A minimalistic study while I'm preparing our move from Sri Lanka to Europa. Today we have 10 hours powercut.
A souvenir of Storm Arwen. 6 days and 5 nights with no power meant we had to become quite inventive! Lighting was a big problem as the nights were long and dark, and we kept some curtains drawn all day as it was freezing outside. We had one big powerful torch that we stood on end pointing to the ceiling - it gave the room the best general lighting. Needless to say I played with it taking photos of the shadows it cast. This was shining the torch up through a vase of flowers, and trying to make out animals or faces in the cast shadows.
Happy Monochrome Thursday 😊
B/W Tinted and Mono Here
Two nights. Two storms, one after the other. Malik and Corrie, wreaking destruction across the north of Scotland.
I didn't want to go. I was tired from listening to the shrieking wind as it howled through the night, occasionally making the house shake, worrying when the next powercut would come, or piece of roof fly off, or tree come down against the house.
This would be my fifth trip to Inverness in the last week or so, and it is roughly three hours each way. But there might be snow too.
But as I left, with warnings about the sky falling on my head, I had an inkling the dawn sky might be different after two violent storms. And so it was, just for one brief moment as I crossed over the old Shiel bridge to the Moss. This is where the 27km long Loch Shiel enters the river that flows out to the sea. The large hill/mountain in the distance is Resipole. I call it 'home'
Had a 9 hour powercut last night..... What else was there to do other than take photos in the dark... :D
Who would ever have thought that inspiration would come during a power outage?
This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a weekly challenge called “Snap Happy”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each week, and the image is to be posted on the Monday of the week.
This week the theme, “yellow” was chosen by Andrew,
On Tuesday night, we had a power outage when a white, lowered utility drove into the power pole across the street from me. Who would have imagined that something yellow would come out of the pitch black? It did: the gleaming yellow light of a candle as we waited for the power to be restored.
Well last night was a bit of a disaster:-
Heavy rain and high winds resulted in a "power cut" as I was cooking the evening meal for my 95 year old mother in law.
So out with the torches and the camping stove.
NOW you should NOT put a gas camping stove too close to an electric toaster!
Working by torch light means that only one spot is illuminated at a time, so while retrieving some ingredients (pepper) from the cupboard I noticed an odd yellow flicker out of the corner of my eye. I should have turned round more quickly - but no I got the pepper out of the cupboard before turning round.
Burning plastic is harder to extinguish than I expected.
Oh well it could have been a lot worse.
(I would have expected the plastic on a toaster to be fire resistant).
Stay safe.
.....another is opened.
That day Ganapathy, my son, was busy preparing for his exams. Suddenly there was a powercut and it was too dark to read inside.I expected him to relax. But he got up and dashed to the front room, opened the doors of the window facing the street and started reading using the window itself as his table. When we were groping in the dark to find some matches and candle, he was comfortable with his new place.
Certainly, when one door is closed another is opened.

I think that this is the end photo of this short series. The 25/07/2007 at 18:12, there was light in my home. 57 hours without electricity. Nevertheless, the damage not yet is repaired, and can have futures blackouts.

Remember Storm Malik and Corrie? I mentioned previously how when we had a powercut I had gone to the little shop at Glenuig to try to get some gas. I had noticed several big plastic floats used to support the fish cages that are so commonplace in every bit of open water round here, washed up on the shore and the two or three usual fishing boats from Glenuig being tossed about on their moorings offshore.
So when I passed the little jetty today and saw a fisherman there I decided to stop for a chat, out of admiration for the work they do going out to sea in all sorts of weather.
He might have been dour and dull, but he wasn't. Like most of the people I have stopped to chat with, he wasn't a born and bred local. No, he was Max Fradders, as he is known, originally from Fulwood, Preston. And no village idiot either. The son of a school teacher I quickly found that he had an expletive laden view on almost everything, and despite living in the back o'beyond, was as in touch with the outer world as you could imagine, at the top of his game on world economics, business, politics, the environment, science, etc, etc. He had spent most of his life living in yurts, tents, a circus showman's caravan, carriages, for he was one of life's caravan warriors, protesting against, and fighting for so many public and private causes. He was a rebel, a rouser, a usurper, an agitator, and trouble maker with a lengthy criminal tab, banning him from travel to so many countries. But he was happy now, just minding his own business, living the simple life as a fisherman...mainly langostines. He would make a brilliant politician with his no-nonsense talk. But he wants a wife.
He had a small problem this morning. His fishing boat had sunk. But he had had the foresight to name it "Happy Return" and with the help of some mates and some pumps they had got her refloated. She's there, in my photo, looking a little guilty with herself at the bottom of the jetty, and Frad was busy trying to sort out the drowned engine. I apologised for taking up his time and distracting him from more urgent matters, but "No" he said, he enjoyed talking and chatting. And he said, not enough people go out of their way to talk to strangers. That made me feel good.

