Papilio (Pterourus) troilus Linnaeus 1758

The spicebush swallowtail butterfly, Papilio troilus

entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/bfly/spicebush_swallowtail.htm

Linnaeus, is one of our most beautiful and interesting swallowtails. It is relatively common in natural areas and flower gardens throughout the eastern and parts of the mid-western United States. Larvae, pupae and adults are great examples of adaptive coloration. A male spicebush swallowtail was featured on the third butterfly stamp (issued January, 2013) in the U.S. Postal Service’s series of stamps for large greeting cards that require additional postage.

Not as common as some in my life, but a have had a few in God's garden over the years. Saw one at Mead Botanical Garden In Winter Park years ago ... I think that was my first.

progress, yes. slow progress? yeeeeessss. wow, this thing is taking forever! i get so excited when i lay all of the blocks on the bed, and then it shrinks like mad when i get them all sewn together! darn you, seam allowances!

to date, this quilt top is now a little larger than twin sized. since i'm going for a queen (ack!), i'll probably be working on this one on and off for another year. i'm pretty thrilled with the result so far, though!

Found this little gem while walking around Crewe.

Remember when postage was only 2 cents? Congrats if you do because you could be over 100 years old. From 1919 until 1932, United States postage was only 2 cents (per ounce).

I love how it says for only $1.25 a month and a few cents more for postage :)

I am thinking of adding a 12" white border all the way around...

This has 3,000 1.5" squares. 100 are in each color block.:)

!!!!!!!!!!!

I made this just for me. I started it almost one year ago. It is throw sized for the couch (56" x 72"). This has been a very good way for me to "catalog" a ton of prints that I love. There are also some uglies thrown in for good measure. At one point I thought I would regret doing that, but I don't.

Chawne/Cauchy09 posted one of these a while back and that lit the fire.

I am making another scrappy top for Kelly's My Precious QAL using 5 inch squares of fabric that I love. (My prerequisite for choosing fabric for that quilt is that I have to LOVE every square I use.) I want to make that quilt the same size as this one. So, the minimalist in me is telling me that I should just use both tops and make one reversible quilt. But the quilter in me is telling me to make two separate "companion" quilts. Not sure. Right now, the minimalist is winning out.

Ivenacker Eichen Natural Monument

Parks | Plants (Flora) | Trees

Commemorative,

110 ct - Euro cent

As the first National Natural Monument, the Ivenack oaks are a special cultural and natural historical feature. They are among the oldest trees in Germany and have a special symbolic power. The Ivenack oaks, which are presumably about 1,000 years old, are witnesses to the widespread land use form of the Hude (herding) forest in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, cattle were driven into the surrounding forests to graze. By eating off the growth, some trees were able to develop particularly well. Thus, in the Hudewald area of 164 ha, one can find about 240 strong trees, mainly oaks. The strongest oak has a diameter of 3.49 m, a height of 35.5 m and a timber volume of about 180 fm. It is therefore the strongest and oldest living oak in Germany and probably in Central Europe.

I almost hesitate to post this...this was taken with my first digital camera, a Sony CD1000 (on low resolution to boot!) Anyway, I was just north of Marshfield, WI on Mann Rd when this one unit wonder came by. I can't remember if these are coal empties from Weston or ore empties headed back to the range. Oh how I wished I had set the camera to the right image size!

An old piling....half in, half out! HSS
