This Fiddler Crab was tiny, I almost stood on him on a path in the Port St Lucie. I used the close focus of the 200-400 along with a 1.4x TC on a D300 to get this close up of the little fella!
Please visit my photography blog for a look at what I am getting up to with the camera on a regular basis.
Today is the start of the 2012 Tour de France which is an event that we look forward to every year.
See, Tom and my daughter have raced bicycles for well over a decade - track, mountain cross country, time trials, road crits, and of course, road races. For years I sat on the sidelines - or should I say, ran on the sidelines in the various feed zones - in support of their efforts. I know that as an athlete, hearts race, muscles burn, and bodies ache from this much heated competition, but that's not to say that the spectators go away unscathed.... as i think that it's a thrill a minute watching the fast action.
This image is from the 2011 Florida Police & Fire Games road cycling race, held in Port St. Lucie. This particular event was the criterium race, affectionately referred to as the "crit", where the racers make numerous loops on the road course. As a spectator, it's more exciting to watch as you can generally see much of the goings on over and over.
In a traditional road race, such as the Tour, the race goes from point A to point B. Once they race past you at "point somewhere in between", that's it for you.... unless of course, you're lucky enough to be in the pace car! Can you imagine that in the Tour the spectators arrive days before, stake their viewing spot, and wait .... and wait .... and wait for an event that goes by in less time than it took me to write up this post? Amazing, huh? But they love their cycling at the Tour and I'm sure a great time is had by all. One day, I would love to be able to attend it in person. You know, be one of those "crazies". I promise though that I will not run up the side of the steep mountaintop dressed in some bizarre costume....LOL. I did attend the final race day of the Tour de California (AMGEN) once .... crowds, noise, energy, and of course, total fun!
So, let the Tour begin! Wishing it to be a safe one, full of excitement, surprises, heroics, personal feats of victory, and a tour without the dirty side - of which I'm referring to illegal drug issues.
Have a great weekend everyone. Thanks for stopping by to view and really appreciate all of your comments as well.

Ok, so for those of you who live under a rock and haven't heard of the MTV reality show "Jersey Shore" that the young adults are crazy over..... "The Situation" (left) whose real name is Mike Sorrentino, threw out the first pitch at Tradition Field (now known as Digital Domain Park) in Port St. Lucie, FL where the Mets are having Spring Training.
He (The Situation) got booed so badly that I couldn't even hear the guy on the loudspeaker!!! Anyway, here he is with Chris Carter of the Mets.
And yes, I shot Spring Training from the photo box for a week and nobody saw me on TV!!!
Greetings from the suburbs of Tampa! This strapping specimen was one of the most picturesque things Tampa had to offer.

For awhile I've been looking at the work of Tim Tadder and a few other "artists/photographers" there images have a sereal feel almost like an HDR. however, taking 3 or more exposures is not really feasible with people and speedlights. So after much playing i think I may be catching on to what they are doing. although no where near the level of the professionals. I feel that this technique shows promise. the only problem is after all the photoshop work the file went from 10mb raw to a 670mb TIFF. That really slows my comp down!
I think the trick to this look is starting with the highest quality source file. Lighting being the most crucial aspect. I lit this photo with a LumaPro LP120 shot from the left of camera, diffused with a 8"x9' soft box. on the right was a Nikon SB-25 diffused with a white umbrella.
Comments and suggestions welcome!