Second night of the "Big Blackout". This it is the aspect of my street at dusk. While I take this photo, dozens of people strikes saucepans in their balconies as protest signal. By the radio they comment that the Sagrada Familia (4 streets of my home), is perfectly illuminated. A group of neighbors of another affected district has cut of the most important streets of the city, the Meridiana Avenue.

Western Power working this afternoon to restore power in our area after storm Arwen blew down some overhead cables. 1313 properties were affected from 9:30 am and power was finally restored to everyone at 3:06 pm ( though most of us had it back by midday). This was the final piece of the jigsaw.

In the USA this would be known as a "power outage" .
Fortunately it wasn't dark outside and it only lasted about 15 minutes. When I first moved to the village it used to happen a lot, Now they are a fairly rare annoyance.
A power outage (also called a powercut, a power out, a power failure, a power blackout, a power loss, or a blackout) is the loss of the electrical power network supply to an end user.
There are many causes of power failures in an electricity network. Examples of these causes include faults at power stations, damage to electric transmission lines, substations or other parts of the distribution system, a short circuit, cascading failure, fuse or circuit breaker operation.

However, this picture was taken during a national blackout. It is a very long exposure along with a Speedlite on full power.
I was amazed with the number of stars visible during a power cut. Light pollution was minimal at this time.

Had to do this one twice, thanks to a powercut that struck last night when a nearby electricity substation caught fire. Needless to say I hadn't backed up my work. We spent the evening by candle light, listening to the cacophony of confused burglar alarms.
Back to smaller uploads now I've returned to work (and we've already had a couple of powercuts tonight).
I think ithis is a 1200, but I'm happy to be corrected if it's a 1000.
A few days ago we had a "power cut" (power outage).
It made me think of taking pictures with very little light. Photography with a candle and a torch.
You have to stay very still

today i made a ginger bread house. or attempted to. i'm not perfectionist enough to do it well. then we had a powercut (how much longer is this storm going to go on for?) and then i did some drawing. i never draw, but it's calming.
luckily got my photo for today taken yesterday before the rain started
trying to catch up now, honest <3
I returned to Flickr during a 2 and a half day powercut and I no internet access, here are some pictures before and after the storm

Back from our trip to Gloucester, Cheltenham and Chipping Norton. I think I said I was hoping for hoar frost this morning - instead, we had a power cut last night. The cottage was very cold when we arrived so we had put on the central heating and lit a fire in the wood burning stove . . . the power cut took the central heating with it and the film we we watching, so I thought I'd take a photo of what was left . . . pretty eh?!
hope to catch up with you all soon . . .

Are you feeling the pinch in austerity Britain? Counting the pennies? Tightening your belt? Can you even afford a belt to tighten? And what's YOUR long term economic plan?!!!

And Helen... this is my submission to the "DARKNESS" photo challenge.
Die Fensterscheiben klirren, der Tisch vibriert, alle haben Angst. Es kracht, es blitzt, aber kein Regen fällt.
Kurzschluss, Stromausfall, es kracht schon wieder.
Taschenlampe an. Zittern. Die Hunde jaulen vor Angst. Ruhig bleiben .............
In diesen Sekunden der Panik entstand das Foto eines unvergesslichen Momentes.
The windows are rattling, the table is vibrating, everyone is scared. There's a crash, lightning, but no rain.
Short circuit, power failure, there's another crash.
Flashlight on. Trembling. The dogs howl in fear. Stay calm .............
This photo of an unforgettable moment was taken during these seconds of panic.

