This piece is very self-explanatory it is "A practical guide to suicide". Each image shows an action that is associated with a short list of instructions and "what you will need" tips. The idea was to use imagery that wasn't cliché, for example the "cutting". The first idea that crossed my mind was to have a razor blade with blood all over the place, but this looked far too over the top. Having said that, the red did break up the dark colours of the imagery. So the photos were re-taken with the model wearing red lipstick and red nails. The order the images are placed in offers a contrast between the colours, one has an element of red, then the next will not, the following photo has red. This pattern offers unity between the elements in a sort of pattern. The inspiration for this piece came mostly from personal experience. When I was growing up I went through a depressed phase as I searched for who I was and I succeeded many times in hurting myself both physically and mentally. This piece is a cynical development that came from a cynical sarcastic thought that crossed my mind during a self harm moment, the thought being "if only there were instructions to doing it right". This thought progressed in my mind and, although I never developed the idea on paper, (mostly because I was scared to tell people what was going on in my mind) it constantly developed in my head. After around six months of contemplating this idea, I finally decided to make it a reality.
To give you an idea, a typical day at L'Abri is half work, half study. It's
amazing how smoothly the community functions, with everyone assuming
responsibility for one or two duties each day and doing his/her little bit to
help. I choose to do my assigned chore(s) in the morning, then spend the
afternoon reading, listening to audio tapes, journaling, etc. Usually, I
have indoor chores, like helping prepare the lunch meal, cleaning the Manor
House, or cataloging the library. Last Wednesday, though, I spent the
morning transplanting 20 or so box trees from one garden bed to another, then
thoroughly weeding each bed. After, Andrew Fellows, one of the workers,
remarked, 'Well, when you come back in 15 years with your four or five
children, you'll spot a certain hedge and be able to say, 'Look kids, I
planted that!'' An exciting thought! (Four of five children, though...
hmmm...) Attached is a photo of my box trees.
There are four sets of families (the Fellows, with their four children; the
Bradshaws, with their four children; the Pauls, with their two little
boys; and the Drydens, with their son) and two single women, both in their
thirties, that live on the property here. The workers take turns hosting the
students for lunch and dinner discussions, and each student is matched with a
worker, who serves as the student's tutor for the duration of his/her stay at
L'Abri. The meals here are always hearty and satisfying, and interesting
conversation on any variety of subjects always surrounds the table. One
always interrupts one's morning or afternoon work/study for the tea break,
accompanied by volleyball and ultimate frisbee (incidentally, by the end of
the day, I've usually had at least five or six cups of tea, as tea always
follows the meals as well).
I've been amazed by the ethos of this place and by how the workers seek to
demonstrate Christianity on a daily basis by how they open their homes and
lives, sacrifice their previous income to living on donations alone, and
their patience with an influx of students who come and go, term after term.
Another work/study day, Day Thirteen, begins. I'm meeting with my tutor Dawn
again today and am looking forward to gaining even more insight into myself,
the truth, and the meaning behind things.

Yet another use for Lego; I built this so that I would not need weights to keep my 8-port Gbit switch from being pulled off the shelf by cable-strain.
This is an incredibly useful book. A lot of the art it describes is, of course, still there.
