Rostropovich had a colorful taste for humour (pranks & practical jokes). He also possessed a sentimental romantic quality in his life, in my humble opinion. With much consideration, I offer a relaxing interlude between acts of an imaginary performance of Britten's opera Billy Budd, taking place inside the real life Captain Cook's ship quarters with Rostropovich, Britten and Shostakovich, men who concerned themselves with the problems of humanity. In this intermission, there are however no more issues of country to deal with, no more earthly boundaries. Perhaps the only demarcations left are to be those of music. In this setting I propose two pastimes for the illustrious group:
1. a chest of viols (Rostropovich should play the tenor viol) would provide a more brutal time than anything happening above on the ship's deck, at least in terms of staying in tune, but I'm sure this expert group would surpass this minor problem.
2. the Captain's Mistress, a traditional dice game played at sea is transformed to a commemorative version 'Starship Enterprise' Camera, to broaden the spheres of time. In this camera the two captains (Captain James Cook and his fictional counterpart Captain James Kirk) represent mankind's hunger for exploration. A more ideal state of this myth can perhaps be alchemically synthesized by the real vs. the fictional here. The camera is enclosed within a gray-blue plastic shell that was used as the decor of the starship USS enterprise in the iconic TV series. At the top of the camera, the shell encloses an antique rosewood gambling table of the Ming Dynasty, replete with ivory and precious wood inlays for compartments to hold money sticks, dice, and other gambling paraphernalia. The side of the camera are antique faux leather bound book spines so that the entire camera can be stored on a bookshelf in either captain's quarters.
The actor and singer Shintaro Katsu reprising his own fictional role of the blind swordsman Ichi and representing the paradox of the power of the weak, is the dealer for the Captain's Mistress games, just as in his films. He entertains and moderates a competitive gambling game of dice on the seven seas.
As is my taste, I played with doubling, shifting and contrast in the style of Joseph Cornell for this design. I hope Rostropovich will at least be amused.

With just some fishing line and a smurf figurine my friend and I had the best prank ever. Well, when you're 11 it seemed like the best prank ever. When the daylight began to wane we'd place a smurf on the sidewalk with some very fine fishing line tied about its waist. Then hidden behind a basement window we'd wait for victims to approach. The second someone would stoop over to pick up the smurf we'd give the line a good yank and duck down behind the window. Girls always screamed the loudest. Best prank ever.

Elton John thought he was discussing with Russian president Vladimir Putin on the phone about gay rights, but it turns out that the other person on the line was a prankster who shared the same first name as the Russian leader.
The Kremlin had denied that the president had contacted the singer and hinted the call could have been a hoax.
Sir Elton, who had earlier criticised Putin for his "isolating and prejudiced" attitude, told Vladimir Krasnov: "Thank you, you have made my day. This day and this conversation were the most wonderful of my life." Krasnov, also known as Vonan, said that the prank call would be broadcast on the late night talk show on Russian state TV tonight.

On the night of the Halloween Bash, a couple of giggling mask wearers snuck into the Deputy Head Mistress Office to leave her some new portraits.
Somebody put soap in the fountain. This was nothing apparently. A lady I work with drove by it about an hour earlier than I did and there were huge mounds of suds blowing across the street and intersection. According to her, the police were standing there not knowing what to do. I drove by it at lunch and it was all gone.
