The historic post office in Elkhorn, West Virginia along U.S. 52 and Norfolk Southern's Pocahontas District, former Norfolk & Western mainline on a quiet autumn morning in Southern Appalachia.
Located deep in the hollers of McDowell County and the Pocahontas Coalfield, this small German siding structure has been the community's post office since its establishment in March of 1888. Elkhorn began as a coal mine camp along Elkhorn Creek, operated by the Crozer Coal & Coke Company until the mine's closure in 1954. Even with the downfall of coal production, there are still several coal mine loadouts in the area, continuously loading Norfolk Southern coal drags for the Port of Virginia.

Scavenger Challenge - 25. Last month, we delicately applied post-processing to improve our photos. This month, we're going to take that a step further and render an image into an artistic version using a heavier hand. Again, photos should be presented as a diptych, side by side for comparison. The challenge you face here is to create something which is visually appealing to a general audience, NOT a garish, over-the-top alteration. Two options to consider: stylizing (rendering as a painting or sketch) or adding a texture to your original image. There are hundreds of other ways you might wish to explore. Pick one which works best for your subject!
I picked a little tweeking with the lighting highlighs and contract and them put a colour dodge filter over the top to bring the colours out more - too much? - no I don't think so. I think the original was incorrectly exposed at f4.5, exp 1/10, ISO 1600 so I fixed it.
