Hatch Show Print is a postermaking shop on Nashville's Broadway st. They print in a distinctive graphic style, setting letters by hand in an old fashion process that hasn't changed in a century. They still create custom, limited run prints for all shows at the neighbouring Ryman.

Moulin Rouge, La Goulue

Artist: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, Albi 1864–1901 Saint-André-du-Bois)

Printer: Affiches Américaines, Charles Lévy (Paris)

Date: 1891

“When the brassy dance hall and drinking garden of the Moulin Rouge opened on the boulevard de Clichy in 1889, one of Lautrec's paintings was displayed near the entrance. He himself became a conspicuous fixture of the place and was commissioned to create the six-foot-tall advertisement that launched his postermaking career and made him famous overnight. He turned a spotlight on the crowded dance floor of the nightclub and its star performers, the "boneless" acrobat Valentin le Désossé and La Goulue, "the glutton," whose cancan skirts were lifted at the finale of the chahut.”

“Moulin Rouge, La Goulue was Toulouse-Lautrec’s first commissioned poster, created to advertise the performance of dancer La Goulue and acrobat Valentin le Désossé at the iconic Montmartre dance hall. With thousands of copies pasted around Paris, the poster was an instant success, propelling Toulouse-Lautrec into the artistic limelight and attracting numerous commissions from other performers and cabaret owners. In this image, Toulouse-Lautrec captured the exhilarating experience of being onstage, but he also designed a composition that traps La Goulue in her spectacle: between the bright yellow stage lights, the anonymous silhouetted crowd, and the provocatively posed Valentin.”

Paris based street artist, Space Invader, has invaded the world with his small mosiacs featuring his Space Invader characters. To make this print, featuring an invader I first made a 15mm x 15mm vinyl block. Then I made a handle and glued that to the block. Next I ruled up the paper into a grid and worked out the placement of the colours, then I printed each block using the little vinyl print - hoping I did not make any mistakes. This is poster #4 in my project to create 52 posters using the media favoured by street artists during 2013. #4/52

Fans of the movie star Rajnikanth put together a movie poster at Raja talkies, Krishnagiri

- Now Showing: Einthiran (2010), Tamil

Motivation for this one came during a night-time scooter ride with my little grand-daughter. During the ride I showed her Jupiter in the night sky. Later, during the scoot, she looked up and said, 'Jupiter looks after the stars and two girls'. So here we are, on our scooters, scooting along the river walk at Bulimba, with the city in the background and the river beside us. I used the little 15mm vinyl stamp to make this poster, which occupies place #5 in my year-long project to create 52 posters, created using street artist media. #5/52

Anger talks about the art of postermaking, featuring a gotta-hear bit ("Embracing pop culture, Jonas Brothers, and notes on postermaking") about the Jonas Brothers.

Q&A with film critic Dennis Lim as part of An Evening With Kenneth Anger, late March 2010 during the 48th Ann Arbor Film Festival.

A different day, but still at Newton, at the house on 72nd, rented by Brent and Debbie. Many people came and went, says Debbie, including Louie and Randy, who both lived there at different times, and eventually, the rental was taken over by Bob and Katherine.

Our advertising effort to get kids to come to the camp focussed on the local high schools. This is Randy, working on a poster. I did a poster too, but frankly, it sucked, so I haven't bothered to reproduce it here. But the picture gives a good idea of the arts and crafts flavour of the whole project.

Somewhere I have some black and whites of us going to a high school to meet with and talk with potential campers, and I will try to look it out, and add it to the collection.

I'm not sure what is going on with the postermaking here, but one of my photos doesn't appear when I made the poster. It isn't a new post, but it won't put the picture there only the date and number. So weird.

Thanks so much everyone.
