Jackson Piano Building

Preservation

Expansion of the Coronado Theatre:

A historic Rockford landmark, the Jackson building’s exterior could not be altered. Therefore,

Cullen’s (Architect) first challenge was

to find a way to keep the

building’s two street-facing

walls as well as a portion of

the second floor and roof

intact and structurally sound

while removing other walls

and floors, opening the

building so the two structures

could be joined.

My first try at growing these beautiful Crocosmia flowers from corms given to me by a neighbourhood Community Gardener.

The abundant eye-catching, brillliantly red, tubular [hummimgbird attracting] flowers appear in midsummer atop bold, slightly arching, sparsely branched 3-foot-tall stems. Crocosmia's mid-green leaves are pleated and swordlike. www.finegardening.com/plant/crocosmia-lucifer

Noteworthy Characteristics

Crocosmia is a genus of about 7 species of cormous plants from grasslands in South Africa. [...].

Genus name comes from the Greek words krokos meaning saffron and osme meaning a smell for the smell of dried flowers steeped in warm water.

'Lucifer' is an Alan Bloom hybrid (Crocosmia x Curtonus) which has flowers and foliage that are similar to gladiolus. A clump-forming plant that features tubular, nodding, scarlet red, one-sided flowers borne along the upper portions of stiffly arching, sometimes branched, flower scapes (stems) typically rising up to 3' (infrequently to 4') tall and slightly above the narrow, sword-shaped, basal leaves. www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDe...

This is a portion of a toy tree which I love very much. I would like to think it was made for a doll house. It has real lights and I put "tinsel" on it to make it look more luxurious. The tinsel is really a Christmassy ribbon which I kept from a present long ago. The tree measures about 5 inches (I am working on a picture showing the whole tree) and the portion shown here is pretty much exactly 3 inches high. I placed it in front of a metallic green, shiny gift bag and I realized this gave lovely tiny bokeh. I usually re-gift such bags but I am keeping this one!!!

HMM !

Despite the Flickr tagmaster proclaiming this to be a field and/or a grassland, it is neither but merely a portion of my yard after a bit of a blow, displaying a gathering of the bumper crop of pine cones this year.

I liked the way the foliage framed this upper portion of Rainier's Narada Falls. This is perhaps half of the fall's 168 foot (51 m) tumble. Taken in mid-September when flow was lower. Really roars come spring.

This is the largest waterfall on the Paradise river. A great example of a horsetail waterfall.

"The name Narada was proposed by Arthur F. Knight and adopted in 1893 for the Narada branch of the Theosophical Society of Tacoma. Narada is a Hindu word meaning 'uncontaminated' or 'pure'. Early variants on the spelling include Neradah, and the common mistake of Nevada Falls.

Curiously an 1897 map produced by Henry Sarvant and G.F. Evans marks a "Big Paradise Falls" along the Paradise River which is assumed to represent Narada Falls." worldwaterfalldatabase.com

A banana is an elongated, edible fruit – botanically a berry – produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. In some countries, bananas used for cooking may be called plantains, distinguishing them from dessert bananas. The fruit is variable in size, color, and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft flesh rich in starch covered with a rind, which may be green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe. The fruits grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant. Almost all modern edible seedless (parthenocarp) bananas come from two wild species – Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. The banana plant is the largest herbaceous flowering plant. All the above-ground parts of a banana plant grow from a structure usually called a corm. Plants are normally tall and fairly sturdy, and are often mistaken for trees, but what appears to be a trunk is actually a "false stem" or pseudostem. Bananas grow in a wide variety of soils, as long as the soil is at least 60 cm deep, has good drainage and is not compacted. The leaves of banana plants are composed of a stalk (petiole) and a blade (lamina). The banana fruits develop from the banana heart, in a large hanging cluster, made up of tiers (called hands), with up to 20 fruit to a tier. The hanging cluster is known as a bunch, comprising 3–20 tiers, or commercially as a banana stem, and can weigh 30–50 kilograms. Individual banana fruits (commonly known as a banana or finger) average 125 grams, of which approximately 75% is water and 25% dry matter. The fruit has been described as a leathery berry. There is a protective outer layer (a peel or skin) with numerous long, thin strings (the phloem bundles), which run lengthwise between the skin and the edible inner portion. The inner part of the common yellow dessert variety can be split lengthwise into three sections that correspond to the inner portions of the three carpels by manually deforming the unopened fruit. In cultivated varieties, the seeds are diminished nearly to non-existence; their remnants are tiny black specks in the interior of the fruit. 32533

Looking up a portion of the Trail of the Molten Land at Lava Butte.

