"This is a cosmopolitan genus, occurring in alpine habitats of temperate regions of Asia, Europe and the Americas. Some species also occur in northwest Africa, eastern Australia and New Zealand. They consist of annual, biennial and perennial plants. Some are evergreen, others are not.

"The name is a tribute to Gentius, an Illyrian king who was thought to have found out that the herbs had tonic properties." (Wikipedia)

"Gentians have opposite leaves that are sometimes arranged in a basal rosette, and trumpet-shaped flowers that are usually deep blue or azure, but may vary from white, creamy and yellow to red. Many species also show considerable polymorphism with respect to flower color. Typically, blue-flowered species predominate in the Northern Hemisphere, with red-flowered species dominant in the Andes (where bird pollination is probably more heavily favored by natural selection). White-flowered species are scattered throughout the range of the genus but dominate in New Zealand. All gentian species have terminal tubular flowers and most are pentamerous, i.e. with 5 corolla lobes (petals), and 5 sepals, but 4-7 in some species. The style is rather short or absent. The corolla shows folds (= plicae) between the lobes. The ovary is mostly sessile and has nectary glands." (Wikipedia)

1. Genomic Southern blot comparing cultivars M202 and IR36. Genomic DNA was digested with restriction enzymes in single or double digests as indicated above their respective lanes. R = Eco RI, B = Bam HI. H = Hin d III, K = Kpn I. Digested DNAs were electrophoresed on agarose gels pairwise such that restriction fragment length polymorphism could be identified between the two

varieties. The blot was then probed at low stringency (T m -30) with the rice aamylase cDNA, pOS103 (O’Neill et al 1990).

A wonderful material! See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycaprolactone for more details. This softens at 62 degrees C, and so you can just drop the beads into hot water and when they go clear, then just take them out, squeeze out the water and shape by hand. They don't burn, but get a grown up to help if you have very thin skin. This stuff is sold as 'Polymorph' and Maplins will charge you £18 for 500g, or online you can pay just over half that. These are lit from below by a strong flash. The initial reason is that the background was full of people bending over and talking to children, children, and various forms of chaos, so I though, why not make it all turn black? Once I tried it however, I liked the look, and went off to find more things to photgraph this way.

apparently I've placed the 'bones' to close together but this is my first time so I'm bound to make mistakes.

I thought this rhyparachromid bug was a black beetle when I first saw it climbing this concrete wall. It was pure shiny black and wings were of coleopteroid form. That is the wings met down the middle without overlapping. The corium (thickened portion) being enlarged with the membranous ends reduced to small flaps (barely visible - see note on pic). Thus also exsposing some of the rear abdominal segments.

Apparantly coleoptery occurs numerously across Lygaeoidea in Australia but noticeably so in rhyparachromids. Slater (1975) observed a greater occurance of this form in these bugs found in exposed hot xeric habitat and thus suggests it is an insulation adaptation.

Size for size, their bodies are amazingly powerful, able to carry pieces of leaf that weigh at least 20 times their own body weight - that's the same as a human carrying a one ton load. Like bees, their colonies contain different sorts of workers. Soldier leaf-cutters have huge jaws, strong enough to cut through leather and gardener leaf-cutters work beneath ground and process the pieces of the leaf that the harvesters bring back. The nest also contains a queen and she lays all the eggs needed to keep the colony supplied with new workers. Leaf-cutting ants cannot eat leaves. Instead, they carry the cut pieces back to the nest and use it as compost to cultivate the fungus. The fungus cannot survive outside the nest or reproduce without the ants help. Amazingly, if the ants collect plant material that is toxic to the fungus, the fungus seems to release a chemical signal which stops the ants collecting that particularly plant material. There can be three to eight million ants in a single colony, which can measure 15 m across and 5 m deep. The ants forage for leaves some distance from their nest. They find their way home by producing and laying down pheromone (scent) trails as they move away from the nest. These pheromones are so powerful that each ant produces only one billionth of a gram. One gram of this pheromone would easily be enough to make an ant trail all around the world. Leaf-cutting ants harvest more greenery in South American forests than any other animal. In fact, within the rain forest, leaf-cutter ants consume almost 20% of the annual vegetation growth! In its lifetime, a colony of these ants may move over 20 tons of soil.

