I have luckily managed to capture an incredible fish-hunt and fight this river otter has performed, in the calm waters of Alouette river. This was the first time for me to have witnessed such an amazing spectacle and I truly hope it won't be the last.

Otters are masterful fish predators, while in the water. On land, they can become prey for larger mammals.

Despite the apparent fearful expression in my photo, I think most of us love otters. They are cute and make funny poses and grimaces.

The Stoat is a small predator; their long, thin body makes them well adapted for hunting rats lizards mice and rabbits. They easily kill adult rabbits that are much larger than themselves . Stoats are active by day and at night . They have one litter of six to twelve kits a year.

Brown back with a creamy white underside (Some are white in winter) Stoats have a tail with a black tip. Weight.120g. - 250g. Size. 17-32cm.

I was watching one of the log piles yesterday with my friend John, where I walk my Dog, when this tiny beauty was seen weaving in and out of the logs. The first one we have seen and been able to get photographs of. So you can imagine how excited we were. A great day and the perfect start to the weekend.

Size:

Pygmy Shrew 40-60 mm; tail 32-46 mm the Common Shrew size that I posted before being Size: 48-80mm, tail 24-44mm; tail less than 3/4 length of head and body.

Weight:

2.4-6.1g. Weight may decrease up to 28% in winter.

Diet:

They feed mainly on insects, arachnids and woodlice, requiring regular meals and eating up to 125% of their body weight in food daily. Unlike common shrews, they rarely eat earthworms.

Lifespan:

Peak mortality is at 2-4 months and the maximum lifespan is around 13 months.

Origin & Distribution:

Widespread throughout the mainland of Britain and Ireland, in most terrestrial habitats which offer sufficient ground cover. They are also found on the Isle of Man and Outer Hebrides, where common shrews are absent. Pygmy shrews are active day and night, largely above ground. They make and use "surface tunnels" in vegetation and will frequent burrows dug by other animals. They seem to be relatively more common on moorland than are common shrews.

Habitat:

Urban & gardens

Deciduous woodland

Grassland

Mixed woodland

Arable land

Behaviour:

As in all shrews, senses of smell, hearing and touch are well-developed. Pygmy shrews are solitary and aggressive towards conspecifics. Home ranges vary from around 500-2000 square metres, depending on habitat, with maximum densities of around 12 per hectare. Strict territoriality is only abandoned during the breeding season.

Breeding:

Pygmy shrews overwinter as immatures and breed between April and October, producing two or three litters of 5-7 young. Their main predators are owls and other avian predators, particularly those which hunt on moorland.

These creatures called humans came to our world.

With their weapons. Their arrogance.

They thought they could subjugate us,

Make us bow to their will.

Foolish, inferior beings.

A few seconds was enough for them to realize the magnitude of our power.

Now they run and hide for their lives, that is all they can do.

I will hunt them down. Each one of them.

I will mount their heads on spikes as a reminder of what happens to anyone who defies us.

For my kind bends the knee to no one.

My people were not born to be slaves.

We were born to be conquerors.

Kirk's Dik-Dik, a very small antelope, is standing in the shadow of a large bush.

Kirk's dik-dik (Madoqua kirkii) is a small antelope native to Eastern Africa and one of four species of dik-dik antelope. It is believed to have six subspecies and possibly a seventh existing in southwest Africa. Dik-diks are herbivores, typically of a fawn color that aids in camouflaging themselves in savannah habitats. According to MacDonald (1985), they are also capable of reaching speeds of up to 42 kilometers per hour.

The lifespan of Kirk’s dik-dik in the wild is typically 5 years, but may surpass 10 years. In captivity males have been known to live up to 16.5 years, while females have lived up to 18.4 years.

Dik-diks are susceptible to a myriad of predators including eagles, cats, jackals, caracals, leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, cape hunting dogs, honey badgers, crocodiles, pythons, lions, and humans. Young dik-diks are particularly preyed upon by baboons, genets, and eagles.

Dik-diks have a fine-tuned sense of hearing, sight, and smell. When they feel in danger or hear the alarm calls of other animals they hide, rather than fleeing. It is only when frightened or disturbed that they emit their iconic “zik-zik” alarm. Wikipedia

This dragonfly perched itself on one of the bamboo supports in the garden, surveying his territory! I am not sure of the identity but I think it is a Brown Hawker.

Gulls and terns may be closely related, but it is not uncommon for the larger gull to prey on its smaller relative. Fortunately the tern managed to escape the attack.
