First Territorial Capitol of Kansas - Antique Postcard by zadalew

This building is extant and serves as an historical site of the Kansas State Historical Society. It is on the Fort Riley, Kansas post. It is temporairly closed due to funding issues, but hopefully will be back in operation soon.

 

It is the site of a very brief, but very troubled period in Kansas Territorial history. I will be adding more photos of it and recounting some of the details in with those photos.

Post Office pillar box number BB1012 in front of Banbury Town Hall

 

The fluted design for the Birmingham and Southern District dates from 1856, the design being modified in 1857 to incorporate what was to become the conventional horizontal posting slot. This particular pillar is though to date from 1856 and was awarded Grade II listed building status on 14th February slot.

This particular pillar is dates from 1857 and was moved to its present location after restoration on 25th November 1974. It was awarded Grade II listed building status on 14th February 1986

Originally called the United States Customhouse and Post Office it was designed by Alfred B. Mullett and opened in 1884. Built in the French Second Empire style, it is one of only three of Mullett's remaining federal office buildings. Other similarly designed buildings were demolished in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati. Today it anchors the Old Post Office Plaza district and houses the Missouri Court of Appeals, a branch of the St. Louis Public Library, and half of Webster University's downtown campus.
