Photographers flock to Varanasi to meet the Naga Babas. I too wanted to meet and see them for myself. Having seen numerous photos, I was wondering how I would deal with the nakedness. Turns out you felt nothing, it was all just normal. I bumped into this group on the eve of Shivaratri. In Varanasi, they walk from Varuna ghat up to Assi Ghat during Shivaratri, you meet some interesting chracters then. Including one who stood in front of me, stared at my face and went ka ha? He sat next to me for a long time just staring and then tried to follow me back. Good thing a local chased him away.
Anyway I found this group as I was walking past Harichandra ghat. He was so engrossed in the song he was singing I had to sit and watch. He had such a beautiful voice, it was transfixing to watch him. Two days later he caught up with me at another ghat and tried to get me to go to his tent. it was a good thing i didnt know Hindi. I had come to Varanasi wanting to meet them, but I ended up being the chased one instead. Sadhus would walk up to me and bless me, the baba's would call me over and try to talk to me. I would politely say no and they would still call, everyday that they saw me. My mom was totally freaked out by it. But that wasnt the reason I never really photographed them, I simply didnt find the life of varanasi in them. To me they were just another person.
