A practical training in Taldara–Salamieh for 100 farmers from four villages. The training focused on regenerative agricultural practices, particularly the production of organic fertilizer using olive tree pruning waste, crop residues, and solid olive press residues (pomace), along with sheep and cow manure. This initiative comes in response to increasing drought and climate change challenges in Syria, aiming to equip farmers within the olive value chain with sustainable, chemical-free alternatives that enhance soil health and long-term productivity. Through technical guidance and continuous mentorship, the Foundation supports farmers in adopting environmentally responsible practices that strengthen agriculture, food security, and climate resilience.
This activity is part of the Road to Resilience (R2R) project, which aims to enhance agricultural and livestock productivity by providing sustainable inputs to farmers and strengthening the capacity of farmers and farming communities through technical assistance. This aims to encourage and promote regenerative agriculture practices. This activity is funded and implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation.
As part of the Climate Change Initiative (CLI), funded and implemented by AKF, a practical field training was conducted on 28 April 2025 in Salamieh – Al-Muzeraa, targeting 25 farmers from one village. The objective of the activity was to train farmers on how to predict insect infestations using light traps, enabling them to carry out pest control operations at the optimal time. This training is a key component of the olive value chain and contributes to improving pest management practices among local farmers. The activity also supports CLI’s broader goal of providing technical support, including mentorship services, to promote regenerative farming practices and co-create interventions for climate change mitigation and adaptation. These interventions include renewable energy, biodiversity promotion, sustainable water management, forest regeneration, solar irrigation linked to livestock, drip irrigation systems for crops, and water reuse and rainwater harvesting to maximize resource efficiency.
As part of the Climate Change Initiative (CLI), AKF implemented a field day activity on April 24, 2025, in Al Bahdalieh village, Salamieh, Hama Governorate, targeting 30 agricultural engineers. The purpose of the activity was to provide training on the production of wood vinegar and biochar, with the goal of equipping participants with practical knowledge on how to produce these organic materials. The training also included evaluating the impact of wood vinegar on soil quality, plant growth, and pest control, while promoting sustainable agricultural practices among local communities. This activity forms part of the broader objectives of the Climate Change Initiative, which provides technical support and mentorship services to farmers to encourage regenerative farming practices and co-designed interventions for climate mitigation and adaptation. These include renewable energy, biodiversity promotion, sustainable water management, forest regeneration, solar irrigation linked to livestock, drip irrigation for crops, and the reuse of water and rainwater harvesting to enhance overall efficiency. This activity was fully funded and implemented by AKF.

The training aimed to enhance olive production through a comprehensive, integrated approach over five years, with specific goals to increase yield, improve the quality of olive oil, and ensure sustainable practices, while also working to enhance farmers’ standard of living and income. To achieve this, the field training focused on teaching farmers how to graft olive trees using good, drought-tolerant, more productive, and pest- and disease-resistant varieties. Through this activity, farmers were equipped with essential skills to adopt a sustainable approach to olive production. This training is part of a broader effort under the Climate Change Initiative (CLI), which provides technical support and mentorship services to promote regenerative farming practices and co-create mitigation and adaptation interventions, including renewable energy, biodiversity promotion, sustainable water management, forest regeneration, solar irrigation linked to livestock, drip systems for crops, and the reuse of water and rainwater harvesting to maximize efficiency.
