History: Purchased by Fabien Kuntz in June 2016 from a dealer in Tan Tan, Morocco.
Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Breccia composed of basaltic eucrite clasts in a sparse, dark matrix containing minor barite. The mostly rounded clasts consist of exsolved pigeonite (pale orange-brown in thin section) and polycrystalline calcic plagioclase with accessory silica polymorph, fayalitic olivine, Ti-chromite, ilmenite (containing rare inclusions of baddeleyite) and minor Fe-Mg-bearing merrillite.
Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene host (Fs59.2Wo3.9, FeO/MnO = 31), clinopyroxene exsolution lamella (Fs27.4Wo42.9, FeO/MnO = 29), clinopyroxene host (Fs29.1Wo42.1, FeO/MnO = 30), orthopyroxene exsolution lamella (Fs62.9Wo2.3, FeO/MnO = 30), fayalitic olivine (Fa83.9-86.0, FeO/MnO = 26-32), plagioclase (An85.0-90.0Or1.0-0.3, N = 2). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 2.96.
Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia, shocked).
Specimens: 24.54 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder with Kuntz.

A mineral is a naturally-occurring, solid, inorganic, crystalline substance having a fairly definite chemical composition and having fairly definite physical properties. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are over 6000 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry. Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.
The sulfide minerals contain one or more sulfide anions (S-2). The sulfides are usually considered together with the arsenide minerals, the sulfarsenide minerals, and the telluride minerals. Many sulfides are economically significant, as they occur commonly in ores. The metals that combine with S-2 are mainly Fe, Cu, Ni, Ag, etc. Most sulfides have a metallic luster, are moderately soft, and are noticeably heavy for their size. These minerals will not form in the presence of free oxygen. Under an oxygen-rich atmosphere, sulfide minerals tend to chemically weather to various oxide and hydroxide minerals.
Marcasite is an iron sulfide mineral, FeS2, which is the same chemical formula as pyrite. Different minerals having the same chemical formula are called polymorphs. Other examples of polymorphs are graphite-diamond (both C) and calcite-aragonite (both CaCO3). Pyrite and marcasite both have a metallic luster, a brassy gold color, and a dark gray to black streak. They both lack cleavage, and they have the same hardness (H = 6 to 6.5). Marcasite tends to have a paler brass color than pyrite. Some marcasites are almost silvery-colored.
How does one visually distinguish marcasite from pyrite? Apart from color, marcasite crystals are typically plates, or sharp & pointed, and marcasite tends to twin, resulting in cockscomb masses (www.mindat.org/photo-408969.html). Marcasite also more readily breaks down into whitish powder (FeSO4).
Pyrite can convert to marcasite naturally, and vice versa. Pyrite concretions may have preserved needle-shaped crystals of marcasite, but the marcasite is gone. X-ray analysis may be needed to determine which polymorph is present.
Stratigraphy: possibly / probably derived from the Ohio Shale (Upper Devonian)
Locality: central Ohio, USA

quadrapop Lane in Exhibition Hall
August 30th - September 20th
Exhibition Hall SLurl: slurl.com/secondlife/Tabula rasa/152/117/27
About the Artist:
"quadrapop Lane has been in SL for over a year now - building, running a gallery and now a sim dedicated to the content creators of SL.
The avatars worn by quadrapop are varied and as the profile says.... "I am a polymorph so don't expect me to look like this pic in my profile... I could be male, female, animal or mineral... and sometimes I'm just a cloud of particles...." So if you dont recognise the AV with quadrapop Lane above it that is probably why.
Hir SL artworks have a distinctive style... rainbows feature as do circles and spheres in many forms... there is no social commentary... this is pure exploration of the possibilities of the SL prim building system for abstract ends. Some have described hir texture use as inspired... and it is true that the textures on the sculptures are integral to the work's success.
When you enter a space created, or decorated, by quadrapop you are well aware that you are no longer in Kansas (nor anywhere else on Earth) - this is purely SL.
The objects will morph without changing shape. The lighting will change their mood and sometimes their meaning, so play with your environment settings. Glow, alphas and flexi prims are all essential apsects of most of these works."

Attempts 1 & 2 at Polymorph dogs...note how much of an improvement the second is. He actually has four legs and can stand. xD I kind of let the stuff do what it wanted, and it wanted to become a semi-prick-eared terrier. That stuff was fun to work with, and reminded me of my 7th-grade art "Native American" bag of mini clay sculptures. To my credit, I did not make a mother with her nose on her knee...but next I may make a bust of myself. If I haven't already.

Agatized coral from the Tertiary of Georgia, USA.
Parts of Georgia and Florida are known for having geodized, agatized corals. The original coral skeletons were composed of aragonite (CaCO3, calcium carbonate), a polymorph of calcite. The fossil corals have since been silicified and geodized, resulting in chalcedony-lined cavities / vugs.
Stratigraphy: supposedly from marine sedimentary rocks in the Hawthorn Group, Tertiary
Locality: undisclosed / unrecorded site attributed to the Withlacoochee River, near the Georgia-Florida border, far-southern Georgia, USA

Western Sahara
Find: 2013
TKW: 20 kg / OBJ: 3,8 g
Found buried in the ground near Chouichiyat on March 3, 2013, and excavated by a team of local people.
Physical characteristics: A single large mass (at least 20 kg) composed of yellow-green crystalline material with pale orange weathering products along numerous fractures. Much of the material disintegrated into fragments upon excavation.
Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) The specimen is composed almost entirely of translucent, yellow-green orthopyroxene with very sparse, tiny included grains of Ni-free metal, troilite, chromite, anorthite, silica polymorph and clinopyroxene. Secondary pale orange, clay-like deposits from terrestrial weathering are present along thin fractures.
Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene (Fs28.1-28.3Wo3.0-3.3; FeO/MnO = 29-31), clinopyroxene (Fs10.9Wo43.1, FeO/MnO = 26). Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): analyses of acid-washed orthopyroxene by laser fluorination gave, respectively, δ17O = 1.677, 1.793, 1.810; δ18O = 3.680, 3.879, 3.875; Δ17O = -0.266, -0.255, -0.236 per mil.
