I don't use this as often as I'd like, but when I do, I really enjoy it.
A relatively recent replacement for a turntable I had since high school. It didn't break the bank but easily could have; little did I know a new turntable can require a second mortgage. And that's just for the turntable! Then there's the cartridge, the preamp, and while you're at it . . .
Musical note: I much prefer Blue Train to Kind of Blue, but the latter made for a better title. Either way, jazz is sexier in vinyl.
Technical note: This was the first time I used live view to manually focus. It's the bomb!

The dream preamplifier of every hi-fi friend (and me) from the 70s and for many certainly still today.
"Aiming for the highest level of control amplifier, this control amplifier is equipped with excellent basic performance and extensive adjustment functions" is the comment of the "Audio Database" on the CA-3000 from the Sansui "Definition" series.
The structure and the technical design of the heavy preamp (14kg) is uncompromising and built for eternity.

This is a picture of my Nikon D3000 with my new telephoto lens attached. When i got the lens in the mail, the lens cap was jammed into the front part of the lens but i was able to get it out without damaging the front element of the lens. The zoom ring was also very stiff when i first used it. Other than that it is a very good lens for the $160 that it cost. I was actually surprised that it came with a lens hood because the more expensive Canon EF-S 55-250mm lens i bought (for the Canon EOS Rebel XTi of course) didn't have a lens hood. I wish Sigma had better quality control though... (I took this picture with the Kodak Z1275 in case anyone was wondering)

My Jazz V 5-string, apres-modifications. 2 Bartolini pickups w/Sadowsky preamp added (controls are - top to bottom - master volume, pickup blend, concentric bass/treble EQ, midrange scoop), a Badass V bridge - something no bass should be without - and a complete reworking of the neck.
Between the Badass adding a metric ton of definition/sustain and the Bartolinis giving it a much rounder and warmer tone overall, this bass just became a LOT more versatile in tone. In particular, the new bridge lets the B-string speak with incredible clarity and definition now, whereas before I had to really choke down to the bridge with my right hand to get a tight note out of it. No muddiness in the low register whatsoever now- it's almost painfully punchy and tight.
I'm now officially complete with my 4 Fender renovation projects. Phew. Only regret that I wasn't able to fund and complete them all faster (or closer together) with everything else that's been going on, but hey- all good things in time.
Off to plug in and play the hell out of 'em all now. ;-)
UPDATE: This bass fucking ROCKS now. I've taken it on three gigs so far as a 'backup', and each time - it's the one that's ended up on my shoulder at the end of the night. Unbelievable tone - the low-end definition is unreal!
An important part of a vinyl record player, the tonearm holds the cartridge on one end and keeps it at the right "azimuth" which is the left to right tilt the stylus must be adjusted to in order to track the vinyl record grooves. Cartridge cables run through the inside of the tone arm to transmit music to the preamp. On the opposite end of the tonearm is a counter weight which helps determine the correct vertical tracking force (VTF) the stylus manufacturer recommends.
ODC: Mechanical
Updating the image for posterity, as in the original long-shot I didn't have the new pickguard hand-cut (my first attempt) and installed yet- it really puts the icing on this beauty. The prior shot didn't really convey the painfully-exacting refinishing work on the body, either. This is still my primary stage/session bass (as it has been for damn near 17 years now), but now it can cover any tonal range you want it to - including the requisite Jazz tones - with grace and ease. Doesn't hurt that the neck has always nearly played itself, either. ;-)
(complete list 'o mods: Duncan Bass Lines 'Classic Stack' double-coil pickups, Bartolini preamp - volume + killswitch/pickup blend/concentric bass & treble EQ knob, Badass II bridge, Hipshot D-Tuner, full neck/fret rebuild and body refinish/repaint job w/pearloid pickguard.)

here's my review of them: www.electrichotelstudios.com/rnd511review/
If you know me, you know that I frequent the local Electronics Recycling dump. Sometimes I find some pretty amazing stuff there. I'm always on the lookout for vintage audio items and sometimes I get lucky. Back in May of this year I was looking for that next Marantz amp & preamp pair, or perhaps some discarded Altec Lansing 19s that someone just didn't want anymore (LOL)... I saw 2 camera bags on the floor, and was ready to ignore them both but something told me to unzip one and look inside. That bag had the Mamiya M645 with a prism finder, waist-level finder, stabilizer grip, 2 Vivitar Auto Thyristor flashes (master / slave) and about a dozen rolls of 120 film, both exposed and unexposed. The film rolls had expiration dates between 1998 and 2000.
The other bag contained, among other things, a Nikon FE (black), a Minolta X-700, some type of Canon P&S, a set of Cokin filters, and various cables for the flashes. Oh and MORE FILM... rolls and rolls of 35MM, all really old, some exposed, some not. The Minolta and the Canon had unfinished rolls in them, the Nikon needs work.
Needless to say both bags came home with me. The spent film has been donated to the Rescued Film Project . I cannot wait to see what, if anything, is on those rolls! My imagination is going crazy, but I've got to be patient. I highly recommend that you take a spin around the Rescued Film website, it's an amazing collection of lost images, I can't tell you how much I love their mission! I signed an agreement with the donation form stating that I would not publish anything that they give me, so sadly I won't be able to share them here. You could always come over for a beer and look on my computer screen with me though, I'll let you know when they're ready (it may take a year or more).
My daughter and I have been shooting all of the unexposed rolls and loving the results. Some of this expired film has held up amazingly well! I'll post some here on my flickr stream and also on my Instagram (johnfromtheradio). As a general rule we halved the ISO for every decade since it expired and processed it normally. There's interesting color shifts and some really cool splotches and flares. Fun stuff. I shot what was left of the 120 film in the Mamiya, she's going through the 35MM stuff.
Incidentally, the bags contained several business cards of the (presumed) previous owner. He was an IT guy (so he must be pretty awesome) and the cards included his SKY pager number, so that shows how long it's been since he worked at the company listed. I tried the main number, it is disconnected. I'm hesitant to page him LOL.

