I did this steep section standing up (dancing up the climb), which my old legs haven’t allowed me to do for a year or more. Which felt delicious. My little Spiderwort that I water when I pass through is just below the handlebars (flowers obscured). 56 years since the first time up this climb with Dad!
Ostomy is a tried and tested way to manage your waste excretion in case you are unable to do it through the natural bodily mechanism. But for many years, #ostomates remained worried about what would follow the ostomy surgery. I am talking about carrying the bag which collects urine or stool. Concealing that bag under the clothes is not something very difficult, but leakage and odor had really been the real concerns.
An ostomy mainly involves collection of bodily wastes through a #stoma which appears through the opening made in the abdominal wall. This stoma has to be exposed to the bag’s inner chamber where the stool or urine has to go. Leakage, which can also result odor emanating from the person with ostomy, can be quite a concern here. Aside from the odor, this leakage can cause irritation in the peristomal skin, skin around the stoma. The immediate disadvantage of this irritation is continuous pain and the ostomate’s overall inability to ensure better adhesion between the pouching system and the skin where pouching system has to be attached.
Thankfully, modern technology has been able to address this issue in quite an effective manner. If you talk about the supplies that were available a decade ago, you may argue their about inability to help you with the better ostomy management in a post-surgery scenario. But it is not the case anymore. You can manage your ostomy in much better way today. Modern technology has surely been very helpful but it has only a partly contribution to make in a case of successful ostomy management. The other half that you are going to have to work on is to make sure that you stay in contact with your ostomy care nurses. They are people who are equipped with every bit of information which you can use not only to prevent any issues with your ostomy but also to bring back things to normal in case you have got affected by any problem that tends to make the ostomy management a difficult affair.
The big reason why you need to consult your ostomy care nurse to get your #ostomy related issues addresses is that there are too many supplies available out there; and you don’t really have an idea what works best for you. For instance, there can be different pouching systems available for colostomy management; and each of those systems works in a specific way to benefit a specific type of colostomy case. Surely you don’t want to get confused here. All you have to do is to call your nurse for an appointment and ask them what solution will be the most suitable for you.
A very important part of your ostomy management is to have good knowledge about the suppliers from whom you can get your supplies shipped at your doorstep. That’d be great if there is a physical store nearby your residence. You can walk into the store and look through different options to pick one that is suitable for you. But adequate information about the suppliers can be more useful for you because it can give you the peace of mind while traveling away from your home.

matea had to undergo anesthetic yesterday at the orthodogtist for dental x-rays.
a couple of minor chips (which i know she got when i stupidly fed beef bones 9 years ago when i first started feeding raw ... she's got one cavity which he's not concerned about, and a hairline crack in one molar (again, probably sustained when i stupidly fed beef bones). she's also got more than a half dozen double-rooted teeth whose roots are being absorbed by the bone -- "tooth resorption" -- and there's no way knowing how long this has been going on, how fast it will proceed, and whether they will also have to be pulled in the future.
but the main reason i put her through this is because she has a dead upper canine and pre-canine ... most likely caused by impact/trauma.
even though she might have been able to go through life with these dead teeth, i didn't want to risk them causing a problem down the road, when she's even older.
and instead of extractions, i opted for root canal as being less invasive, with no healing required.
she got me up twice last night to go out. merrick was the same way when he went through this a couple of weeks ago ... and pooped in the house overnight. they really should indicate in the post-op material that most dogs can get the runs. :(
last night she was having major problems with her lip getting caught between the now-shorter top canine and the lower, to the point where she was almost puncturing it. she just couldn't get her lip over it. although it's still swollen this morning from the damage, she seems to have better control over the lip.
i hope we don't have to go through anything like this again ... even though it wasn't horrible, i really hate putting an older dog under.
next on the agenda, matea needs a button tumor removed off her back leg which is scraping open constantly. we're hoping it can be done with just local anesthetic instead of having to put her fully under. we'll see ...
oh, and i should add: this 10 yr old dog required NO cleaning ... and even though i highly doubt the orthodogtist has ever said that about any other 10 yr old dog in his years of practice, i still got read the riot-act when it comes to raw feeding.
Well, after countless years of constant pain and frequent dislocations, Dave finally caved in and had some knee surgery on Friday.
He survived the GA, and the procedure went smoothly. He'll be off work for a few weeks, and having finally shaken my cold I went round to see him tonight.
This is the knee in question. Swollen, red, iodine stained, bruised and dressed - it nevertheless works pretty much as it should and he's not in constant crippling agony. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. :)

Staphylococcus aureus /ˌstæf.ə.ləˈkɒ.kəs ˈoɹˌiː.əs/, literally "Golden Cluster Seed" and also known as golden staph, is the most common cause of staph infections. It is a spherical bacterium, frequently living on the skin or in the nose of a person. Approximately 20–30% of the general population are "staph carriers". Staphylococcus aureus can cause a range of illnesses from minor skin infections, such as pimples, impetigo (may also be caused by Streptococcus pyogenes), boils, cellulitis folliculitis, furuncles, carbuncles, scalded skin syndrome and abscesses, to life-threatening diseases, such as pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis endocarditis, Toxic shock syndrome (TSS), and septicemia. Its incidence is from skin, soft tissue, respiratory, bone, joint, endovascular to wound infections. It is still one of the four most common causes of nosocomial infections, often causing postsurgical wound infections. Abbreviated to S. aureus or Staph aureus in medical literature, S. aureus should not be confused with the similarly named (and also medically relevant) species of the genus Streptococcus.
S. aureus was discovered in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1880 by the surgeon Sir Alexander Ogston in pus from surgical abscesses. Each year some 500,000 patients in American hospitals contract a staphylococcal infection.

You can see the melanoma on her right shoulder. That means early 1950s while we were in our first Ingleside house. Probably 1952-1953 because we moved back to Colley Avenue somewhere around 1953 to build the new house. I remember her doing her postsurgical exercises in the new house. She would walk her fingers up the wall trying to regain mobility in her right arm. She eventually made it, and will turn 88 in January 2011.

My project focuses on postsurgical diagnostics. And since we focus on electronic free naked eye detection it is of paramount importance to use bright and vivid colors. This allows the readout to be easily distinguishable from the environment. To do so we employ structural colors like the ones shown in this picture. They differ from regular colors by the mechanism in which the color is produced. Structural colors interact with light through a physical mechanism. In our case the structural coloring agent forms nanosized helices that reflect light through Bragg reflection. The light reflected is dependent on the scale of the nanostructure. In our case, the influx of water, as a result of disease driven material degradation, changes color as it pushes the structures further apart. With this a gradual shift from blue via green to red can be obtained that allows us to obtain information on the patients’ health and recovery status.
