while we were beachcomber afterwards. This one was snacking on a seagull.
In this case, it's a bit difficult not to feel sorry for the prey. Paralyzed and then liquefied doesn't seem like a pleasant end to life.

Mongoose : formidable predator which originates from North Africa and found in Spain . Mongoose were thought to have been introduced to Spain by the Arabs during their occupation from 8th to 14th century, however Mongoose bones have been carbon dated to the 1st century A.D. and it's entirely possible they always were in Spain when it was adjoined to N. Africa before the land masses separated
hanging around, the male is on the left while smaller female is on the right, mating season. This was taken shortly after finding them feeding on road kill.

Dragonflies have a life span of anywhere from about six months to several years. Most of the dragonfly life span is spent in the water as a nymph. During this period, which can last up to a couple of years, it sheds its skin many times. Finally it crawls onto land to break out of its skin as a full fledged dragonfly.
As you can tell by the blood on this Coopers Hawks talons and beak, this true predator, and swift hunter, quickly eats his prey, (a Pidgeon), I know because I watched the whole thing, and then vanishes in plain flight.
Dublin, California.
A predator with his trophy passed us this morning while we volunteers had tea and coffee. Poor mouse!

0n 13th December, 2025 NORA, the oldest known female cheetah in the Mara ecosystem (13.5 years), following a fatal encounter with a leopard.
Born in April 2012 to Narasha, alongside her brother M23-Nur, Nora’s life was shaped early by independence, after Narasha left them in December 2013, and after separating with her brother in February 2014, Nora began her solitary life at 21 months old. From October 2014 onward, she was recorded pregnant more than 15 times and gave birth to over 11 litters sired by different males, though most were lost within the first two month, a stark reflection of the high reproductive costs female cheetahs face. In September 2016, she achieved a rare success, raising a single male cub to independence from a litter of four born in June 2015. Her last recorded reproductive effort came in February 2023, when she gave birth late in the afternoon and lost the cub within a month.
In older cheetahs, parturition often takes longer and occurs later in the day rather than at night or early morning, increasing the risk of detection by other predators; cubs are also mostly weaker and do not survive in the wild.
Nora’s long, resilient life tells a powerful story of endurance, loss, and the biological limits faced by aging cheetahs. As we reflect on her legacy, we are reminded of the critical role responsible tourism plays; maintaining distance, keeping noise low, and avoiding overcrowding are essential to reducing stress and predation risk, especially for vulnerable individuals and mothers with cubs. My last sighting of Nora was on Photography Safari during an early morning game drive when we found Nora resting under the shade on an acacia tree on the vast plains of Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya.
A jumping spider drags off its latest prey, a Sely's Sundragon about three times larger than itself.
Scarlet Tanagers eat mainly insects along with some fruit and tender buds. Their invertebrate diet includes ants, sawflies, moths, butterflies, beetles, flies, cicadas, leafhoppers, spittlebugs, treehoppers, plant lice, scale insects, termites, grasshoppers, locusts, dragonflies, dobsonflies, snails, earthworms, and spiders. While searching for these tidbits they walk along branches high in the canopy or (rarely) along the ground, or vertically on tree trunks to probe the bark.
California King Snake
Carrizo Plain
These snakes are immune to rattlesnake venom so are one of their predators. They kill by constriction, not venom.
