The Ponte Pietra was destroyed during the World War II but later faithfully rebuilt using original materials recovered from the riverbed. What foresight this careful reconstruction was - and how fortunate that today we are able to walk across these bridges and appreciate their nearly original form.

The arched Ponte Pietra (pietra means stone in Italian) is the oldest bridge in Verona, built during the years of Roman rule. It has been damaged and rebuilt more than once due to floods and war. Two of its arches (the white stone arches in the photo) are of original Roman material. The brick arches date from a reconstruction during the 1500s.

Today the Ponte Pietra links the old part of Verona, between the Duomo and the church of Sant'Anastasia on the city side with the Roman Theater, Castel San Pietro, and the churches of Santo Stefano and San Georgio on the far bank. The bridge, with its gentle rise and fall, is beautiful and provides views of towers, church domes, and ruins, as well as long views of Verona along the banks of the river.

Night shot of the Roman bridge Sant'Angelo (Roman as in: in Rome and built under the Roman era). The bridge has five spans, and the middle three are Roman originals. It was built under emperor Hadrian, completed in 134 A.D., and was then called Pons Aelius (pons is Latin for bridge, and Aelius was Hadrians nomen, the Roman version of a surname).

The angels are Baroque embellishments, designed by Bernini in 1688 and executed by his pupils. The name of the bridge is not due to the statues, but because the bridge leads up to Castel Sant'Angelo, which had had a statue of the archangel Saint Michael on its roof since 1536 (first in marble, and it was later replaced by a bronze version still standing there).

By the way, that original angel can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/dameboudicca/3277130449

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is an open-air museum. Here, I will post some photos of the city taken during the New Year festive season. There was no snow, but that didn't stop the city from dressing up in festive clothes.

The Ponte Mantible is actually an aqueduct commissioned by Archbishop Gelmírez in the early 12th century. It is located on the Corgo River, in the park of the same name, near San Caetano.

At the end of the 11th century, Compostela was overwhelmed by the number of pilgrims and merchants who came to the city. The water supply was most urgent, as the few springs left were scarce for so many people. So much so that perhaps the monks of San Martiño Pinario could not even wash their hands.

For this reason, Archbishop Diego de Gelmírez, advised by Master Bernardo, ordered the construction of an aqueduct at the top of Mount Vite. From there would emerge the first major canal system for the entire city, which is still in operation.
