A difference engine is an automatic mechanical calculator designed to tabulate polynomial functions. The name derives from the method of divided differences, a way to interpolate or tabulate functions by using a small set of polynomial coefficients. Most mathematical functions commonly used by engineers, scientists and navigators, including logarithmic and trigonometric functions, can be approximated by polynomials, so a difference engine can compute many useful tables of numbers.

When we say ‘ay', ‘a' represents a constant unless mentioned otherwise and ‘y' represents a variable. The value of a constant does not change but the value of a variable can change in a problem. Each term in an algebraic expression is separated by a + or - sign. A monomial is an algebraic expression with a single algebraic term.

I got the x function in pink, x = 6.5t² + 4t + x˳ . We do not know what x˳ is unless we are told.

 

A good thing to do when you're new to integrals is to immediately take the derivative, which I did in teal-blue colored marker. Note it gets me right back to where I started, the original v=13t+4. That's proof I did it right, and it also shows that the constant x˳ is not part of the velocity function.