Lava Butte is a cinder cone rising 500 feet. A cinder covered trail encircles the rim of the cone with outstanding views.

"The early history of Lava Butte is not known, but it is assumed that Native Americans observed the eruptions and later ascended the prominent new landmark. White settlers arriving in the 1800s also noted the landmark. In 1903, I.C. Russell was the first geologist to study the butte and speculated that it erupted as recently as 150 years ago.

However, like the other cinder cones in the area, Lava Butte only experienced a single eruption, dated by geologists in 1977 to about 7,000 years ago."

A 31 mile portion of the old Hwy 101 in Northern California is home to the giant Redwood trees. We hiked a few trails near the official Redwood National and State Parks much further North but this stretch of road was equally impressive. 51,222 acres of redwood groves in this area of the country. We stopped at a few places along the road to get better immersed in the groves. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by the Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world.

A portion of Fisher Towers frames the Colorado River along with the Wingate cliffs below Dome Plateau on the west rim (left side) of the canyon. In the distance (to the north) snow falls on the Book Cliffs as a winter storm makes its way into the area. The formation with the cupola-like tops is Ancient Arts, with the middle portion of Cottontail Tower on the far right showing nicely the striated texture of its sides. A hiking trail is visible across the bottom.

Fisher Towers is made up of the strikingly colorful hematite-rich (iron oxide) Cutler Formation, 290 million year old deposits from the uplift of the Uncompahgre highlands. The towers are popular with rock climbers in part due to the conglomerates containing billion year old cobbles of precambrian rock embedded in the sandstone that provide foot- and hand-holds.

I had a wonderful trip to this area and the White Rim in Canyonlands last week- though it was a bit eventful and shortened- more on that later.

The portion of the Grandview Trail up near the rim of the Grand Canyon had quite a bit of snow and ice on the trail. Luckily the farther down into the canyon we got, the less snow. The Grandview Trail was originally constructed by miners to connect copper mines with the rim. It is steep with drop offs on one side. But the views of the canyon were amazing!

The U.P. is home to all but one of Michigan’s waterfalls. There are more than 300 falls scattered across the U.P., ranging in size from under 5 feet to 48+ feet vertical drops. Almost all require hiking to reach, but there are paths (several barrier-free) to some of the most popular. The best time to see them is in spring when even the smallest falls roar to life

Conrails "Dirt Train" is now loaded with the dirty gold and is heading for Croxton. I'm standing on the NJ RT7 overpass just east of Kearny, NJ as the sun begins to set. This portion of the the DL&W's Boonton Line is now history. Rails removed and grass growing in it's place, a sight like this can never be repeated.

This is a portion of the Wachusett Reservoir Dam in Clinton, MA. If you look towards the bottom right of the building, you can see a man walking his dog...just to give you a size perspective on this dam. This is also the place that has walking trails around it, and you can climb up/down the 2 sets of stairs on each side of the dam...each set with approximately 194 steps.

It's amazing to to me that this wall is holding back 65 billion gallons of water. Work on this Dam was completed in 1905 and the reservoir was first filled in May of 1908.

RIP, Don White, 11/26/21.

My uncle Don passed away this morning. He was the original record collector in our family, starting back in the 78 rpm era. He had the largest collection of music of anyone that I have personally known. This was just a small portion of his collection that he was able to take with him when he had to move into a retirement home. Keep that vinyl spinning...

A perfect day of 80F/26C and not a cloud in the sky had me out in the canoe for an extended period yesterday, a portion of which had me gazing at eagles who apparently considered it lovely as well. While I can't say I'm a big fan of the feeding habits of these raptors, opportunistic feeders and scavengers who are known to prey on the eggs and young of other species (including my loons), I admit to feeling a distinct sense of awe in just looking at the size of them. They certainly create a presence.

