New prayer plant leaves are strangely hydrophobic.

Although having been divided and replanted numerous times, this maranta leuconeura – aka prayer plant – is in effect more than thirty years old and is currently thriving like never before.

Named in honour of Augusta, Princess of Wales.

Maranta leuconeura erythroneuro - in the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, Brisbane.

The Sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica L.) is a creeping annual or perennial herb often grown for its curiosity value: the compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched, re-opening within minutes. Mimosa pudica is native to Brazil

I was amazed that it bloomed, and that the flowers are so delicate.

ich war überrascht, dass sie blühte, und dass die blüten so zart sind.

This is one of my beautiful new plants I took delivery of the other day - also known as a prayer plant, as the leaves fold upwards at night like praying hands. Loved the pink windows created by the light shining through them today.

Had a pretty relaxed Sunday - lots of catching up on photos, a fair bit of PS4, and not a huge amount else. A relaxed evening, too, with How to Train Your Dragon 2 :) (Still trying to pretend it's the Christmas holidays.)

Some plant info.

What a wonderful surprise! Blooming for the first time in more than 2 years and so timely - during the whole month of October, cheering my cheerless heart due to weeks of illness that included viral fever, flu, and ended with food poisoning with bouts of vomiting and diarrhea till last Sunday. Thank God, I am now fully recovered. Fingers still crossed! :-D

Hmm....still pretty after 6 weeks! Love the chocolaty hues. :)

I feed my plant my leftover coffee (yes, it works wonders - makes the leaves shiny green). Sometimes I pour in too much and it overflows - it did that yesterday and I put napkins all around it to soak it up off my desk and from inside the plate under the pot.

This was the results! I thought it looked pretty cool!

I asked what kind of plant this was.....

They said it was a Christmas Prayer Plant.

Bought this plant in the early 1970's, and have nurtured it ever since!!

This is the subject of the watercolor painting. On my patio. Houston, Texas. june 2008.

Just trying to show the new growth on my Prayer Plant. Not sure if I have succeeded or not. Some days you can almost see the new leaves unfurling.

At least I think that's what this is. I saw it at the garden center on Saturday and had to buy it.

The leaves are a rich burgundy underneath and curl up at night. A really nice plant.

My Prayer Plant (aka Rabbit Tracks) is propagating right now... every few days I see two or three tiny lavender blooms.

Called a "prayer plant" because of the way it folds its leaves up at night. I think "dancing plant" might be more appropriate.

The process of movement in response to light (but not towards light) is called "photonasty".

Pictures are from 13:30 to 18:40 the next day, so it covers 29 hours total.

I'm not sure why the tripod moved around during the day. I'm guessing the heat from the Sun made things expand and contract.

Calatheas are called "Prayer Plants" because they fold up their leaves at night.

This is a Calathea Picta Royale, shot once every 5 minutes, 7am to 7pm, for two days.

I thought my prayer plant had died, since all the leaves turned brown and fell off, but then a whole crop of new ones came up from the middle, and they brought flowers with them!
