i'm not exactly sure what's going on here -- i didn't have much mental energy today so is started to draw the same thing i always draw (A Face). but then i was like "NO, YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE THIS FUNKY!" and this happened. i think i succeeded in funk-ifying it. i've been brainstorming different methods of making art, which i'm excited to implement when my brain energy returns to me.
"Pinwheel Galaxy and Crater - Vittorio Marella”, 6” x 4”, 2021, graphite, dirt and wood on Schoellerhammer drawing board mounted on MDF
I thought that this drawing was finished (see below), but when I was attempting to drill a key hole slot in the back of the piece (ie. Lesson # 37b - always drill a key hole slot prior to making the art) the drill press took creative matters in it’s own hands and—as predictably as the titlular meteorific crater references—plunged a hole clear through the panel! You can imagine my (%£€#¥<@&$:/!!!!) response. Ultimately it seemed fitting to welcome that physical (in contrast to rendered) “anomaly“ as part of the work: I filled the hole with a piece of wooden dowel, but made no effort to mask the addition.
At one point the subject of this work, the Venetian painter Vittorio Marella, was studying astrophysics, but eventually turned to a wholehearted focus on painting. That said this little work—part of my on-going project of portraiture as a kind of meditation on vocation / “voice”—suggests a metaphoric fittingness of that astronomical fascination.
The drawing’s composition nods to early (Medieval / Renaissance) images of astronomers.