Back in the day, I exclusively used 6L6's in the output stage of my amplifiers. Although the 6L6 was interchangeable with the 5881, there was just something magical about the 6L6, whether imaginary or not, they just seemed warmer and smoother to my ear.
Listening to American John Fogerty's (Creedence Clearwater Revival) "Cosmos Factory" from a 180gm virgin vinyl album, a wooden Swiss phono-cartridge on a Scottish turntable, through an American phono-preamp, a New Zealand preamp, a Canadian power amplifier, American subwoofer and British speakers.
THIS is diversity!
Shot Info: Canon 400d, ISO 100, 18mm, f8, 6 second exposure, 430EX Speedlite with stofen diffuser used pointed towards the cealing for fill light.
Processing : RAW image edited in Lightroom 2.0 where I converted to B&W by desaturating each color channel. I then boosted the contrast and adjusted the tone curve. Lastly I sharpened in CS3.
I took this shot to show one of my other favorite hobbies!!! This is my frankenstein Ibanez RG 270 DX guitar. I call it my frankenstein because I have completely re-wired it. . . . twice. First round I added a Seymour Duncan Dimebucker SH13 at the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Custom 5 in the neck. About 2 years later I decided that I wanted a more raw sound so I added an EMG 89 pickup at the neck, a Seymour Duncan in the middle, and an EMG 81 at the bridge. All three pickups are active pickups, meaning that they have preamps inside of the pickup and need a power source to run. These three run off of 18 volts which is supplied by two 9 volt batteries at the back of the guitar. All the wiring has been done by me. . . more than once on both occasions. I still have a couple of electrical bugs to work out. . . but all in all it works fine. I have also added a brand spanking new neck after my strap came off and the guitar hit the floor (such a sickning sound and site to hear and see the neck snap and splinter). After breaking the neck I added a strap-lock system to the guitar and strap.
She is also referred to as frankenstein because of the hidious color. Don't get me wrong. . . it's a beautiful guitar. . . but the color can only be described as hideous. It is some sort of maroonish color seen only during the 70's. All the hardware is black and the fret inlays are pearl shark tooth design.
The amp in the background is a Peavey Bandit 112. I use a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone and a Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion for my distortion. I also use an Ibanez CF7 Chorus/Flanger and a Crybaby GCB-95 wah pedal. With this setup I play everything from blues to hardcore metal. . . though Im not that good. . . LOL.
I've been playing and self taught for 10 years now. This hasn't been my only guitar though. I've owned a Fender and an Ibanez acoustic-electric guitar. Both have been sold due to financial issues that arose some 5 years ago though.

I don't own a fully fledged vacuum tube amp as they were always too expensive for me when I was younger and still a beginner with electric guitars.
I then reached a dark period where I never touched my electric guitars, tried writing music, or simply practice new techniques.
Some time last year, it all came rushing back to me. My love of guitars... which was a hobby long before I wanted to take up digital photography as a hobby.
However, even taking into account my dark years, my skills are not directly proportional to the number of years playing (lol...), and with the latter statement, I still think an amp with a tube preamp and power amp, is still too much for my current skills (and yeah, well money, too lol). But I found a happy medium and got a tube hybrid amp (tube preamp and solid state power amp) in the Orange Micro Terror and the Orange Micro Dark last year.
So here we are, I wanted to get that subtle glow that vacuum tubes have when they warm up.
Will I ever get a fully fledged tube amp in the future? As I continue to rediscover my love for playing the guitar, and writing more and more songs, trying new techniques, but still not really that great of guitar player as I wish to be, I will admit, I am slowly getting my confidence and I already have a full tube amp in my wish list.

with polarisation switching and SHF Electronics preamps, these are controlled using a Yaesu G-5500 rotator and connected to the PC via a ERC-M interface which allows automatic tracking of satellites using SatPC32.
Things are very dialed in right now! Shure m91ed cart in the dual cs5000, shure m65 preamp with 1963 vintage telefunken 12ax7s, into the phase linear 2000 (glorified volume control) into the AMC CVT2030 (class a el34s) driving the mirage frx7s.
The equipment rack at the foot of my bed. I have two VCRs because I've been slowly digitizing VHS recordings of MTV's 1990s electronic music show "Amp." I was getting terrible color banding during the encoding process, but I read that adding a second VCR to the signal chain attenuates the video signal enough to eliminate all or most of the banding. So far I've had mostly good luck. It is a slow process, tapes have to be digitized in real time for obvious reasons.

Just getting everything in place after a major living room remodel. Soooo glad to get it back.. Just a quick shot with the doors open. Going clockwise from the top left.. Rega P3-24 with great old Audio Technica cartridge and several upgrades - Rega TT-PSU speed control - Graham Slee V Era Gold phono preamp - Bluesound Node 2022 - VPI Scout II - Rega Exact II cartridge - Apple TV - Parasound P6 preamplifier - Parasound HCA-1500A amplifier - Rega Apollo CD player - Sony blue-ray player - hidden behind the right door is a TiVo antenna only unit. All that equipment is powering a pair of KEF R3s fed with Kimber 8VS cables, with a pair of REL HT-1205 subwoofers. TV is wall mounted above it all.
I have since added my Schiit Jotunheim headphone amp and Schiit Bifrost II DAC to the top of the cabinet.