While I often see individuals perched in spots around the lake, it is rare to see them playing as they seemed to be yesterday, alternately swooping and soaring in an acrobatic aerial display. Far above the adults, a youngster viewed the scene from altitude. The first comment photo catches a bit of this, and suggests their size in relation to fully grown shoreline trees. The second comment photo shows an individual just taking its leave upon my approach... probably as close as I've gotten. The lead photo is a more stylized (artsy) image of the departure, chosen as the feature specifically for the composition All obviously have a texture applied to give some interest to the "bluebird" sky.

The display of the eagles (and now the osprey) is one of the few times that I truly wish I had a better camera...but that would mean I would have to learn how to use it...;-) However, with all the mediocre to bad eagle shots I have in my archives, it would be nice to have a series of good ones...for their sake as well as mine.

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus.

The Nebula was discovered on 1784 by William Herschel.

Given a distance of 2400 Light Years, this gives the radius of the entire nebula as 64 Light Years.

Undulations in the surface of the shell lead to multiple filamentary images, which appear to be intertwined.

A middle-aged bicyclist in early morning moves slowly as he climbs an uphill portion of a bypass road which is partly covered in fog.

Built mainly to lessen traffic in the town proper, the two-lane concrete diversion road passes through three villages, located from northwest to southeast.

Heavy cargo trucks usually use the road to save time, fuel and efforts. Some cyclists conduct their training session there because its partly hilly and zigzagging portions pose some great challenges to them.

Captured in Subic, Zambales, Philippines.

The tip of a very tiny piece of driftwood I found on a beach in Oman. The front portion here is 1.5 in at it's widest point. Beautifully smoothed and bleached by the action of the tides and sun.

Here is how it was taken: Placed on aluminium foil, lit with natural window light and taken with a 25mm prime lens on a 4/3 mirrorless camera. Hand held.

Delaware-Lackawanna local SC-7 crosses 8th Avenue with empty sand hoppers from the large Linde facility that occupies a small portion of the former Delaware & Hudson yard between Carbondale and Simpson, Pennsylvania. They'll shove back north with loads to spot, which were left behind on the run-around, once they secure the empties. Today's power set is DL&W RS11 1804, D-L C420 414 and D-L C425 2457, seen in the nice late morning sun beneath the historic 1892 Carbondale City Hall Clocktower. Thanks Biff!

Each colour and every portion in this image represents something special to remind us what Christmas is truly about.

Whether you are for it or against it, the fact remains the Truth of Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ.

Red is for the blood that He shed on a hillside at Golgotha.

Gold is for the precious gift that He gave...

The treetops reaching skyward represent new Life that is found in Him.

Purple for the royal priesthood He has bestowed for those that choose to follow.

...and the Angel in the midst because His birth was proclaimed by angels to the shepherds.

(Luke 2:8-20.)

The message of Christmas is one of Faith, Hope & Love

Love is the Greatest .... 1 Corinthians 13:1

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal"

We do many things in this life out of self interest, we may also be able to speak more eloquently than another and be more successful than another (in our own eyes & in the worlds eyes).

Man can do many marvelous things... but if we have not LOVE it all amounts to NOTHING.

I hope that All will find LOVE in their hearts this Christmas ...but not only at Christmas...

... and I wish YOU all a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

A small portion of an old deed of property. Everything is printed except for the final digit of the year and the signature of the witness at the bottom. Filled out about 20 years after the beginning of the Revolution and likely from somewhere in the state of Pennsylvania. I found it interesting that even then they had a form printed that had spaces to be filled in with signatures and the year. Unfortunately the top portion of the deed, which is where the location of the property would have been specified, is missing. HMM everyone!

This is a portion of the Matanuska River flood-plane in the Mat-Su Valley. It looks very impressive stretched out before Pioneer Peak - centered in the distance. You can see levels in the flood plane, for instance, all of the logs are one one level. There is a lower level still filled with ice and snow, and in the distance and to the right is the current river flowing along. As the water level rises and shrinks it continues to change the flood plane constantly over time. In fact, there are many channels this river carves into the floodplane that are active conduits of water - earning it the name braided river.

This photo is stitched together from three images.

Pioneer Peak was named for the group of farmers who came to this area during the great depression to start fresh with government assistance. It's an interesting historical story that is told at the Palmer Visitor Center.
