This was on a terrific day at the glorious Praia da Marinha, one of Europe's finest beaches. We've been there last year but it looked very different this time and the tide was out so we could spend hours at the sandy beaches enjoying the views. On a side note I was amazed by the sheer quantity of fossils within the sandstone. There were boulders packed full of fossilised clams, sponges, coral etc.

Praia da Marinha (in English: Navy Beach or Marinha Beach) is one of the most emblematic beaches of Portugal with a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, located on the Atlantic coast in Caramujeira, part of the Lagoa Municipality, Algarve, and considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe and as one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world.

In 1998, it was also awarded with the distinguished "Golden Beach" award by the Portuguese Ministry of the Environment because of its outstanding natural qualities. The fairly small golden sand beach nestles at the base of towering limestone cliffs, which have been eroded into unique formations, such as the double sea arch, by rainwater and winter storms. The beach also has some difficulty to get there, it is a little off the main road and the foot path takes a sharp descent downward. This beach is not only famous for its cliffs, but also for the quality of the turquoise sea waters. Google

Slowly working through more of the photos I took during our family vacation in April at the Algarve in Portugal. This is the clifftop view over stunning Praia da Marinha. On our visit last year the weather could not have been more different and when we came to this beach the waves were so high that there was no stretch of sand left. This year we spend a good few hours down at the beach and I took this coastal shot before we headed back.

Praia da Marinha was one of our favourite locations we visited on our holiday at the Algarve, Portugal. The beach is considered as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe. The foreboding sky, stormy sea and rays of light made it an impressive sight. I took quite a few more from those impressive cliffs so stay tuned ;-)