Teapotty! is an interactive electronic teapot I've constructed for the Chi-TEK tech tea party event at the V&A in Sept 11. Before and after the tea party, it will sit quietly on display in a cabinet for 3 months. www.mztek.org/programs/chi-tek/

Teapotty! is a teapot sitting on a servo which takes readings from a magnetometer which is influenced by neodymium magnets in a cup. The magnetometer takes the reading from the north position, plays a bit of something similar to the Tetley Tea tune and then moves to a new position - where the teacup moves to. BlinkM RGB LEDs indicate the new position of the teapot by changing colour based on the teapot's new position from 0-180 degrees. I made some polymorph diffuser covers for them & also added heart confetti to emphasise the feeling of heartwarming happiness a cup of tea can bring :-)

Muonionalusta

The Muonionalusta is a meteorite classified as fine octahedrite, type IVA (Of) which impacted in northern Scandinavia, west of the border between Sweden and Finland, about one million years BCE. The first fragment of the Muonionalusta was found in 1906 near the village of Kitkiöjärvi. Around forty pieces are known today, some being quite large. Other fragments have been found in a 25-by-15-kilometre (15.5 mi × 9.3 mi) area in the Pajala district of Norrbotten County, approximately 140 kilometres (87 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. The meteorite was first described in 1910 by Professor A. G. Högbom, who named it "Muonionalusta", after a nearby place on the Muonio River. It was studied in 1948 by Professor Nils Göran David Malmqvist. The Muonionalusta, probably the oldest known meteorite (4.5653 billion years), marks the first occurrence of stishovite in an iron meteorite.

Description

Studies have shown it to be the oldest discovered meteorite impacting the Earth during the Quaternary Period, about one million years ago. It is quite clearly part of the iron core or mantle of a planetoid, which shattered into many pieces upon its fall on our planet. Since landing on Earth the meteorite has experienced four ice ages. It was unearthed from a glacial moraine in the northern tundra. It has a strongly weathered surface covered with cemented faceted pebbles.

Composition

ew analysis of this strongly shock-metamorphosed iron meteorite has shown a content of 8.4% nickel and trace amounts of rare elements—0.33 ppm gallium, 0.133 ppm germanium and 1.6 ppm iridium. It also contains the minerals chromite, daubréelite, schreibersite, akaganéite and inclusions of troilite. For the first time, analysis has proved the presence of a form of quartz altered by extremely high pressure—stishovite, probably a pseudomorphosis after tridymite. From the article "First discovery of stishovite in an iron meteorite": Stishovite, a high pressure polymorph of SiO2, is an exceptionally rare mineral...and has only been found in association with a few meteorite impact structures.... Clearly, the meteoritic stishovite cannot have formed by isostatic pressure prevailing in the core of the parent asteroid.... One can safely assume then that stishovite formation (in the Muonionalusta meteorite) is connected with an impact event. The glass component might have formed directly as a shock melt....

A 2010 study reported the lead isotope dating in the Muonionalusta meteorite and concluded the stishovite was from an impact event hundreds of millions of years ago: "The presence of stishovite signifies that this meteorite was heavily shocked, possibly during the 0.4 Ga [billion years] old breakup event indicated by cosmic ray exposure...."

Jaborosa integrifolia exhibits stigma-height polymorphism. There are individuals with flowers where anthers and stigma are at the same height but the rule is variable herkogamy, the most common type (75%) being that with an exerted stigma. Self- and cross-tubes did not differ in their capability to reach the ovary. There is not autogamy but mostly self-incompatibility. Fruits from controlled cross-pollination showed the highest seed set and seed viability. The nectar sugar is characterized by a similar amount of glucose and fructose, and by the absence of sucrose. Although nectar secretion was continuous throughout the life of the flower, most nectar was secreted during the first 24 h after flower opening.

La Jaborosa integrifolia è una pianta rizomatosa di origine argentina.Cresce eretta e sviluppa un corto fusto che porta una piccola chioma, in genere tondeggiante. Jaborosa integrifolia è un arbusto sempreverde