There was another dozen powercuts today and they're starting to annoy me so much that I plucked my eyeballs out and fried them with ginger.
Well not really....but it looks like I did. :oP
So this might be a new thing. Character evolutions, where they started all the way up to how they end. Came up with this through experimenting with different looks for the Joker, and before I knew it, I had six stages of his life. If I'm honest, this doesn't really need to be the overlords version, but I just thought this would be a nice way to flesh out characters that we won't see in the main story (he said, with little intention to come back to the main story). So, I'll only do a little bit of story, as I haven't really got that much for the Joker. Maybe future uploads like this'll have more, who knows. So, let's get on with it (L to R)
Failed comedian
Things weren't going well for Jack Napier. 30, unmarried, and a complete failure. Despite all this, he continued performing at the comedy club, earning what he could. Pittance. He took little joy from his work, often booed off stage and having drinks thrown at him. But there was something deep down inside him. A fire had been lit.
The Laughing man
Jack stood in the alley, drenched from head to toe. But he didn't care. The blood on his gloved hands, the rain dripping down his nose, none of this bothered him. He felt...empowered, like he could take on the world. He stood over his victim, a barmaid from the comedy club. She'd laughed at him. Not at his jokes no, but when a patron walked up to the stage and poured his drink over Jack. That was it. He snapped, and left. But not before swinging by the kitchen to take up a blade. This would be the first of many murders by the one referred, in hush tones, as 'The laughing man'
Arkham
After only months, Jack had been caught. There was a new force in Gotham, with a violent streak. The Batman. Jack had been caught, and there was nothing he could do about it. and yet he could not stop laughing. He was found criminally insane, and sentenced to life in The Arkham asylum for the criminally insane. And so that is where he remained, forging a new identity. This all came to fruition when a powercut, seemingly random, gave Jack the perfect opportunity for escape. He painted his face in the blood of a slain guard, and walked out, into the darkness, free again.
A gift for the Mayor
Now fully immersed in his new identity, the Joker set about making people laugh. First was the reservoir poisoning. Then came the laughing fish. But Christmas '92, that was the year the year the Joker became the most feared and talked about criminal in Gotham. It was the height of the Christmas celebration, and the countdown had just begun. despite the numerous threats the Joker had sent the Mayor, he had been ignored. This infuriated him. Still, at least this way he would get to enact his plan. 10 Boxes around Gotham Plaza began to tick. 9. People cheered excitedly, anticipating the firework show. 8. Latches began to unfasten 7. Batman found the van the Joke was watching the whole scene unfurl from. 6. The lids opened. 5. Batman beat the Joker, but got no answers. 4. Confetti shot out of the boxes. 3. Pink smoke hissed out of the boxes. 2. People standing near to the boxes began to fall to the ground 1. The boxes exploded, sending great plumes of pink smoke high into the air, spreading across the plaza, in an instant. 0. The laughter began. A terrible laughter. The laughter of everyone in Gotham Plaza, politicians, police, everyone, driven mad by the Jokers newest diabolical experiment: Laughing gas.
Jason Todd
It was hard to top the Christmas incident, Joker knew he'd have to pull something pretty spectacular to really get in Batmans head. Surviving the millennium war was an achievement in itself, but the Joker still wasn't fulfilled. He needed to see Batman driven truly mad. And so he hatched a plot. A devilishly clever plot, or so he thought. He laid a trap, and the new Robin sprung it perfectly. After two days of torture, the boy spilled all the juicy details. Including the best thing the Joker could possibly ask for: Batman was Bruce Wayne.
Incarceration
After the murder of Jason, the Joker was finished. His last hurrah. Though he'd initially gotten away with it, it was the first Robin, Huntress, who had been his downfall. She'd captured him, beat him, and he was pretty sure she was going to kill him. Until Batman got in the way. He'd gotten his wish. He had driven a wedge between the dynamic duo, a wedge that drove Huntress to join the regime. Batman stood over him, saddened at the decision of his former sidekick, but with a fire in his eyes. A burning anger that had been burning since the Joker took Jason from him. He picked up the crowbar, and beat the Joker with it. Beat him until he was a bloody mess, quivering on the ground. And then...he left. There were footsteps outside, and the Joker was bundled into the back of a car. He woke up a month later, in the new 'Arkham institute for the rehabilitation of the mentally unstable', which is where he resides to this day. he doesn't talk much, just the occasional wittering about bats and clowns.
So that's the full story of the Joker. It was fun coming up with a full story for him, don't often get to a do a story from start to finish like this. So, as always, lemme know what you think, and if you'd like to see more evolution stories like this in the future :D
